January 2019 meeting Our January General Business meeting was cancelled due to Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Hall Community Center being closed while employees attended their annual safety meeting offsite. The maintenance man came in at 9:30 so we could have our Board Meeting, however, he had to vacate the building by 11:30 which would not allow us time to have a Business Meeting. We were not notified of this closure so we could let members know. We made a decision to have the program presented and since Hospitality provided snacks, they were served. Thanks to Claudia Dutcher‐Kinsler for presenting a shortened and sped up program on Quaker samplers. Several members also brought samplers for our viewing. It was a very interesting presentation and we look forward to having Claudia continue her program at a future meeting. In Claudia’s words “I consider what you saw to be the preview to the movie.” PROGRAMS – Sandy DeBolt February: Sandra Murray will present a program on learning Blackwork Sandra will handout a history about Blackwork and show us how to read a Blackwork Chart by finding the stitch path. To check out how a stitch path works, we will stitch on 10 count canvas with 2 colors of thread. Needle, thread, and canvas will be provided. Bring 2 contrasting colored pencils or Red and Black pens for the program. March: Suzanne Knepper will present a program on felt embroidery HOSPITALITY ‐ Janet Hintz Helen Salkowski and Janet Hintz have volunteered for hospitality at the February 7th meeting. LIBRARY ‐ Suzanne Knepper The new library on line catalogue system is now available. Access is available through this link: https://cloud.collectorz.com/egalibrarytucson/books. Our hope is that our membership will use this resource more by having this computerized access. Please check out the site. We appreciate your feedback. STITCH IN PUBLIC DAY February 2, 2019‐ Maura Robinson EGA celebrates needle arts by hosting a Stitch‐In‐Public Day in February each year. The primary focus of Stitching‐In‐Public is to share our passion for needle arts with the public by demonstrating our talents. Take your favorite stitching project and stitching friend out to a park, mall or other location to show the public what we do!
The PIMA COUNTY FAIR – Betsy Smullen Demonstrating The Pima County Fair is Thursday, April 18th through Sunday, April 28th this year. We have an opportunity to demonstrate needlework on Saturday, April 20th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the air‐conditioned Old Pueblo Hall. We will have a couple of 8‐foot tables for stitching and display. We will have electricity available to us, so you are welcome to bring your own task light. We will also have a glass display case into which we can put smaller items for the day. Sign up with Betsy Smullen to take a 4‐hour shift before January 31st. All demonstrators receive an entry pass and a parking pass. Exhibiting To enter an exhibit in this year’s fair, you can find the paperwork at pimacountyfair.com. On the homepage, hover on the first box that says “Fair” and scroll down to Entries for Artwork, Crafts and Livestock. The pages of most interest to us would be 4‐7. Entries are $2 each and paperwork needs to be postmarked by March 10. Plenty of time to get something ready for the fair! BEADING We have an opening for someone to lead our Beading Group which meets the second Thursday of each month at 9:30 at Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Community Center. In the meantime we will have discussions each meeting about projects we would like to do at our future meetings and invite the members to volunteer to lead the projects. Upcoming projects will be included in the President’s message before our General meetings each month and in the Newsletter As part of the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show that comes to Tucson each year in late January and early February, there are a couple venues that are devoted mostly to Beads. Pacific Southwest Region ‐ Helen Salkowski WANTED YOU!! PSR is looking for someone who would be willing to be the 2021 Region Seminar Chair. Please continue to read on. PSR has set up an advisory committee to help with region seminars. This committee is composed of past seminar chairmen (Pat Correz and Marilyn Evans), and the 2023 chairman, Becky Acosta as well as Ruth Plummer. They would like to add the 2021 chairman to the advisory committee also. The advisory committee is working on creating written guidelines for putting on a region seminar. This will also help the 2021 seminar chair. PSR is the only region without written guidelines for seminars. The Advisory Committee has read all the various region guidelines and is creating guidelines for PSR. The 2021 Region Seminar Chair will have experienced help from Marilyn and Pat. Locations and dates are already being looked into. We have had members already volunteer to be committee chairs and volunteers. I realize that 2021 seems like a long time in the future but it takes planning. It might even be best if two people become co‐chairs. We have many people in our region willing to help with seminars but need a seminar chair to coordinate. WE NEED YOU!!! Please contact: Judie Neufeld rwn932 at yahoo.com
