CITY OF WHITTIER Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department VolunTEEN Program PURPOSE: • Provide a mentorship and leadership-training program for Whittier teens ages 14-17 years interested in both enhancing life and work skills and gaining on-the-job training. Staff will emphasize leadership development, teamwork, and professionalism. • Provide an opportunity for teens to work side-by-side with the recreation staff in the City’s summer programs and camps. • Provide an opportunity for teens to be involved in the community and make a difference in recreation programs while earning community service credit. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: • VolunTEENS will be assigned to various recreational summer programs and supervised while assisting with the planning and facilitation of daily youth recreational activities. • VounTEENS must be able to commit to working assigned hours with the exception of up to a two-week, pre-approved vacation. VolunTEENS are expected to attend each of the Monday training meetings during the summer programming. VolunTEEN RESPONSIBILITIES: • Required to adhere to the rules and behavioral policies outlined in the VolunTEEN Contract. • Attend all mandatory trainings, meetings, and scheduled shifts. • Show respect toward the staff, their peers, and the participants with whom they work with. • Will participate and complete assigned tasks to the best of their ability. SELECTION PROCEDURE: • VolunTEEN applications are available at the Whittier Community Center and online at www.cityofwhittier.org • Be between the ages of 14-17 years (as of May 26, 2021). • Be selected for their assignments based on their maturity, skills, leadership experience, and schedule of availability. It is at staff’s discretion to place or not place VolunTEENS in a specific program. Everyone that submits a completed application by the deadline will receive an email letter regarding selection during the week of May 31, 2021. MONDAY TRAINING MEETINGS: A key component of the Program is the Monday training meetings. These mandatory meetings are held on Mondays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., during summer programming. • Each meeting will involve fun and interactive activities as well as learning skills to help prepare for the job market. • Teens will be taught to follow the City’s safety guidelines. • A missed meeting due to a planned vacation, requires prior approval from the VolunTEEN Program Lead. Those who are unable to attend the Monday meetings will not be selected into the program. The first meeting scheduled Monday, June 7, 2021, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
VolunTEEN/PARENTS MEETING • A Zoom link will be emailed the week of the meeting May 31 • All VolunTEENS selected and their parents will be asked to attend. VolunTEEN IMPORTANT DATES and EVENTS • Application and Contract due by Wednesday May 26, 2021, by 5:00 p.m. • VolunTEEN and Parents Meeting – on Zoom Thursday, June 3rd. • Monday Meetings begin – Monday, June 7, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. • Firework Event at York Field – Sunday, July 4, 2021. Time: 4 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. • Family Movie Nights Saturday Evenings – June 26, July 24, August 28, and September 18 • Concerts in the Park – Friday evenings, July 9, July 16, July 23, July 30, August 6, August 13. • VolunTEENs are required to work a minimum of 10 hours at scheduled special events. Additional hours is highly encouraged. COMPLETION OF VOLUNTEEN SUMMER PROGRAM • After successful completion of the Program, each VolunTEEN will receive verification of hours and receive a certificate of completion. VolunTEENS may request letters of recommendation for future employment and/or scholarships. • If the VolunTEEN is unable to attend any mandatory training days for the program for which he/she wishes to volunteer, he/she may forfeit the position as a VolunTEEN and will not be eligible to collect any community service hours performed. VolunTEEN School Year Program • Completion of program will provide the opportunity to continue to volunteer for our school year WYN Club program and additional City events. COVID SAFTEY PROCEDURES For everyone’s safety, VolunTEENS are to observe the following guidelines: • Temperatures will be taken upon arrival. • Frequent hand washing and sanitizing. • Always maintain social distancing. • Keep hands and feet to themselves. • Wear face covering. • Follow directions of staff for all safety procedures.

Failure to comply with the VolunTEEN Contract will result in the following consequences: 1st violation: Verbal warning and review of contract. Staff will discuss the inappropriate behavior or conduct with the VolunTEEN and review the expectations and responsibilities of their position. 2nd violation: Staff will make a phone call to parent to discuss inappropriate behavior/conduct and/or failure to meet the expectations and responsibilities of the VolunTEEN Program. 3rd violation: Reduction of hours and in office meeting between staff, VolunTEEN, and parent/guardian. 4th violation: Dismissal of VolunTEEN from the program. • Violations will be noted on the VolunTEEN’s formal evaluation at the end of summer. • The Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department reserves the right to handle extreme violations of the VolunTEEN Contract at their own discretion. • In situations where the VolunTEEN’s actions jeopardize the safety of anyone involved in our programs, the VolunTEEN will immediately be dismissed. CITY OF WHITTIER RELEASE FROM LIABILITY AND INDEMNIFICATION I agree to waive and release the Parks, Recreation, & Community Services Department and the City of Whittier, its officers, and employees from and against any and all claims, liabilities, expenses, or judgments, including attorney’s fees and court cost arising from my child’s participation in the City’s recreation program or accruing after my child has been released to me at the below stated time, or any and all illness/injury resulting there from, and hereby agree to indemnify and hold harmless the City of Whittier, its officers, agents, and employees from and against any and all such claims, whether caused by negligence or otherwise, except for illness and injury resulting directly from gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the City of Whittier or its officers, agents, or employees. I understand and agree that by signing this waiver I am releasing the City of Whittier, its officers, agents, or employees, from any and all liability resulting from my (or my child’s) participation in this City sponsored event or activity. I recognize that this event or activity can be dangerous to me (or my child) and accept those dangers. I understand that if I am (or my child is) injured during my (or my child’s) participation in the City sponsored event or activity, or after the time of my child’s release, this waiver will be used against me and anyone else claiming damage because of my (or my child’s) injury in any legal action. I also understand that no City officer, employee or agent is authorized to modify this waiver.
