2021 RUNNER GUIDE 2021 RUNNER GUIDE - Ultra-Trail Australia
RACE DIRECTOR MESSAGE

Welcome to Ultra-Trail Australia 2021.

A lot has taken place since we last felt the magic that’s about to happen when we finally get back
together and return to the trails of the majestic Blue Mountains. We’ve experienced a time in all of our
lives that no one could have predicted. Each of us has been uniquely impacted, but at last the finish line
is in sight.

All of you have trained for countless hours to get here. Many of you already had busy family and work
commitments before you started running early in the morning or late at night, and a lot of you had
your sights set on putting your training to the test back in 2020, only for your plans to be pushed back
an entire year. But, you have not let any of that stop you and that is a testament to your hard work and
dedication, and now it’s almost your big day.

With all that we’ve been through recently, the simple act of getting to race is an amazing thing.
Whether you’re running UTA11 or UTA100, let that thought motivate you up that big climb, or through
the early morning hours, and I have no doubt that you’ll be fine. You’ve managed to push through this
last year, stayed positive, and welcomed the challenge with open arms. After all, you did choose to be
a part of the epic family of runners seeking adventure in a stunning World Heritage Area!

The widespread support network that brings this event to life – from patient families, to persistent
coaches, to course markers, gear checkers, volunteers, checkpoint crews, and medics – will be with you
every step of the way. Everyone will feel the energy of what is about to take place, and everything will
have purpose once the racing begins.

This year when you’re out on the trails, no matter how hard you push, or how difficult it may become,
remember to look up, take a deep breath, let the cool mountain air fill your lungs, cheer on a fellow
runner, say thank you to our amazing volunteers, and make at least one new friend along the way. All
your hard work and dedication has brought you to this point, and these are the moments that will stay
with you forever.

I haven’t had the chance to meet many of you yet, but the excitement that you have in anticipation for
your race is the same excitement I have knowing that in a few weeks’ time I’ll finally get to see you all
in person. I want to thank Tom Landon-Smith for all of his help in getting us to this point, and for the
countless hours helping me understand the euphoria that surrounds this amazing event. It’s an honour
to be a part of the UTA family, and I look forward to welcoming you all across the finish line come race
day.

Enjoy your Ultra-Trail Australia.

items(s) to be replaced or they will not be allowed to continue on course even after the time
penalty has been served. For sever breaches of mandatory gear or failure to comply with the
requests of event marshals, the runner may be disqualified. Where it is not feasible to serve a time
penalty on course, the time penalty will be added to the runner’s overall race time.

OTHER RECOMMENDED ITEMS
• More substantial first aid kit
• Spare socks
• Sunscreen
• Cap or sun hat
• Body glide/body lubricant
• Spare headlight batteries

HIGH VISABILITY SAFETY VESTS
UTA100
The high visibility safety vest must be carried at ALL times. The vest must be worn as the outer most
layer and over the top of your running backpack at the following specific and places (your race
number must be visible on your front and over your vest):
1. At night along Megalong Valley Rd. This is the main dirt road from the 38.9km mark. You must
wear your vest from the 38.9km mark all the way to CP3.
2. At night once you get to the bitumen roads through Katoomba at the 55.5km mark. You need
to wear your vest along all the bitumen roads to access CP4 and continue to wear your vest
from CP4 to the crossing of Cliff Dr at about the 58.6km mark. You can remove your vest again
    after crossing Cliff Dr.
3. When entering Willoughby Rd or Sublime Point Rd (67.6km mark) from 4:45pm onwards. You
can remove your vest at the Fairmont Resort Water Point.
4. When entering Hordern Rd from Wentworth Falls walking tracks (75.3km mark) from 5pm
onwards. You can remove your vest once you reach the bush track at the end of Coronation Rd
but you still need to carry your vest to the finish.
5. Whenever an official requests you to wear your vest. This could include any time driver visibility
is poor such as in late afternoon/night or in fog during day or night. This will apply to travel on
any bitumen road or dirt fire trail.

UTA50
The high visibility safety vest must be carried by UTA50 runners only if it is deemed necessary. You
will only be required to carry the vest if there is heavy fog or a change in the course due to weather
conditions. A decision regarding this will be made at 4pm the day before the race and publicised at
the Friday Race Check-In, at the Race Briefing and via the event app and event Facebook Page. If
needed to be carried, the vest must then be worn as detailed in the Friday announcement or
whenever an event marshal requests you to wear your vest.

                                                                                                    19

written/visible with a name and race number, will placed at the end of the number range.

CHECKPOINT DROP BAGS (UTA100 ONLY)
There is a drop bag service for runners without a support crew. Runners may use a mixture of
support crew at some checkpoints and the drop bag service at other checkpoints. The drop bag
service should not be used for any checkpoints that your support crew will be in attendance. Drop
bags can be useful for extra food, gels, body lubricant, spare socks, clothing, batteries and spare
headlamp at the checkpoints and for warm, dry clothing and footwear at the finish. Checkpoint
drop bags will be taken to the following locations:
• Checkpoint 3 (Six Foot Track)
• Checkpoint 4 (Katoomba Aquatic Centre)
• Checkpoint 5 (Queen Victoria Hospital)

Checkpoint drop bags must be delivered to the checkpoint trucks at Race Check-In on Friday
evening between 10:00am – 7:00pm.

Your race number must be shown when delivering your drop bags. You must not leave checkpoint
drop bags prior to 10:00am Friday as they need to be placed directly into the correct checkpoint
trucks. It is the responsibility of the runner to ensure checkpoint drop bags are placed into the
correct checkpoint trucks on the Friday evening. All checkpoint drop bags must be in by 7:00pm.
Only the runner can collect their drop bag at the checkpoint locations by showing their race
number. Once each checkpoint drop bag is finished with it must be taken to the used drop bag area.

FINISH LINE DROP BAG
Runners may leave a finish drop bag in the drop bag marquee at KCC oval (near the start line) on
the morning of your race. Your race number must be shown to leave your finish drop bag at this
marquee. This bag should contain warm, dry clothing and footwear to change into at the finish. One
finish drop bag per runner is permitted.

It is the responsibility of runners to collect their finish drop bag from the drop bag marquee. Any
finish drop bags not collected by midday on the Sunday will be disposed of. Your race number
must be shown to collect your finish drop bag from the drop bag marquee.

                                                                                                      21

Medical Team. To withdraw at a checkpoint:

1. Notify the checkpoint staff that you are withdrawing from the event.
2. Complete and sign the checkpoint withdrawal form.

After you have withdrawn, your support crew may collect you from either Checkpoint 3, 4 or 5

RACE DAY INFORMATION

MEDICAL
Medical will be available at every checkpoint (UTA100 and UTA50), at the Fairmont Resort Water
Point, at the Emergency Aid Station and at the Finish Line. There will be roaming first aid vehicles on
the course for emergencies.

Each runner is responsible for their own wellbeing and basic first aid and should carry their own
blister pads/band-aids, body lubricant, sunscreen and strapping tape. Please be aware of the effects
of dehydration, hypothermia, and extreme fatigue. If you are not fit to continue please withdraw
from the race at the next checkpoint.

You should familiarise yourself with the correct use of a space blanket. If using a space blanket,
wrap it fully around your body. If you need to stop, seek shelter from the elements, put on all your
dry clothing and wrap the space blanket as tightly as possible around your whole body.

If you pass an injured runner, please stop to assist them, and follow the Participant Emergency
Instructions card. Record how long you stopped to assist and notify the staff at Event Information
tent and they will organise to adjust your time accordingly.

Runners are responsible for any costs incurred as a result of a medical incident, this includes but is
not limited to ambulance transfers, hospital stays, specialist treatment; it is therefore strongly
advised that all runners hold adequate personal insurance. Australian residents are recommended
to hold valid private health insurance (inclusive of ambulance cover) whilst international athletes
are strongly advised to have adequate travel or personal insurance that will provide coverage
for participation in an IRONMAN Group event. Runners are responsible for understanding the
terms and conditions of insurances held.

COURSE ROUTE – GENERAL INFORMATION
Indicators: All courses are marked with a combination of pink flagging tape with reflective strips
and red on white background arrows and crosses (A5 size).
Intersections: An arrow will indicate the direction to travel followed by two pieces of pink flagging
tape. This will continue for a short distance along the correct course. A cross will be within 20m
along any of the incorrect routes out of each intersection.
Along the course: Pink flagging tape will be displayed at least every 500m along the entire route
and distance signs every 5km.

It is the ultimate responsibility for each runner to know the course and follow the course map for a
general idea of where they are at all times. Refer to UTA100 Course, UTA50 Course, UTA22 Course,
UTA11 Course on the event website for maps, course descriptions, GPX files of the course.

COURSE SAFETY – GENERAL INFORMATION
This is a long event and contains walking tracks and fire roads. You will be travelling through remote
areas that are not easily accessible.

The temperature in mid May in the Blue Mountains can vary widely from below zero, snow and rain
to pleasant sunny days. The nights are always cold so expect a night maximum of 5 degrees Celsius.

The mandatory gear requirements are for your safety and are the bare minimum that you will need.
Please check forecasts and be prepared for all conditions. Consider carrying, or having accessible,
extra warm gear if the weather requires.

If you are injured or lost you may have to wait out in the open for up to several hours during the
night. Medical teams will reach any injured participants as soon as possible but depending on the
location this may take up to 2 hours. View page 25 for more information.

The walking tracks can be rough, uneven and slippery (especially in wet conditions). Please take
care, especially around the unguarded cliff edges. It is your responsibility to proceed with caution.

The walking tracks are not closed to other users. Be aware of tourists and other walkers on the
walking trails.

COURSE CONGESTION – GENERAL INFORMATION
Walking tracks: There is limited opportunity to pass on walking tracks. It is very important that you
let people pass especially if the next start group catches up to you.

In front of a long line of runners:
• If you hear someone yell out advising they'd like to pass, please move to the side where possible.
(This isn't them being rude, rather the only way they can advise).
• Yell back from time to time to ask if anyone wishes to pass.

This is a long and challenging race, which encourages camaraderie and respect between runners.
You will all battle the course and may struggle within yourselves, however we ask that you don't
battle fellow runners. We ask you each and everyone of you are respectful of each other and allow
others to pass when requested. The atmosphere of the event should always remain friendly.

                                                                                                   29

SPECTATORS

OVERVIEW
Ultra-Trail Australia is about more than just those lining up on the start line. Friends, family and
support crew are all integral to the magical atmosphere and vibe across all 4 days of the event. As a
result of capacity restrictions placed upon events by the NSW Government, spectators will need to
be kept to a minimum at Ultra-Trail Australia in 2021. Friends and family are asked to please
support and participate in all COVID Safe measures.

All runners will receive one spectator wristband which will provide a spectator of their choosing the
opportunity to attend
• Merchandise and Expo during the check-in times allocated to your race
• The start line of your race,
• The finish line during your race.

For race times please see the event schedule on page 8. Spectators and supporters under 16 years
will be exempt from this and can attend these spectator zones without a wristband. (Please note:
Those in UTA100 will need to specify whether you expect to finish on Saturday 15 May or Sunday
16 May as this will determine which band your spectator receives).

UTA100 runners will also receive two support crew wristbands which, along with your vehicle pass
will provide you with access to checkpoints CP3, CP4 & CP5.

At all locations, runners and spectators will need to check in to the Service NSW App. Please
download this before arriving at the event.

UTA100 SUPPORT CREW

Support crews for UTA100 runners are most welcome at the event. Support Crews add a
tremendous amount to the excitement of the event especially at the start and finish line.

To keep the event manageable as well as fair and safe for all athletes, and to make sure support
crews do not get lost, there is some information that support crews need to know.
• Two Support Crews per runner are only allowed at Checkpoints 3, 4 and 5 (driving directions to
each checkpoint are located on our website)
• Support Crew must wear the support crew wristband and use the support crew vehicle sticker
(supplied in the your race pack) to access parking and the checkpoint area.
• For safety reasons, support crews are not allowed at, or anywhere near the top of the Golden
Stairs, Checkpoint 1 or Checkpoint 2, even just to spectate.
• Support crews cannot drive, ride or walk on any section of Glenraphael Drive (the access road to
   Checkpoint 1).
• Support crews cannot drive, ride or walk along Megalong Valley Road South of the entrance to
   Checkpoint 3.
• Support crews cannot run alongside their runners at any point on the course outside of the aid
   stations.

RUNNER ONLY ZONES
The main sections of each checkpoint will be bunted off to separate support crew zones from the
main checkpoint areas. As runners arrive into Checkpoints 3, 4 and 5, they will be within a bunted
off area which contains the race food marquee and drop bag marquee. You are not permitted to
enter this area of the checkpoints. For the runner to meet you they will simply exit through a gap in
the bunting.

When they are finished being supported, they should re-enter the gap in the bunting and continue
on course. It is important for runners to re-enter the gap before they continue on course otherwise
they may miss crossing the timing mats at the exit of Checkpoints 3, 4 and 5. You must not enter
any runner only designated areas at these Checkpoints.

SUPPORT CREW EVENT RULES
