PROGRAM INFORMATION AND DETAILS
PANILISTS:
                                  DR. AALIYAH A. SAMUEL
                                  Dr. Aaliyah A. Samuel takes the helm at CASEL during a time of unprecedented growth for the
                                  field of social emotional learning (SEL), spearheading initiatives alongside other educators,
                                  researchers, and policy leaders to expand SEL nationwide and serving as a leading voice for
                                  children’s education.
                                  Dr. Samuel previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary, Local, State and National
                                  Engagement at the U.S. Department of Education, as a Senior Fellow at the Center on the
Child at Harvard University, and former Executive Vice President of Government Affairs & Partnerships at NWEA. Dr. Samuel is a
bilingual executive leader with expertise from early childhood through higher education. Her experience includes program
evaluation and evidence-based programs; data collection and disaggregation; family and community engagement support
strategies; and policy development and implementation at the local, state, and national level. She has informed state policy
agendas, assisted with developing cross systems approaches to develop policy solutions to support children and families and
leading systems-level change. In her role at NWEA, she led a team working on driving a state and federal education agenda. Prior
to NWEA, Dr. Samuel was the Director of Education at the National Governors Association (NGA). While at NGA, her work
included business development, strategic planning, and supporting high-ranking state officials on the development of policies
that impacted health, education, and workforce. She has worked with diverse constituents, philanthropies, and national partners.
Dr. Samuel holds an undergraduate degree from Tuskegee University, a Masters from University of South Florida, and a
Specialist and Doctorate Degree from NOVA Southeastern.

                                  DR. RICK LEICHTWEIS, PHD
                                  Rick Leichtweis, PhD, serves as Executive Director for Inova Kellar Center and joined the
                                  organization in 1991. His responsibilities include the executive level oversight for the strategic
                                  direction and general operation of Inova Kellar Center and the Kellar School, including all
                                  clinical, educational and administrative functions in partnership with a leadership team of
                                  content experts. Additionally, Dr. Leichtweis is active in providing education and increasing
                                  awareness of the specific mental health and substance use disorder needs of children
throughout the community. During his tenure he has partnered with senior Inova leadership and community partners to raise
millions dollars in philanthropic support to provide direct services to children and families who have limited or no resources for
treatment.
A leader in the educational and mental health field, Dr. Leichtweis has extensive experience in developing mental health and
substance use disorder treatment and special education programs. In his role in the community, he represents private providers,
serving as the co-chairman of Fairfax County Community Management and Policy Team, is a board member of the Successful
Child and Youth Policy Team of Fairfax County and a board member on the Community System of Care Team and the Virginia
Coalition of Private Providers Association. Additionally, Dr. Leichtweis serves as a Board Member of Community Not-for-Profit
agencies dedicated to the improvement of the health within our community.

MEET YOUR VSBA
                     NORTHEASTERN REGION
                          OFFICERS
                                      Karen Corbett Sanders believes that Fairfax County must provide a world class education
                                      to each of its students no matter where they live. She takes pride in the fact that the
                                      Mount Vernoncommunity has a rich history of developing leaders including George
                                      Washington and George Mason. She feels that we owe it to history to ensure Mount
                                      Vernon students have access to a world class education in the community's schools.
                                      Corbett Sanders is committed to working full-time to ensure that each school is a center
                                      of academic excellence. Born and raised in Fairfax County, Corbett Sanders is a retired
                                      international business executive, a community advocate for healthcare and education
                                      issues, past PTA president, and Odyssey of the Mind coach. She has served on Boards of
  KAREN CORBETT SANDERS, VSBA         Directors and operating committees for international telecommunications companies
    NORTHEASTERN REGION CHAIR
                                      and, locally, on the Quality Board of Inova Children’s Hospital and the Regional Board
for Odyssey of the Mind. Corbett Sanders has a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame and a master's degree from
Boston University. She serves on the parent advisory board of Creighton University.

Dr. Michelle Rief is a former college professor and education non-profit executive. She is
a parent of three Alexandria public school students and has held leadership positions in
the Mount Vernon Community School PTA, and the Alexandria PTA Council.

Michelle was born into a military family and attended public schools in Iowa, California,
and Florida. She was the first in her family to graduate from college, earning her degree
from Florida State University and later her PhD in African American Studies at Temple
University. As a graduate student, she directed a non-profit prison education program
where she taught life skills to incarcerated individuals, many of whom had dropped out of

school. Michelle went on to become a professor at Borough of Manhattan Community
                                                                                          NORTHEASTERN REGION VICE CHAIR
College in New York, and later at Northern Virginia Community College teaching history
and sociology courses. Michelle has lived in Alexandria for 15 years with her husband and three children, who attend Alexandria
City High School and Mount Vernon Community School. She was first elected to the Alexandria School Board in 2018 and
currently serves as the School Board liaison to Alexandria City High School, Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School, the Career
and Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Committee, and the City of Alexandria’s IT Commission.

JOINING THE MEETING
Join a meeting by clicking on the Zoom link sent from Zoom after you registered for the meeting. You must register first. The link sent by VSBA is
only for registration and will NOT give you access to the meeting.

If this is your first Zoom meeting on your device, click download and run Zoom. The Zoom.exe file will download, and you will need to open the file.
Please note this only needs to be done once for any device on which you use Zoom for the first time. If you have already participated in a Zoom
meeting, you do not have to download it again.

Note: You do not need a Zoom account to participate in Zoom meetings hosted by VSBA.

CHOOSE VIDEO LAYOUT
At the upper right of your screen you can switch between Speaker View and Gallery View. You can also enter/exit full screen by clicking icon to right
of Gallery/Speaker View. Speaker view will only show the active speaker. Gallery view will show all attendees in smaller boxes. When there is a large
number of attendees, there may be an arrow to scroll through the pages of attendees.

ZOOM CONTROL BAR
Hover over the bottom of your active Zoom meeting window for the control bar to see your controls:

MUTE
You can Mute/Unmute your microphone by clicking the microphone icon.

START VIDEO
If your device has a camera, you can turn it on/off by clicking the Start Video icon .

PARTICIPANTS
If you click on Participants, you can see who is currently in the meeting. The participants list also gives you the option to rename yourself.
     Rename - hover over your name to change it as it is seen in the participants list & video window

CHAT
Use this feature to ask questions during the meeting. You can send a question or statement to everyone or privately to a VSBA staff member. It will
be monitored by VSBA staff.

LEAVE MEETING
You can leave the meeting at any time by clicking on Leave Meeting button.

ETIQUETTE TIPS:
Prior to the meeting:
     Dress to impress: It’s easy to give in to the temptation to wear sweatpants and an old t-shirt because you’re working from home. Dress for your
     video conference the way you would for an in-person meeting.

During your meeting:
     Mute your microphone when necessary: Zoom has a “Mute Microphone” option that cuts down on ambient feedback for the audience.
     Use Zoom’s chat function: You can send a question or statement to everyone or privately to a VSBA staff member.
     Think about your actions on camera: Always remember that everyone can see you. Someone is watching as you take a big, wide-mouth yawn,
     stretch, or wander around the room. These exaggerated movements are distracting to the audience and can be disruptive to the speaker. Try to
     stay still and be attentive!
