Forage stand How to establish a Productive Forage Stand The establishment phase is the critical first step in a productive and healthy forage stand. To maximize your success, follow the agronomic guidelines below. Time of seeding Quality seed and seed treatments Early spring (Including Frost Seeding) and early fall (before Certified seed ensures varietal purity, high-germination and freeze-up) are suitable times for seeding your forage stand. weed-free seed. Certified seed results in rapid establishment and reduced weed problems in the future forage crop, as well as - Spring seeding provides the best chance for adequate moisture subsequent crops. Consider a seed coating to improve flowability levels for germination. and seedling health. All legumes should be inoculated to ensure proper nitrogen fixation. - Early Spring, or late winter frost seeding, the freeze/thaw patterns help to work the seed in to the soil. Fertility - Fall seeding provides less weed competition. Soil test and fertilize accordingly. Remember that the most cost-effective time to fertilize a forage crop is usually at seeding. Seedbed preparation Consider the use of higher rates of phosphorus or elemental A firm seedbed is needed for good forage establishment. This sulphur to provide a stable nutrition base for the following years. results in proper seed-to-soil contact, adds control to seeding Fifteen pounds per acre of P2O5 can be safely seed placed. Higher depth, and reduces surface drying. Walking on a firm seedbed rates must be banded away from the seed row to avoid seedling should not leave a footprint deeper than ¼ inch. damage. Weed control Weed control is important for good forage establishment. A seedbed free of perennial weeds is especially important. Control weeds prior to seeding, as well as during the year of establishment, if possible. Forage stand How to establish a Productive Forage Stand (cont’d) Seeding depth Cover crops Proper depth of seeding cannot be stressed enough. Many forage Although not recommended, some producers choose to plant stand establishment failures are due to seeding too deep. All forages with cover crops such as barley or oats. Cover (or forage species should be seeded no deeper than ½ inch. Most companion) crops compete with the new forage seedlings for forage seeds will do well planted at about ¼ inch or less. Always sunlight, nutrients and moisture. A cover crop can cause reduced err on seeding shallow rather than deep. seedling establishment and forage yield and also reduce stand longevity. The benefits of using cover crops include reduction of Seeding rates wind and water erosion and reduction of weed infiltration. If using Use proper seeding rates based on target plants per square a cover crop, the following tips will reduce the competition and foot. Seeding rates depend on species, seed size, seed quality, aid in forage stand establishment. seeding method, row spacing and annual precipitation. Because most forage seeds are small, light and often chaffy, it can be useful to mix the seed with cracked grain, cover crop seed, or use coated seed to improve seed flow. Tips for using cover crops Tip #1 Tip #5 Seed the cover crop at ⅓ to ½ of normal seeding rate. If harvesting the cover crop for grain (not recommended), remove all straw from the field. If that is not an option, chop and spread Tip #2 the straw thoroughly across the field. If straw is left in a windrow, Seed forage seed in a separate pass at an angle to your cover crop it will smother the forage seedlings underneath. to reduce competition and to aid in depth control. Tip #6 Tip #3 If seeding forages where soil erosion is prominent, it is Increase forage seeding rate to achieve desired plant densities in recommended that a cover crop be used. The companion the stand as the cover crop will reduce forage seed establishment. crop will aid in covering and protecting the soil during the establishment year. Tip #4 Remove the cover crop as early as possible (silage or greenfed) rather than harvesting the grain. This will reduce the amount of competition for sunlight, moisture and nutrients. 9

This update conforms to the UPOV 1991 convention, bringing Canada in line with the rest of the world and opening the door for increased investment to make new varieties available to Canadian farmers. Changes to the PBR Act create opportunity. But they also bring new obligations for the value chain. www.PBRfacts.ca 27

Winter cereals 2021 UGRC RING Cultivar description Height 95 cm Soft Red Winter Wheat Barbs Long • Exceptional yield Test WEIGHT 78 kg/hl • Very good winter survival 1,000 K 40 g • Very good standability Maturity Early-Intermediate UGRC Ring is a winter wheat that has very high potential yield. It excels in all regions of Eastern Canada. It’s standability Seeding Rate is excellent. It distinguishes itself under intensive management Early 1.4 Million seeds/acre 130 lbs/acre when fungicide is applied along with adequate nitrogen Optimal 1.6 Million seeds/acre 140 lbs/acre fertilizer. Late 1.8 Million seeds/acre 150 lbs/acre KWS DANIELLO Seeding Rate (TKW 33 g) KWS Daniello hybrid fall rye is seeded based Hybrid Fall Rye on viable seeds per acre • Excellent yield Seeding Rate 800,000 seeds/acre 1.6 units/acre • Very good winter hardiness The bags contain 500K viable grains which weigh about 50 lbs. • Very good standability • Not very susceptible to ergot KWS Daniello hybrid fall rye can be grown for grain, forage or biomass. It has a very high potential with an expected yield increase of 20-25% over tha of conventional fall rye. The yields from our trials were very high, around 8 to 9 tonnes/ha. It is shorter than Gauthier fall rye and has excellent standability. In addition, KWS Daniello fall rye is much more resistant to ergot than conventional ryes. A well-prepared seed bed and even germination will provide good resistance to ergot. It also has a higher falling number than the average for fall ryes. KWS PROPOWER Seeding Rate (TKW 33 g) KWS Propower hybrid fall rye is seeded based Specifically for silage on viable seeds per acre KWS Propower is a hybrid winter rye specifically for silage. It allows an Seeding Rate 800,000 seeds/acre 1.6 units/acre early, high quality harvest and seeding of a second crop. Makes it easy The bags contain 500K viable grains which weigh about 50 lbs. to increase forage acreage on the farm and is resistant to drought. 29
