SPRING STAGE RACE BIBLE 2022 1 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2022 Spring Stage Race! We are so happy that you have decided to participate and hope that you have a safe and fun experience! Please read this race bible thoroughly; it should answer most questions and provides details on each individual stage, as well as race rules. Should you have any additional questions, please refer to the race director and/or club president. We have done our best to summarize everything here, but note that some details may be subject to change once the event is underway. 2 SPRING STAGE RACE AT A GLANCE Here is a quick overview of the stages and event details. SPRING STAGE RACE BIBLE 2022 3 IMPORTANT DETAILS ● Registration for the Series or any Stage will be online only. Online registration will be available for the entire series until 9 pm, Wednesday, May 4th. Registration for individual stages will close at 9 pm the night prior to the stage. ● All racers (even if you are pre-registered) must sign-in at the registration table prior to each stage. Racer sign-in will open 1½ hours prior to each event and will close 30 minutes before the start. If you have not signed in at least 30 minutes prior to your event, you risk having your name pulled from the start list. ● Racer meetings will occur 15 minutes prior to each event. ● Racers are free to choose their category based on ability level. Racers may not change their category once the event is underway. In the interest of fairness, the race director may upgrade a racer to a higher division if warranted by that racer’s performance. If you feel that you have selected the wrong category, please contact the race director. For stage series, categories with fewer than five racers will be combined with a similar category for both racing and results. ● Timing will be conducted using RFID number tags attached to your seat post. These tags must be picked up prior to the race during check in and returned after the race at the pick up location or to the race director. 4 RACE RULES It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with and adhere to these rules – read them carefully! Failure to follow these rules may result in disqualification from the race. Number plates: RFID number tags must be attached to your seat post pointing away from your rear end, and must be visible and unobstructed at all times. Sign-in: Racers must sign in at least 30 minutes prior to each event! Failure to do so may result in being excluded from your event. Combined Categories: Categories of similar ability may be combined for mass start events. Racers may draft and work with any other racers in the group with which they start, and will still be scored within their individual category. Racers may not draft or work with racers from groups with which they did not start. Helmets: Helmets must be worn at all times while riding your bike. This includes before and after events – even if you are just riding around the parking lot. Riding without a helmet at any time is grounds for immediate disqualification. Helmets are not required while warming up or cooling down on a stationary trainer.
SPRING STAGE RACE BIBLE 2022 Earpieces and Headphones: Devices with earpieces and/or headphones are not permitted at any time while riding (including before and after racing), during any stage. Headphones may be worn for trainer warm-ups, but not at any time when your bicycle is in motion. Aerobars: Aerobars are permitted on Stage 3. Fertility-threatening skinsuits, however, are encouraged on ALL stages. Drafting: Drafting is permitted in Stages 2 & 4. Drafting is prohibited in Stages 1 & 3. Yellow line: The yellow line rule is in effect for all stages. Riders may not cross the yellow line lane divider at any time. If a painted yellow line is not present, riders must stay as far to the right as possible. This is extremely important to ensure riders’ safety. Failure to follow this rule may result in disqualification. Support: Support/follow cars will not be provided by the race organizers, and follow cars for individual racers are prohibited. Where appropriate there will be designated pit areas for spare wheels and other equipment. Outside support is permitted only within these pit areas. Racers may take assistance from teammates or other racers. Outside support is not permitted on course. Accepting a hand-up from a moving vehicle is not permitted in any stage. Neutral zones: In Stages 2 & 4, the feed zone is a neutral zone, except during prime laps and the last lap of the race. Attacking and passing are not permitted if a racer is clearly attempting to take support within the neutral zone. Please be courteous of your fellow racers, and allow others to collect food and clothing safely. Racers taking support should signal their intention to do so. Riding Position: Racers may not support themselves on their top tubes and/or assume the “supertuck” position at any time. Racers are encouraged to maintain hand contact with their bars or brake hoods at all times, especially when riding in groups. Riders may place their forearms on the handlebar in the mock TT position, but should exercise caution when doing so. Specifically, they should take account of other riders, action within the group, wind and weather, vehicle traffic, road condition and surface. Whenever turning on course or maneuvering around the group, hands must be holding bars or brake hoods. 5 OTHER DETAILS UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT Unsportsmanlike conduct of any kind will not be tolerated – period. When you are on your bicycle, you are a role model for other racers, cyclists, and the club. Be competitive, but be courteous and respectful of others. None of us are getting paid to do this. PROTESTS AND DISPUTES Race officials will not be present on the road with the racers, so racers must be self-governing. All perceived rule violations must be reported within 30 minutes after the race finish. Perceived errors in the results must be reported in a timely manner to the race director after results are posted, and at least one hour before the start of the next stage. Disputes will be resolved by the members of the Arctic Bicycle Club – Road Division Committee.
SPRING STAGE RACE BIBLE 2022 6 COMPETITIONS OMNIUM All racers competing in at least one event will be eligible for points. Racers who cannot complete a stage due to a mishap or major mechanical problem may be given finish points, at the race director’s discretion (see also “free laps” under rules). Placing will be based on highest overall accumulated points, including any bonuses earned and/or penalties incurred. Finish points will be infinitely as follows: 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,... (i.e., every rider will receive at least one point). POINT BONUSES Bonuses will be awarded as indicated in the individual stage descriptions. Bonuses are applied to overall standings and do not affect the stage placing. Racers who are relegated or disqualified may be stripped of their bonuses for that stage only, in which case the bonuses would roll down to the next racer(s) in the finishing order. 7 AWARDS Awards may include post-race beverages and other goodies. There will be no commemorative awards such as medals or plaques, but if you win you’ll never forget it and you should constantly remind others if they forget. 8 RESULTS Results will be posted after each stage on the road division website: https://arcticbicycleclub.org/arcticroadhome/ In addition, live timing will be available at the events. To stay updated with the latest news and be informed as soon as results are available, be sure to follow the road division on Facebook and Strava. 9 OVERVIEW OF STAGES The following pages provide added detail and maps for each stage and should answer most questions. Please contact the race director or club president should you have additional questions regarding any stage or event details.
