We are pleased to provide you with this 2021 Orange Village Recycle calendar filled with recycling tips and opportunities. Orange Village received a grant from the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste district for the printing of this informative calendar. Recycling has certainly changed over the years. We began by recycling paper and cardboard at dropoff bins. We progressed to blue bags and small containers for certain items. Currently we are able to commingle all the recycled items in 64 gallon recycle containers. Items that you are able to place in the container is constantly changing. This calendar provides a great deal of information including what items can be recycled in your container and what items can no longer be placed in your recycle container. Please note that all information stated in the calendar was correct at the time of printing and may be subject to change. We will keep you updated on new information via our electronic newsletter. Please take the time to review this information. As always, I continue to encourage all residents to recycle as much as possible, not only in your recycle container but also with composting bins, grasscycling and the repurposing of items. We also offer a metal recycle container at Orange Village Service Department by the salt shed for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The container is marked with a sign under the overhang. It is for “Metals only” - no other trash or products. This program allows us to reduce landfill costs and save the environment. In 2019, Orange Village residents diverted over 342 tons of recyclable materials from the landfill. This effort saved the Village over $14,500. I would like to thank all of the residents for increasing your recycling efforts. Everyone reaps the long-term benefits of recycling. Please visit our informative website, www.orangevillage.com, to sign up for our bi-monthly electronic newsletter (Enews), CodeRed for emergency and/or general notifications, access meeting minutes, video recordings of Council meetings, changes to items that can be recycled and view monthly Tax Administrator and Treasurer reports. This is an indication of only a few of the many items that can be found on our website. We urge you to stay informed of all the wonderful happenings in Orange Village throughout the year. Thank you for your efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle our planet’s resources. Sincerely, Kathy U. Mulcahy Mayor Medicine Disposal - Rx Drug Drop Box Program Orange Village Police Department and Cuyahoga County joined forces to protect your home and the environment from potentially dangerous medications with the Rx Drug Drop Box Program. Law enforcement is the only entity legally able to accept these medications and process them properly so that they do not fall into the wrong hands. Law enforcement takes control of and destroys drugs on a regular basis as part of their ongoing operations. The Rx Drug Drop Box Program is an opportunity for residents to deposit unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs. You may drop off your items Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Orange Village Police Department, 4600 Lander Road. Needles and liquids cannot be accepted.

Order your Leaf Humus Beginning March 1st ORDER How it works: YOUR LEAF HUMUS Leaf Humus is delivered to your home free of charge. Requests are honored in the order of receipt, while supplies last. We will deliver one load to each person who places a request. If you request more than one load, you will receive the additional loads once everyone has received their first load. When you place an order, we will ask you to describe where to place the delivery as if you were standing at the street looking down your drive toward your home. You can place your order on our website at www.orangevillage.com or by contacting Orange Village at 440-498-4400. WHAT IS A MATERIALS RECOVERY FACILITY? A Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is a large sorting facility with many conveyor belts and machinery. Here, recycling trucks are weighed before tipping their loads on the building floor. Mixed recyclables are then scooped up by a front-end loader and placed on the sorting line. Large objects and contamination are removed first. The recyclables then travel through an automated sorting system which uses a disk screen, magnets, optical sorters and workers on the line to separate the materials. The sorted materials are baled and sold to manufacturers who make them into a variety of new products. For instance, your cereal boxes may become a game board or paper towels. Your aluminum cans may become new soda cans or airplane parts. Glass bottles may become kitchen tiles and your soup cans may become new bikes or even a bridge. The cycle is endless. Tour your MRF Kimble Companies may offer Orange Village residents an opportunity to tour their material recovery facility (MRF) in Twinsburg. During the tour, Kimble will provide a presentation on the operation of the facility, a tour of the facility and time for questions or comments. At the time of printing this calendar, all tours were suspended due to the coronavirus but we hope this will change in 2021. More information will be posted on our website, included in our electronic newsletter (enews), CodeRed notifications and on our Facebook (Orange Village Ohio) page. Please make sure to visit our website, www. orangevillage.com to sign up the enews and CodeRed notifications. Spring Forward - Daylight Savings Time Begins A friendly reminder to turn your clocks forward one hour. Daylight savings time officially begins at 2:00 a.m., Sunday March 14th. Acceptable home computer equipment includes CPU’s, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, terminals, modems, cables, software, and ink printer cartridges. Cell phones and their accessories are also accepted. What will happen to the computers that are collected? RET3 job corp. has partnered with OneCommunity, another local not-for-profit broadband provider that works to give students technology skills for the workplace and, in turn, drive economic development in the region. What will happen to the data on my computer? All computer hard drives received by RET3 are erased of all data using U.S. Department of Defense specifications. This secure system eradicates all the information stored on your computer and protects your confidentiality. After the hard drive is cleaned, usable computer systems are remanufactured. Unrepairable equipment is completely deconstructed. If your donation does not meet school specifications, RET3 Job Corp. will recycle the equipment in a process that is fully compliant with EPA standards and offers a 100% no- landfill guarantee.

When you recycle, your used items get a new life. Some materials can travel through the recycling process and be back on store shelves in as little as 30 days! Your aluminum cans, cartons, paper, plastic water bottles and cereal boxes can become many different things. Additionally, recycling conserves land and natural resources. When you recycle, you keep materials out of landfills where they do not decompose. Instead, you are sending them to a recycling facility to be turned into something useful. Products made with recyclable material use fewer natural resources and energy, making recycling a sustainable activity that also supports local jobs. Recycling is good for the Earth and the people who live here now and in the future! The biggest threat to the entire recycling program is a contaminated recycling stream (non-recyclables mixed in with recyclables).

While mercury is a useful element with many applications, it can pose a threat to human health and the environment if thrown in the trash or flushed down a sink. All fluorescent bulbs should be recycled properly to protect public health and the environment. The Home Depot® and Lowe’s Home Improvement offer free in-store recycling of consumer compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, rechargeable batteries, and plastic bags in their stores. Fluorescent tubes can be recycled at Batteries Plus Bulbs stores, for a nominal fee. Currently the fee is $.60 for tubes less than 4 feet and $1.20 for 4 foot to 8 foot tubes. This is a small price to pay to save the planet.

Recycling Plastics and What About Those Numbers? It used to be that we looked for a number surrounded by a recycling symbol to determine if a plastic container was recyclable but that is not the case. The numbers on plastic containers are resin codes used by the plastics industry to identify the type of chemicals used to make the container. The codes do not always mean that the item is recyclable, so we no longer look at the numbers on plastics to determine if it goes in curbside recycling. The shape of the container determines if it belongs in curbside recycling. Only recycle items shaped like bottles and jugs. If it has a neck or an opening more narrow than the body, it can be placed in recycling.
