1 1.0 INTRODUCTION & GENERAL INFORMATION Gymnastics Canada has created a selection process as outlined below while recognizing that environmental and safety concerns related to COVID-19 may have an impact on events and activities at the International and National level. Thus, the following plans and processes may be subject to change and every effort will be made to ensure such changes are made diligently and fairly and are conveyed in a timely manner. Canada can qualify an additional berth to the Tokyo Olympic Games by placing in the top 3 countries of the final All-Around World Cup ranking. Participation at: • World Championships 2019 or • All-Around World Cup (American Cup 2020, Stuttgart 2021, Birmingham 2021, Tokyo 2021) or • Apparatus World Cup (Cottbus 2019, Melbourne 2020, Baku 2020 or Doha 2021) • 2021 Pan Am Championships is required to attend the Olympics in an individual position. (if a 5th or 6th berth is earned by Canada following All-Around World Cup series and Sr Pan Am Championships) This selection process has been produced in order to clarify the process being used by Gymnastics Canada in order to assign athletes to the upcoming World Cup series. This individual position is not athlete specific in terms of qualification i.e., An athlete who qualifies in the Top 3, thereby earning a spot for Canada, is not guaranteed to be selected for the Olympic Games. Their selection will be made through the selection process (see GymCan's website). 2.0 ELIGIBILITY ⮚ All Senior NT athletes, age-eligible Espoir and any Senior athlete being considered for discretionary card for the 2021 cycle as nominated by GymCan in December 2020. 3.0 AVAILABLE EVENTS All-Around World Cup ● Stuttgart (March 20-21) 1 athlete and potential to name up to 2 reserve athletes ● Birmingham (March 27- TBC) 1 athlete and potential to name up to 2 reserve athletes ● Tokyo (May 2 or 9) 1 athlete and potential to send one travelling reserve Apparatus World Cup ● Cottbus (February 25-28) – up to 2 athletes based on All-Around scores. ● Baku (March 4-7)- will participate only if Gymnix does not occur, up to 2 athletes based on All-Around scores. ● Doha (Mar 10 - 13) - up to 8 athletes (apparatus specialists), maximum 2 athletes per apparatus P: 613.748.5691 | F: 613.748.5637 | E: info@GymCan.org 120-1900 Promenade City Park Drive, Ottawa, ON K1J 1A3 WWW.GYMCAN.ORG
2 4.0 PRIORITIZATION OF ASSIGNMENTS All-Around World Cups 1. GymCan can select the same or different athletes to compete at each event. 2. Athletes will be selected based on greatest demonstrated potential to achieve the highest All- Around score, using all available information (recent scores, past scores, health status, consistency) Results for consideration in priority order for would be: 1) Any international scores from 2021 before nominative deadlines 2) Elite Canada 2021 (February 2021) 3) 2 virtual competitions prior to Elite Canada, one between November 1st 2020 and January 7th 2021 and one between January 8th 2021 to January 21st 2021, 5pm EST. 4) Scores from October 1st 2019 to March 31st 2020 5) 1 set of best routines: deadline to submit January 27 st 2021, 5pm EST. Other factors taken into consideration would be the difficulty or content of the routine (D Score) along with level of execution (E score). Apparatus World Cup (Cottbus, Baku) 1) Top 2 athletes from All-Around ranking based on virtual competitions would get priority a. 3 5.0 PROCESS FOR VIDEO ROUTINES The process for submitting routines has been detailed below to ensure consistency and equivalent standards for all eligible athletes. VIRTUAL COMPETITIONS For virtual competitions athletes will be expected to warm-up and compete within one pre- determined training session. • Athletes are welcome to use as much warm-up time as necessary • Athlete will indicate to the judge onsite her readiness to perform • Athlete will present to the judge onsite • Once the athlete presents (puts hand up), she will compete and that routine will be filmed. • Only one attempt per apparatus is permitted • Athletes must complete the entire virtual competition within 4 hours. • A brevet judge will be required to be on site to ensure that guidelines have been respected. • The onsite judge will not judge the routines or communicate any scores with the athlete or coaches but will be responsible for onsite logistics and requirements as listed below. STEP 1: Club is responsible for confirming virtual competition time and date with GymCan and local Brevet Judge a minimum of 3 days in advance. If possible, it is recommended that the club supply a volunteer to assist the BJ with the videotaping of the routines. Clubs are able to invite any available local Brevet judge (BJ), please refer to Appendix 1 for a list of Brevet Judges. Please note that national team coaches who are also BJ cannot act as on-site judges. Also judges who have been assigned as the Virtual Competition D and/or E Panel Judges cannot act as on-site judges. If no other judge is available, CHJ will have the ability to approve an assigned judge or alternate judge (National or Brevet Candidat). Athletes in the US for NCAA are able to invite a local US judge. The name of that judge and contact information must be submitted to and approved by the CHJ. STEP 2: Brevet judge arrives on-site to verify equipment and ensure that competition guidelines are respected. Onsite judge will be responsible for: o equipment verification (see Equipment section below) o overall timing of the Virtual Competition o ensure total time is respected (maximum 4 hours to complete upon scheduled arrival time of on-site judge) o filming from the position of the D1 and at a sufficient distance to capture the entire body/routine. Use a stationary camera (ipad on a tripod is recommended). It is recommended that the BJ and the Coach along with a volunteer assigned as the videographer test the video requirements to ensure a high level of quality in the video routines. Factors such as physical obstructions in the gym and lighting may need to be addressed. P: 613.748.5691 | F: 613.748.5637 | E: info@GymCan.org 120-1900 Promenade City Park Drive, Ottawa, ON K1J 1A3 WWW.GYMCAN.ORG
4 o Ensure the video will capture the whole routine so that the whole body is in view at all times. o For Vault please capture 3-4 steps before contact with the springboard, if possible. Ensure that height above the vault and landing area are captured. o For Uneven Bars ensure the video captures the entire body below and above the bars as well as landing area o For Balance Beam ensure that the entire mount and the dismount (with landing area/allow for steps) are captured o For Floor ensure that all tumbling lines and landings are visible on the video. o Responsible for signaling for start of routine once gymnast has indicated readiness to present o If possible can give an audio cue for the virtual judging panel who will watch the videos of the routines (e.g., indicate verbally for video or show the number of the vault to be performed and also verbally indicate the start of run for vault) o Be prepared to time routines and note all time violations o Be prepared to observe and note out of bounds violations o Submit all time and line deductions and any other neutral deductions via email to the CHJ (lynn.smith@umr.umanitoba.ca) using resport form in Appendix 2. STEP 3: Competition simulation o Athletes must complete routines within one training session that is no longer than 4 hours. o On-site judge calls athlete, that routine is filmed and athlete must use that attempt for their virtual competition. o Canadian rules are in effect for falls and time once hand is up and routine is started. STEP 4: Judge to submit videos and Appendix 2 immediately following competition upload in dropbox using the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/request/nQVe1qwmdVFEUbzGhdr9 All videos should be named as: ATHLETE NAME_APPARATUS_COMPETITION For COMPETITION, please indicate the following: • Virtual competition 1 or 2 or 3 • Best Routines For filming it is mandatory to have a back-up device also recording.
