From the Principal – Jennifer Skeahan Every Student – Whatever it takes! Curriculum - Pedagogy – Relationships WEEK 3 We have started the Term strong and wrapped up the week with a wonderful celebration for Book Week and Under 8s day. It is unfortunate that we are still not able to have parents and additional family members join us on assemblies and on the school site. The reason we cannot invite everyone in is because we would not be able to monitor the number of people on the school site and also not be able to control social distancing measures. As we are all aware there are still restrictions to numbers of people socialising in public and therefore this sadly keeps our gates closed. We will of course take lots of photos and for everyone with consent to be photographed we will be sharing these photos through our newsletters, website and FaceBook site. 2021 PREP ENROLMENTS If you have a 2021 Prep student, please contact the School and request an enrolment pack! Prep Readiness Program Our plans for our Prep Readiness Program are quite different this year. We will be inviting parents and carers to contact and register their interest in attending sessions. Unfortunately we will only be able to have one parent/carer per 2021 Prep child. We will be limited to 20 parents per session. Once a session is filled we will open another session to register for attendance and this will continue until we have accommodated all incoming parents/carers and their children. The sessions will all run at different times so as not to have too many adults on the school site at any one time. Thank you for your understanding. Our Positive Behaviour for Learning approach to education ensures that we are always focused on a safe and supportive classroom environment. All students At School Every Day. We are excited to celebrate World Teachers’ Day with all our teachers on Friday, however it will be business as usual with no disruption to learning. Thank you everyone for your continued support of our great School. Jennifer Skeahan Deputy Principal – Ms Alexis Bell Book Week 2020 Congratulations to our Book Week 2020 award winners! We had a fantastic Book Week parade, although we did miss our usual audience of families. A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who put together the amazing array of costumes that were on display! Your efforts are very much appreciated. Page 2
Under 8s Day The Prep to Year 3 students not only got to participate in the Book Week parade, but additionally spent the middle session of the day participating in Under 8s Day activities. This day ran a little differently to previous years. As we didn’t have our parents and carers present to move through the activities with the students, classes participated together in rotational activities. They joined in with creating bubble wands and using these to make bubbles, playing Rob-the-Nest, a dance activity, creating paper kites, watercolour painting and an obstacle course. A lot of fun was had by all, and there were certainly some tired faces at the end of the day. Page 4
Prep 2021 Enrolments Interviews for Prep 2021 are underway. It is important to enrol early so we can consider how to best place your student in their Prep class. If you have a child who is 4 years old, or who has turned 5 since the beginning of July, or know somebody who does, please call the school on 3386 5333 to organise collection of an enrolment pack. This website has a calculator to help you find out if your child is eligible to start Prep in 2021. If you do not have a birth certificate for your child, please follow this link to find out how to apply for one. Prep Readiness Please call the school to book into a Prep Readiness session. These sessions have limited numbers of students, so bookings are essential. Our first group has is already full and the second is filling quickly. Prep Readiness runs for four weeks from the 13th November and is a great opportunity for your child to meet their new Prep friends and get to know the school setting. Book Now for Prep Readiness Deputy Principal – Mrs Stacey Wood Dig Deep By this time in Term 4, the final assessment items for the year are commencing. These assessment tasks are a tool that provide feedback about the learning that has occurred for every student. It is important that students dig deep and try their best in all forms of assessment, as this information allows us to target our teaching and learning moving forward. Keep up the great work! Year 3 Swimming Lessons The Year 3 team is very excited about their upcoming swimming lessons this term! Please ensure permission letters are returned as soon as possible so that your child does not miss out. If you have not yet received these details, please contact your child’s class teacher. Page 5

Head of Curriculum – Danielle Finlay Reading Comprehension Focus: Predicting This fortnight our school-wide reading focus is Predicting. What is predicting? A prediction is a statement or informed guess about what might happen in a text. In order to predict, readers are encouraged to use clues from a text such as the genre, title, illustrations and blurb. Predicting encourages active engagement in the reading process and can support the development of reading comprehension. Key questions to support predictions: Before reading: What might this text/story be about? Who might the characters be? What do you think might happen in this text/story? During reading: What do you think might happen next? How might the character respond to the problem? How could the problem be resolved? After / during reading: Were your predictions correct? What information did you use to help form your predictions? Term 4 English Focus This term in English… Our Prep students have been reading and exploring letters from a mystery character. Once the mystery Prep character is unveiled, students will write their own letter to the character. Our Year 1 students have been reading and listening to the story, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. Students Year 1 will create a multimodal procedure that explains how to make a disgusting sandwich. Our Year 2 students have been reading and listening to the story, Alexander’s Outing and The Spirit of Year 2 Hope. Students will create a multimodal narrative which includes an imaginative new event to solve a problem. Our Year 3 students have been reading and listening to a variety of poems. Students will examine the Year 3 author’s word choices and text structure used in the poem. They will apply their learning to write a descriptive poem focused on the three senses of sight, hearing and touch. Our Year 4 students have been examining persuasive techniques used in food packaging. Students will Year 4 identify, interpret and explain the effect of persuasive devices, language features and visual features used in the design of a cereal box. Our Year 5 students have been reading and listening to a variety of poems and songs. Students will Year 5 examine and deconstruct poems, write a poetry analysis that explains the author’s word choices and text structure of a poem. They will then transform the events of the poem into a multimodal narrative. Our Year 6 students have been reading and listening to literary and informative texts based on the same Year 6 topic. Students are investigating which genre of text delivers a more powerful message. They will write a written argument comparing a literary and informative text and participate in a class debate.
