Welcome from our RACE DIRECTOR On behalf of the dedicated team at Elite Energy, welcome to the 14th year of the Shimano Husky Triathlon Festival. One of Australia’s most beloved Long Course events, the Husky Ultimate Triathlon has seen over 18,000 long course athletes cross the finish line since the first race in 2006. This event is more than just a long course triathlon. It’s a true festival, with a packed weekend program that includes Super Sprint, Sprint and the NEW Classic distance triathlons in addition to an Ocean Swim, Aquabike, Fun Runs, MINIMAN kids’ triathlon, and our popular Health & Lifestyle Expo. This year features a NEW bike course for the Classic and Ultimate events, and we look forward to showcasing more of this beautiful area. Huskisson is a spectacular spot to race and holiday with great local cafes and restaurants, coupled with a full range of accommodation from camping, cabins, motels through to beach front homes. We hope you will have time to enjoy this special part of the world. As any triathlete knows, volunteers are the lifeblood of these events. More than 500 people from the surrounding areas have volunteered to support you over race weekend, and they’re committed to getting you to the magic of the finish line. Please take the time to say thank you to this great team - they are inspired by you and understand the sacrifices you make to get to the start line. Please respect them and the community at large by leaving the surrounding areas as clean as you found them. Finally, we hope you enjoy your experience and the challenge of the Shimano Husky Triathlon Festival and wish you the best race possible. See you at the finish line. A Message from the RACE REFEREES All triathlon events this weekend will be conducted under the Triathlon Australia (TA) Race Competition Rules, and this is a ‘NON Drafting Event”. To minimise the possibility of infringing the rules on race day and avoiding a visit to the Penalty Box, please observe the following: SATURDAY ONLY • Keep to the left side of the road at all times. At no time should you cross to the incorrect side of the road, even if attempting a passing manoeuvre. • Always pass on the right of the cyclist in front (never on the left) • Keep 10 metres between yourself and cyclist in front of you unless undertaking or being subject of a passing manoeuvre. The distance is measured from the leading edge of the front wheel of the leading bike to the leading edge of the front wheel of the trialing bike. • If passed it is your responsibility to drop back immediately to 10 metres behind the bike in front of you. You must drop have dropped back the full 10 metres before attempting another passing manoeuvre • Any pass must be completed within 20 seconds SUNDAY ONLY • Keep to the left side of the road at all times. At no time should you cross to the incorrect side of the road, even if attempting a passing manoeuvre. • Always pass on the right of the cyclist in front (never on the left) • Keep 12 metres between yourself and cyclist in front of you unless undertaking or being subject of a passing manoeuvre. The distance is measured from the leading edge of the front wheel of the leading bike to the leading edge of the front wheel of the trialing bike. • If passed it is your responsibility to drop back immediately to 12 metres behind the bike in front of you. You must drop have dropped back the full 12 metres before attempting another passing manoeuvre • Any pass must be completed within 25 seconds
Triathlon is an individual race and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid infringements. A Technical Official’s ruling is final in the case of Drafting, Blocking, and Illegal Pass infringements (Judgment Calls) and these are not subject to either protest or appeal. If you are shown a card by a Technical Official you must report to the Penalty Box at the next available opportunity. Failure to do so may result in disqualification. The following are the most common rule infringements: SATURDAY ONLY • Blue Card 3-minute Penalties include: • Drafting – Following a leading cyclist closer than 10 metres and failing to pass in 20 seconds OR after being passed, failing to drop back 10 metres before re- passing • Illegal Pass – Passing on the left • Littering - Discarding items, e.g. tyres, bidons, gel wrappers etc., on any part of the course except within designated areas near an Aid Station SUNDAY ONLY • Blue Card 5-minute Penalties include: • Drafting – Following a leading cyclist closer than 12 metres and failing to pass in 25 seconds OR after being passed, failing to drop back 12 metres before re- passing • Illegal Pass – Passing on the left • Littering - Discarding items, e.g. tyres, bidons, gel wrappers etc., on any part of the course except within designated areas near an Aid Station A Technical Official will advise you of any time Penalty by calling your number, advising you of the nature of the infringement and showing you a BLUE Card. It will be then your responsibility to serve the time Penalty(s) at the next Penalty Box.
Yellow Card Stop Start Penalties to be served at the next Penalty Box include: • Blocking – Riding on the right side of an athlete without passing or riding on the right hand side of the bike lane when clear of other athletes. Yellow Card Stop Start and Correct Penalties include: • Helmet – Failing to have your chin strap securely fastened when moving with your bike. Please ensure your helmet is fastened before unracking your bike and it must not be unfastened until your bike is racked following the cycle leg of the race. NOTE: that any 3 infringements across the course during the event may result in a Disqualification in the Long Course Event. Any 2 infringements across the course during the event may result in a Disqualification in the Sprint and Shorter Distance Events. Other infringements which may result in Disqualification include: • Offensive and unsportsmanlike behaviour, • Public personal toilet, • Outside assistance (from anyone other than a race official), • The use of electronic equipment including telephones, including the use of earphones or other communication devices. A SPECIAL NOTE ON WETSUITS (if it is wetsuit swim) note the extract from the Australian Race Competition Rules with regard to wetsuits: “2 SWIMMING CONDUCT 2.1 When wetsuits are allowed, all of the components of the wetsuit will fit to the athletes’ body tightly;“ If you have a wetsuit that has neoprene or carbon fibre flaps on the forearm to increase the pull through the water, these suits are not legal. Please note that if it is deemed a non-wetsuit swim calf guards may not be worn but may be used following the swim component of the race. OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE – do NOT accept any assistance from anyone other than race personnel and do not have non-racers ride or run alongside you. Triathlon is an individual event and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid infringements. A Technical Official’s ruling is final in the case of Drafting, Blocking, and Illegal Pass infringements (Judgment Calls) and these are not subject to either protest or appeal. There is no Penalty Box on the Run course so if you receive an infringement on the run leg you will serve an on-course Stop/Start Penalty with the Technical Official.
Conducting personal toilet in an area other than at the oncourse toilet facilities provided may result in a DQ. Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and officials with courtesy and consideration as failure to do so is Unsportsmanlike Conduct and may result in a DQ. We hope you have a great race, lots of fun, and achieve your Triathlon goals. Always remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and officials with courtesy and consideration as they are important in keeping the event safe and fair. BE GREEN – with over 5,000 race numbers being issued at this event, each number has the ability to use 4 safety pins. Please bring your own pins (and re-use), or purchase a race belt to eliminate this wastage. Competitor Registration will take place at the Race Office on the grass area, within the Expo behind the Husky Pub, between 2:30pm and 5.30pm on Saturday 23rd. The SHIMANO Team will be located near the Transition area, and also on the course on race day. Mobile bike support, supplied by the Shimano Team, will operate on the bike course. Each mobile Technical Support vehicle will carry a small range of parts to help with minor repairs. All competitors must start with at least one spare tube. Wheels will be in limited supply. Every lap, every lunge, every repetition counts towards the real thing. No match-winning kick, or pass, or sprint, comes without thousands of practice ones. If you want to be that guy on game day, you have to be that guy in the park, at training, making every session count. It all adds up.
BIKE CHECK-IN / RACKING You will be required to rack your bike on SUNDAY MORNING. Bike racks will be numbered accord to waves. With the competitor numbers for 2019, we have split the Sunday transition area into the following categories: Transition on the Road and Grass – Ultimate and Aquabike • Opens @ 4:30am / Closes @ 6:00am / Briefing 6:10 am in Transition Transition on the Grass – Classic • Opens @ 7:00 am / Closes @ 8:30 am / Briefing 8:40am in Transition (you can have a sleep in) Please note that the bike check-in is a safety precaution to monitor basic soundness of your bike, and is essentially a visual check on obvious defects. It is not a certification of roadworthiness by race officials that your bike meets any specific minimum criteria or a guarantee it will not break down during the race. It is your sole responsibility to ensure the mechanical and safe operation of your bike prior to and during the race. Timing All Athletes will be timed with a Chip Timing System provided by Multisport Australia, and involves the use of an electronic chip attached to an ankle band. Your responsibilities as a competitor include: When you register on Saturday 23rd February, you will be issued with a Timing Chip. You must wear the Chip at all times while racing. The timing band with the chip must be attached to your left ankle before you register on Sunday morning for the swim. You must leave it on until you finish the entire race. It is a means of recording your finish times across the special timing mats located at the end of each leg of the race and other check points (turnarounds etc.). At the completion of the race you will be required to remove the timing band and hand it to Officials prior to leaving the secured finish compound area. If you fail to register for the swim on race morning (Sunday), you are still responsible for returning the chip to race headquarters at the finish area. As you have acknowledged on your entry contract, the timing chip and band is on loan and you are committed to returning the band intact with the chip to the Elite Energy Pty Ltd or pay AU$150 .
Do not lose or forget your chip on race day. Limited replacement chips will be available at registration, but there is no guarantee that one will be supplied to you. You will remain responsible for the return of the original chip and any replacement chip or the cost of them. It is imperative that you return the timing band to the Race Office should you withdraw from the race at any time. It is essential for us to know where you are on the course at all times for your safety and our ability to post accurate official results post- race. The Race Office also needs to be advised of competitors who may be transported from the course direct to the Medical Recovery Area at the Finish Compound. Visit the Compex Recovery tent at the event and enter the competition to win 1 x Compex SP 8.0 valued at $1725. The Lucky winner will be selected at 2pm Sunday Feb 24th and will walk away with their brand new Compex SP 8.0 on the day, or have it send to them via courier. SWIM COURSE 1.9KM / 1KM The swim course closes 1 hour after your official wave start time. Failure to meet this time will result in a DNF (did not finish) classification. The Ultimate and Aquabike course is a two lap 1.9km open water triangular shaped swim in the crystal clear waters of Jervis Bay with a beach start on Huskisson Beach. The Classic course is a single 1km lap of this triangle. The depth of the water varies throughout and there is a tidal current. At the swim finish, swim as close to the shore as possible prior to standing. There will be many trained personnel along the Swim Course (boats and surfboards) to assist you in case of any medical emergency while you are in the water. If you experience difficulties during the swim and require assistance, raise your arm. You may use a float or stationary craft to support yourself to regain composure before continuing and not incur a penalty. If you obtain other assistance, you will be disqualified from taking further part in the race. WETSUITS The Triathlon Australia appointed Technical Delegate will take the water temperature 24 hours before race start and the reading will be displayed at Registration on Saturday afternoon. The water temperature will be taken again on race morning and the wearing of wet suits will be conditional upon water temperature. The temperature of the water should be in the vicinity of 22C. If, however, the temperature is well below this due to freak conditions it is possible the swim could be shortened. Wetsuits and an additional cap/s are advisable in such conditions. Wetsuits may be checked for acceptable thickness and illegal flotation inserts. Wetsuits which do not meet Triathlon Australia acceptable standards in this regard may result in disqualification after the swim. SWIM START: There will be minimum (4) wave starts commencing at 6:30 am and separated by five (5) minute intervals. Swim caps will be colour coded according to each wave. Details of your wave start grouping will be issued at Saturday Registration and available again on race morning. You will be called to the start line from the bike compound into your wave. You should ensure you assemble according to your swim cap colour and move to the start line without undue delay. You must not move beyond the start line. You will have sufficient time for a warm up before being called back to the line. N.B. Technical Officials will monitor competitor behaviour during the swim. Breaches of rules will result in a three minute time penalty prior to entering the bike compound area. Check out the course maps on the website
FELT BIKE COURSE 90KM / 60KM There are significant changes to the cycle course in 2019. Both previous and new competitors need to be familiar with the course. The cycle course closes for each competitor 5 hours after the start of their individual wave start time (3 hours for Classic athletes). Due to road closure restrictions, this will be enforced. After exiting the water, athletes will run up the southern stairs from the beach turning right onto the footpath and continue to the bike compound. Athletes will commence the Bike Course at the northern end of White Sands Park, at the official start line marked on Bowen St. They must walk/run their bike within the compound and only mount at this line. The cycle course takes an immediate left onto Hawke St, to a u-turn just before Nowra St. The course then follows Hawke St to the roundabout at the Huskisson Hotel, turning left onto Owen St (the main street of Huskisson). At the Huskisson Pictures corner, cyclists turn right onto Sydney St, where they continue along Tomerong St, which turns into a gradual climb up Huskisson Rd. At the “T” intersection with Jervis Bay Rd, the course does another u-turn, with a fast descent back towards Huskisson. At the service station, cyclists take a left at Woollamia Rd and follow this until a left turn onto Fairfax Rd. The course then takes a sharp right onto Knoll Parade, then a left back onto Woollamia Rd. At the end of Woollamia Rd, cyclists will have another fast section back towards the Woollamia township. After Woollamia, athletes will head back into Huskisson via Tomerong St, Sydney St and Owen St. Turning right at the Huskisson Hotel onto Hawke St, athletes will pass transition and complete the first lap heading straight on to commence their second lap. Ultimate and Aquabike competitors then complete this same course another 2 times and on the 3rd lap finishing on Bowen St at the bike finish line. Classic competitors will complete only 2 laps of this course. NB The one cycle aid station is located half way along Hawke St. Check out the course maps on the website
HOKA ONE ONE RUN COURSE 21.1KM / 10KM After leaving the bike leg and commencing the run, athletes will have wished this to be a marathon. The 21.1km run leg will be a 2 lap out and back course. The 10km Classic run leg is 1 lap, out and back. Runners will exit from White Sands Beach Park and run along the footpath / cycleway that snakes along the foreshore of Jervis Bay. The run course turns up the finish chute, before turning to head out onto lap 2. "If you've ever been to Big Husky you've probably met the crew from HOKA ONE ONE Australia. OTHER IMPORTANT INFO Technical Support There will be a Technical Delegate, Race Referee and Chief Technical Official appointed by Triathlon Australia to administer ALL race rules for the entire race from 6.30 am to 3.00 pm. It is expected that you be acquainted with these rules. Additional trained and accredited Technical Officials will cover the entire course. Pre-Race Training When cycling or running locally, remember the NSW Traffic rules of the road. Do not ride two abreast on narrow road sections and obey all traffic rules. Being a competitor does not exempt you from the NSW law. Be courteous to motorists - they could be your volunteers on race day. Wearing of helmets whilst cycling is compulsory in NSW and NSW Police can issue on-the-spot fines for breach of this law. Bring a chain and lock for your bike whenever you leave it. Lights and reflectors are necessary for night riding. Whilst swim training, do not swim alone and always wear a bright swim cap. Withdrawal If you need to withdraw from the race prior to race day, please contact us as soon as possible at office@eliteenergy.com.au. If you need to withdraw during the event, please advise the Race Office as soon as practical, and also return your timing chip. This is very important to ensure all competitors are accounted for and safe. Remember that failure to return the timing chip will incur a $150 fee. Medical Insurance / Waiver You are reminded of your acceptance of entry conditions, waiver release and indemnification. Please note this is a legal part of the form and affects your rights. You have attested your physical condition has been verified by a registered medical practitioner. If you have developed a medical condition since you registered to enter, this should be brought to attention and where appropriate a medical certificate produced.
Medical Fitness / Waiver Please ask for medical help if you have the slightest hint you may need it during the race. There will be an ambulance on stand-by at all times. Note also that if you are transported by ambulance you could be required to meet costs involved unless covered by an appropriate medical fund. Any aid given by race medical personnel on the course is permissible and will not lead to disqualification, excluding the swim section. If, however, you have any outside assistance you may be disqualified. You will be withdrawn from the race only if you require transportation, IV fluids, or if medical personnel consider your continued participation presents a danger to the health or welfare of you or others. The medical aid station at the start will handle any injuries or medical problems that arise prior to the start and during the swim. Those competitors who advised on the entry application of specific medical conditions will be listed to facilitate treatment by our medical staff on the course e.g. the Ambulance personnel will be provided with a list of these competitors and their specific condition. As per your agreed waiver, if you have any medical conditions that you need to make our Medical Director aware of, please email office@eliteenergy.com.au. Outside Assistance There are sufficient viewing areas on the swim, cycle and run legs for your family, friends, coaches and supporters to see you during the race. Do not allow them to cause you to be disqualified by being on the course with you. Think of all the training you have put in, only to have a well-meaning relative, friend, etc. cause this to happen in one instant. Officials at Aid Stations and on the course, as well as the Police, have the authority to report to the Race Referee to disqualify and take you off the course for a breach of this race rule. There is absolutely no provision for having anyone running, walking, cycling, driving beside or near you. Tell them to go away even if they are well meaning and only wanting to offer encouragement. They can still do this as you go by. We have enough trouble controlling the normal traffic flow for your safety. Outside assistance also includes being provided with sustenance other than that offered at official aid stations. You may not have special foods at any aid station. Your supporters must not offer any items to you during the event nor can you leave any items secreted on the course or at aid stations. Triathlon Australia Technical Officials will be active on the run course as well as the swim and cycle courses.
Illegal Items: Requests from well-meaning friends/ relatives to hand items to competitors during the race is not permitted and will lead to disqualification, so advise them before the race. Outside Assistance also means no use of headphones or mobile phones. Important Teams Information Only one member of your team (the Cyclist) needs to collect the race pack at registration on the Saturday. Your timing chip is the team baton. Team members can assist in removing the timing chip from one team member to another. For example when the swimmer reaches the rider of their team in transition the runner from the team can be there and remove the chip from the swimmer and place it around the left ankle of the rider. When the rider returns, the swimmer can assist by removing the timing chip from the rider and place it on the left ankle of the runner. Cut Off Times Each leg of the triathlon has a cut off time for the safety of the athletes and the limitations placed on the event organisers by the authorities. These times are:- • Swim – 1 hour after your official wave start time • Cycle – 5hrs after your official wave start time (3 hours for Classic athletes) • Run – 8hrs hrs after your official wave start time (5.5 hours for Classic athletes) • Overall – ALL athletes must complete the entire course within 8 hours (5.5 for Classic) or their timing chip will be removed and they may be deemed DNF (Did Not Finish).
Finish Line And Recovery Procedures In the finish chute remember to keep your head up and ensure any headgear does not obscure your face. Also ensure your race number is correctly positioned and displayed at the front on upper clothing. As you cross the line, trained catchers will be there to “escort” you to the secured finish compound. These catchers will endeavour to briefly assess you as you proceed and may need to take you directly to the medical tent for treatment. After crossing the Finish Line, you will move into a secured area where refreshments will be available for you. Note that prior to exiting the finish area, you must remove your timing band and hand this in to officials. Medical Treatment For those who unfortunately find themselves requiring medical treatment at the Finish/Recovery area, you will possibly require I.V. fluid replacement. Assessment of this need will be made by independent medical staff and not by the competitor. Note also the possibility of transfer to hospital by ambulance and the cost involved should you not be covered. We’re keen to keep the planet green! We’re utilising reusable cups at aid stations. We’re providing an opportunity to recycle your cap – just chuck it in the bucket on your way into transition after the swim.
