DAY 1 Wednesday 24th March, 2021 MELBOURNE TO MOUNT GAMBIER This morning we’re chauffeur driven from home to meet our O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours coach and crew. With the anticipation of adventures ahead, we travel via the Westgate Bridge to Geelong for our morning tea break from the coach. We continue on to the beautiful seaside city of Warrnambool, on the shores of Lady Bay. This region is known as The Shipwreck Coast, for more than 100 ships and boats have been wrecked within 80 kilometres of here. Following a late lunch, we continue our journey west to Heywood, Dartmoor and across the border to Mount Gambier, South Australia’s biggest regional city. Their water supply comes from the famous Blue Lake - the largest of the many crater lakes in the area. Between November and April, the steely grey waters of the lake change to a brilliant blue, almost overnight. We’ll see the lake on a brief sightseeing tour of the city, along with Umpherston Cave - a sinkhole that has been landscaped with terraced gardens close to the city centre. It’s an impressive garden with palm trees reaching to the sky and plants hanging over the edges of the sinkhole. OVERNIGHT: The Barn Accommodation, MOUNT GAMBIER DAY 2 Thursday 25th March, 2021 SPIRIT OF THE COORONG CRUISE Following breakfast we travel along the Coorong, glimpsing the Younghusband Peninsula enroute. At Meningie we board the “Spirit of the Coorong” for a delightful and relaxing luncheon cruise across the spectacular Coorong National Park. Catching up with our coach in Goolwa, we drive through Port Elliot to lovely Victor Harbor and the McCracken Country Club for our overnight stay. We’ll be back in Victor Harbor later in our tour for the opportunity to look around. OVERNIGHT: McCracken Country Club, VICTOR HARBOR
DAY 3 Friday 26th March, 2021 KANGAROO ISLAND ENTERPRISES This morning, we take the scenic drive to Cape Jervis to board the SeaLink ferry for the 50 minute cruise across the Backstairs Passage to Penneshaw on the eastern end of Kangaroo Island. Back on dry land we start exploring the Dudley Peninsula. Our first stop is at Dudley Wines where we are spoilt with a wonderful outlook as we are lead in a tasting of their fabulous wines and enjoy a light lunch. Venturing on, we will be introduced to some unique Kangaroo Island ventures - the first one is Clifford’s Honey Farm for a honey ice cream and to learn about the unique Ligurian Bee. Very close by is Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery, the only remaining commercial eucalyptus distillery in South Australia. Here we learn about the past and present process of eucalyptus oil distilling. We now head to Kingscote, the island’s main town, home for the next three nights. OVERNIGHT: Aurora Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE DAY 4 Saturday 27th March, 2021 KANGAROO ISLAND WILDLIFE We start the day travelling to Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island's premier tourist attraction. Here we’ll learn about the amazing lives of these endangered animals as our experienced guide takes us on a tour into the colony. Next stop is Raptor Domain for their In-Flight Birds of Prey demonstration, offering a unique and entertaining experience while creating an understanding and appreciation for the bird’s role in the environment. We’ll also have lunch here before returning to Kingscote for some free time to take a look at the shops. OVERNIGHT: Aurora Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE DAY 5 Sunday 28th March, 2021 KANGAROO ISLAND SCENERY After breakfast we can look forward to another interesting day on tour with our first stop being Emu Bay Lavender for morning tea and a tour. Making our way towards the centre of the island now, we arrive at the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park. Owners Sam and Dana have a long wildlife background and take pride in the opportunity to support conservation through the park. There are approximately 600 animals in the park covering 150 species. It is not often that the park is without young animals that have been injured, rejected or orphaned so there may be babies to cuddle or feed also. We have time to wander around the area and also eat our picnic lunches. There is also a café on site for anything else we may feel like. We end the day by seeing the iconic Remarkable Rocks, Cape du Couedic and Admirals Arch in Flinders Chase National Park. Today we find out how wide the island is and our afternoon is spent enjoying the scenery on the way back to our hotel. OVERNIGHT: Aurora Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE
DAY 6 Monday 29th March, 2021 VICTOR HARBOR This morning we say farewell to Kangaroo Island, board the ferry at Penneshaw to head back to the mainland and retrace our steps to Victor Harbor. Nestled on a wide, sandy arc of Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor has been the summer holiday choice for generations of South Australians. After lunch, we take the Clydesdale horse-drawn tram across the causeway to Granite Island. We now have some free time to explore “Victor”, as the locals know it. Victor Harbor was originally a whaling centre with three whaling stations in the mid-1900s. An estimated 400 southern right whales arrived into Encounter Bay each season. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the SA Whale Centre. (own expense) OVERNIGHT: McCracken Country Club, VICTOR HARBOR DAY 7 Tuesday 30th March, 2021 VICTOR HARBOR TO STAWELL We travel to the “Heritage Town” of Strathalbyn this morning, settled more than 175 years ago by Scottish immigrants. Today the quaint town is popular for its boutique shops and beautiful heritage buildings in the historic main streets. At Tailem Bend we join the Dukes Highway through Coonalpyn - with a brief stop to view the silo artwork - to Keith for lunch. This afternoon, we make our way through Horsham to Stawell for our final night on tour. OVERNIGHT: Magdala Motor Lodge, STAWELL DAY 8 Wednesday 31st March, 2021 STAWELL TO MELBOURNE Our last day together begins with a scenic drive through the spectacular Grampians National Park, before arriving in Ararat for lunch. This afternoon, we re-join the highway and travel via Ballarat home to Melbourne. What a great time away it’s been!
