Special Designation Students receiving red, white and blue cords are recognized as veterans. These cords were provided by the non-profit veteran organization, Honoring/ Hiring/Helping our Heroes of Pinal County. We proudly salute these men and women and send them off from Central Arizona College with the knowledge that they will undoubtedly continue to achieve both personal and professional success. Students receiving gold cords are members of the Honors Program, a program for academically exceptional students, offers intellectual opportunities beyond those found in the normal curriculum. Students receiving gold medallions are Honors Program graduates who have completed the year-long Colloquium project and three seminar projects in academic transfer courses taken for honors credit. Students receiving gold stoles are members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Students receiving red cords are members of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS). TRIO SSS students participate in a comprehensive program that provides mentoring and academic support. Success of students in the program is attributed to their personal resiliency and vital connections made with our faculty members and staff. Students receiving black/platinum cords are members of the National Society of Leadership & Success Program. Their mission is to build leaders who make a better world. Students receiving silver stoles are members of the Student Government Association. Silver symbolizes the knowledge each student has gained throughout their years of service at CAC. The stole itself represents a high level of dedication and commitment to the greater good of the student body. Each member of the Student Government Association has worked to advocate for all CAC students and have helped to sponsor a variety of programs and activities. 5

Academic Regalia The “cap and gown” graduation attire comes to us from medieval Europe, where they were commonly worn by faculty and students. These robes or gowns are more typical of attire from the time and may have originally provided warmth in unheated buildings. By the 14th century, some universities required faculty to wear academic robes in public places as well as at their university or college. In the late 19th century, American universities formed a commission that prepared a code for academic costumes. That code has been updated and today consists of a gown, cap and hood that indicate the degree, and the college or university that awarded that degree. Undergraduate cap and gowns: Our CAC graduates wear gowns with pointed sleeves. While these are sometimes simply black, they may also be in one of the university or college’s colors. Most undergraduates wear a cap that is also known as a “mortarboard”. Masters’ degree cap and gowns: Gowns for a Master’s degree are typically black and have longer oblong sleeves that hang below the wrist. Master’s degree regalia includes a hood draped over the shoulders, and usually a mortarboard cap. Doctor’s degree cap and gowns: Gowns for a Doctor’s degree are very full, with large, full sleeves and a front trimmed in velvet, with three velvet bars on the sleeves. Doctor’s degree regalia also includes a hood, and more recently many include soft velvet caps instead of a mortarboard. 7
Faculty “Mace” The Faculty Senate President, who leads the procession, carries a large wooden staff, based on a mace, a medieval weapon that symbolized authority of the king to award titles. While the mace was once a weapon used to establish authority of the physically strong, it has been transformed to a symbol of intellectual authority and a reminder of the civilizing power of teaching and learning. It is now representative of the right of the College and the State to grant degrees. Our Central Arizona College mace was made by Mr. Casey Newman, woodworking instructor at our Aravaipa Campus. It is made of walnut, with an engraved brass emblem of the college, and wrapped with copper to symbolize the significance of copper mining in Pinal County and Arizona. 8
Faculty of the Year Awards Central Arizona College faculty hold doctoral and other advanced degrees, and possess infinitely varied combinations of real-world experience which contribute to their ability to provide an outstanding learning experience to students at Central Arizona College. CAC is a “learning college” and inasmuch our faculty are, at their very core, dedicated to student success. While their teaching methods may vary, all faculty members at Central Arizona College hold true to the mission of our institution. Each year students are invited to nominate outstanding faculty who have made a difference in the lives of students inside and outside the classroom. The selected faculty should be a role model for students who not only demonstrates excellence in instruction, but also leadership and a passion for helping students learn. The Faculty of the Year recipient will receive a commemorative plaque marking their receipt of this prestigious honor. 2021 Faculty of the Year awarded to Wendy Britt Professor of Nursing 9
George Fridell Awards Each year Central Arizona College honors its outstanding educators with the George Fridell Excellence in Teaching Awards. Unless you are part of the Central Arizona College community or had the opportunity to partake in one of his classes, the name George Fridell becomes just another adjective describing another plaque among tens of thousands given out across this country every year. However, it is as a result of his common sense and high standards that CAC’s Faculty Award evolved into the George Fridell Excellence in Teaching Awards. 1. Joseph Faykosh, Ph.D. Professor of History, Superstition Mountain Campus 2. Fotini Sioris, M.S. Professor of Biology, Signal Peak Campus 3. Skyla Teel, M.Ed. Professor of Reading, Signal Peak Campus 10
