Message from the Chair Ben Clyburn, M.D.
The Department of Medicine presents the 2022 Virtual Awards
Ceremony which recognizes our exceptional faculty, trainees,
administrative leadership, and staff for their outstanding achievements
in education, patient care, and research during the past year. I
always look forward to this particular event as it is an exciting time to
acknowledge well-deserving individuals within our department and to
bring visibility to their distinguished work.
This year, we will be presenting awards to recognize excellence in
research and scholarly activity, in addition to our traditional awards
honoring outstanding achievements in patient care and education.
We will also be presenting our Employee of the Year and Medicine
Excellence Awards at the ceremony.
On behalf of the department, please accept my congratulations and
warmest gratitude to the recipients of this year’s awards. I would also
like to extend a special thanks to the members of the Education and
Medicine Administration team for their diligent efforts to make this
celebration possible.

The Department of Medicine Employee of the Quarter program was established to showcase
employees who have shown exemplary strides in contributing to the Department of Medicine and
to the MUSC community.
Nominees consistently demonstrate exceptional service, commitment to job excellence, innovation and
initiative, and go above and beyond the call of duty. At the end of the year, an Employee of the Year
winner and a Medicine Excellence Winner (runner-up) are selected from the pool of quarterly winners.

Triple Threat Award: Awarded to a DOM resident who best integrates excellence in clinical work, education, and
"scholarly activity" into their practice. Selected by Education Planning Committee.
Doctor’s Doctor Award: Awarded to a DOM resident who you would choose to take care of you or your family.
Selected by residents.
Professionalism Award: Awarded to DOM residents who demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional
responsibilities while adhering to ethical principles and maintaining a sensitivity to the diverse patient populations
that they serve. Characteristics such as respect, altruism, integrity, honesty, compassion, and empathy should be
evident in all interactions, including with peers, supervisors, students, patients, and their families. Nominated by
residents and faculty.
Intern of the Year: Awarded to a Department of Medicine intern in recognition of the individual’s professional
excellence displayed in the provision of compassionate patient care and the promotion of teamwork among
colleagues. Selected by residents.
Resident of the Year: Awarded to a Department of Medicine resident in recognition of the individual’s professional
excellence displayed in the provision of compassionate patient care and the promotion of teamwork among
colleagues. Selected by residents.
FACULTY AND TRAINEE AWARDS
Community Service Award: Awarded to a DOM resident, trainee, or faculty member who take action to create
change in their communities. Nominated by Division Directors.

Employee of the Year: The Department of Medicine's Employee of the Quarter program showcases employees
who have shown exemplary strides in contributing to the Department of Medicine and to the MUSC community. At
the end of the year, an Employee of the Year winner and Medicine Excellence Winner (runner-up) are selected from
the pool of quarterly winners. Selected by the Employee of the Year Review Committee.
