1 Welcome Welcome to the 2020 Scottish Rowing Indoor Championships! While the events of this year have prevented us from gathering together in our usual home in Lanarkshire, we have taken the competition on-line and feel fortunate to be joined by competitors around the world. We have found new friends in Wales, England, Ireland, Europe, North America, Tahiti, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere. It has been such a pleasant surprise to see people all over the world get involved. For the first time we have partnered with Welsh Rowing to bring you the Welsh Rowing Virtual Championships as part of the Championships, and we have continued our partnership with Scottish Student Sport to bring you the SSS Indoor Rowing Championships. We have recruited some of the best indoor rowing commentators from across the United Kingdom to bring the event alive for our YouTube livestream. We will also be hearing from you, our competitors, with live interviews before and after racing. Our team will be on our social media channels from the lead up to the day and during the racing itself, so tag us (@scottishrowing) in your posts to get featured: #ScottishIndoors. Please read through this Competitor Handbook so you know how the day will run. Should you need to contact us, you can do so at www.scottishrowingindoors.com/contact - we are happy to help and will answer any questions you have before the event or on the day. Once again, thank you for the support you have shown us so far by entering, we hope so much that we can deliver an exciting event for you. Good luck in your races! 2 Club Entered Competitors – Disclaimer and Commentary Info Competitors who were entered through their clubs (not through active.com) must complete a disclaimer form before you can race. Competitors who entered online have already signed these disclaimers. 3 Draw The provisional draw is available here. Please check this carefully and submit any problems through our contact form on or before Wednesday 18th November. 4 What You Need The Scottish Rowing Indoor Championships offers racing opportunities for competitors using a Concept 2 Indoor Rower, Bike Erg and Ski Erg. Each of these machines is fitted with a performance monitor and in addition, competitors will need: 1. A USB-A to USB-B cable to connect the Concept2 performance monitor to a compatible computer. 2. A computer running one of the following operating systems: 1|Page

Any adaptive modifications to equipment needed to take part. 6. Your mobile phone 5 Updating Your Software It is vital that your Concept2 performance monitor and computer software is updated BEFORE the race day. To do this you need to complete the following steps: 1. Check the version of browser you are using. You must have one of the following browsers installed: • Google Chrome version 78 or higher • Microsoft Edge version 79 or higher If you need to update your browser, please restart your computer before moving to the next step. 2. Update the Firmware on your Concept2 Erg Screen (PM monitor) • Go to https://www.concept2.co.uk/service/software/concept2-utility and download the Windows or Mac version of the utility tool. • Once the Utility tool has finished downloading, open it and follow the instructions to install it on your computer (you may need to restart your computer to compete the install). • Connect your PM3, PM4 or PM5 monitor to your computer using a USB A-B or USB B-C cable • Now launch the Concept2 Utility tool. The tool will automatically check your firmware version and tell you if you need to update it. • If you need to update your firmware, simply follow the on-screen instructions which will appear on your computer. 3. Test your connection – You will be sent your Competitor Secret code before your race. You do not need this to do the test. • Go to https://master.regatta-systems.com/homerace and click Connect to Ergometer. • Click on the name of your ergometer in the pop-up window and click Connect. • You should see a summary of your connection status. 2|Page
If you have trouble completing any of these steps please go to https://www.concept2.co.uk/service/software/concept2-utility/troubleshooting for more help. 6 How to get in touch The best way to reach us before or during the event is through our website: www.scottishrowingindoors.com/contact Please submit your enquiry and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. 7 Live Broadcast The live broadcast will be available on our YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/scottishrowing, so please share this link if you have friends and family who want to support you. The broadcast will be recorded and the recording will be available via the YouTube channel early in week commencing 24th November 2020. The broadcast will have a delay of up to 30 seconds compared to live racing, so we do not recommend that you use this to follow your own race. Information on your competitors’ progress during the race will be displayed on your performance monitor. 8 Social Media Follow us on social media and tag us in your posts: www.facebook.com/scottishrowing www.twitter.com/scottishrowing www.instagram.com/scottishrowing #ScottishIndoors 9 Merchandise We have a number of items available for competitors to purchase. Urgent safeguarding enquiries can be made by phone to +44(0)7852 947 907. 11 Lightweight Weigh In All lightweight competitors must be aged 18 or over. Lightweight men shall not weigh more than 75kg. Lightweight women shall not weigh more than 61.5kg. Lightweight competitors will be required to submit evidence of their weight from 2 hours before the start of the racing day (i.e. from 07:00 on 21/11/20) until 60 minutes before the scheduled start time of their race. Any weigh-in evidence submitted after this time cut-off will not be accepted. Competitors shall submit a photograph of themselves on the scales in racing clothing, with their weight visible alongside evidence of the current date (for example, a phone/tablet/laptop screen with the current date & time or that day’s newspaper). Weigh-in evidence should be submitted at www.scottishrowingindoors.com/lightweight Lightweight competitors who do not meet the weight criteria above, or are unable to confirm their weight within the time period specified, will still be able to race at their scheduled time and receive a result, but they will not be ranked and will not be eligible to win any medal. 12 Team events All team members will row at the same time for the specified time period for the event. The average distance covered from the results of all four teammates will be calculated in real time to give a team result over the specified time period. 13 Racing The following information contains language specific to Concept2 Indoor Rowers. Concept 2 Bike and Ski Ergs operate in a similar way. 13.1 Before Your Race • Lightweight competitors shall weigh-in from 2 hours before the start of the racing day (i.e. from 07:00 on 21/11/20) until 60 minutes before the scheduled start time of their race. See Lightweight Weigh In (above) for details. • Ensure that you are thoroughly warmed up before your race and have read the medical guidance (below) prior to participating in this event. 4|Page
• Once connected to the race system, information will be communicated to you via your performance monitor and computer screen. Occasionally, we may need to contact you via telephone (for example, to re-arrange a delayed race). Please ensure that you can be contacted on the telephone number that you provided on registration during the race day. If you need to advise us of a change of telephone number, please visit www.scottishrowingindoors.com/contact 13.2 Getting Ready • You will have a code for each race – this will have been emailed to you before the race and is called your ‘participant secret’. Each link is unique to you and to the event in which you are racing. There will be separate links if you are competing in multiple events. These links will take you into the Race Lobby. • Go to www.homerace.nl and follow the instructions to connect. You can also access the Homerace manual for a detailed set of instructions. • You may use the drag factor of your choice; the monitor will display the drag factor during the warm-up period. You can adjust the drag factor at any time up until the start of the race, but not during the race. • Please connect to the Race Lobby 30 minutes prior to your race start. . • If you have not entered the Race Lobby 10 minutes prior to the start of your race and secured a stable connection, you may be excluded from the race. If you are sharing equipment which is being used by another competitor shortly before your race, please inform us at www.scottishrowingindoors.com/contact - this will allow us to make arrangements for a ‘late arrival’ into the Race Lobby. • 2 minutes prior to race start, you must be connected and ready to race. • 1 minute prior to race start, please stop rowing, put your handle down and watch your monitor for race start instructions. • Whilst in the Race Lobby you may continue to warm up until you are directed to stop through a message that will appear on your computer screen and performance monitor. During this time, your performance monitor may change its display a number of times; this is normal, and you do not need to do anything whilst this is happening. • A Race Marshal will monitor the race lobby for each event, and any updates and messages from them will appear on the Race Lobby screen of your computer – they may be important so ensure you monitor the race lobby in advance of the race start. • If you miss your race, you may be able to compete in a time-only event later in the schedule. Please contact us immediately using the contact form if you wish to be considered for this. We will try to accommodate requests, but time-only races will only be offered if space is available in an event and it does not alter the published race schedule. In this case, you will receive a result but not a ranking, and will not be eligible to win a medal. 13.3 The Start Sequence • At the end of the warm-up period, your display will read: “Stop, prepare for start” 5|Page
You should stop warming up and wait for the start. The race cannot start until all the machines have been still for several seconds. • The start sequence (page 7) will be displayed on your screen. 13.4 During Your Race • See page 8 for what to expect on your monitor during the race. • If your erg becomes disconnected, the display may become out-of-date and stop displaying some information. It may show the words “Keep Rowing”. You should keep rowing and finish your race. • If you experience any problems during the race, you should get in touch with us as soon as possible. You have up to 30 minutes to raise any problems with us after the end of your race. • If you experience technical issues during your race, please continue your race until you have completed the time or distance. If the connection is restored during this time, the race system will be able to read your back up file and extrapolate your score. If the connection is not restored, your monitor will still contain your score which can be manually added after the race. If this happens, contact us as soon as your race is over. 13.5 After Your Race • Make sure you cool down properly. • Check the results online at www.scottishrowingindoors.com/results. Results will be provisional for at least 30 minutes after the race. • Medal winners will be displayed on the live broadcast between races once results have been verified. • Once the race has finished, the Race Marshal will approve the race at which point the race system will disconnect your monitor. You do not need to do anything whilst this is happening, but please do not disconnect your monitor from your computer until the rowing machine monitor has returned to the normal view. 6|Page

14 Appeals During your race, if you experience any problems (such as a disconnection) and wish to dispute or protest a race and result: you should contact us no later than 30 minutes after the end of your race. The Race Review Panel will investigate your situation, review the race data, and confer with the Race Marshal that has observed your race. The outcome of the Race Review Panel is final and will be communicated to you by email. Similarly, if you wish to raise concerns about the result of any other race, you may do so until 30 minutes after the end of that race. 15 Results Results will be available online at www.scottishrowingindoors.com/results They will also be shared on our social media channels throughout the day. 16 Medals & Winners Scottish Rowing Indoor Championships (SRIC) gold medals will be awarded in every event. Silver SRIC medals will be awarded in events with five or more competitors and bronze medals awarded in events with eight or more competitors. For awarding medals, the number of competitors is counted as that present on the final issued draw. The Championships include Welsh Rowing Virtual Championships events which will award separate medals. Eligible competitors are marked with (W). The Championships include Scottish Student Sport events which will award separate medals. Eligible competitors are marked with (SSS). Competitors in SSS and WRVC events are also eligible for Scottish Rowing Indoor Championships medals. The winning time in your race may not be the fastest time of your event (for example, if there are multiple waves or if a competitor disconnects and completes their race offline). You should always race for the fastest time. 17 Records 17.1 Concept2 Records Concept2 records can be set at this event – except for lightweight records due to the inability to verify weigh-in procedures appropriately. To submit a Concept2 record you will need to provide a video of your row. This video needs to be a single take that includes a close-up of the monitor before the start, a clear view of the athlete and erg throughout the race, and a close-up of the monitor after the finish. 9|Page
Competitors who believe they have broken a Concept2 record should contact us and we will be able to provide you the details of how to verify your record. 17.2 Scottish Indoor Records The Scottish Rowing Indoor Championships records archive can be found on our website. We will automatically update Scottish Indoor Records and there is no video requirement, but we may ask for proof of identity/age. 17.3 Welsh Rowing Virtual Championships Records The Welsh Rowing Virtual Championships are being organised by Welsh Rowing and are wholly separate from the Welsh Indoor Rowing Championships (https://www.wirc.wales) held annually at Cardiff Rowing Centre that many competitors will be familiar with. Any times set at the Welsh Rowing Virtual Championships will not be records for the Welsh Indoor Rowing Championships, as the record rules state the time must be set at the Welsh Indoor Rowing Championships only. Fastest times set at the WRVC are automatically eligible to become WRVC records. Proof of identity/age may be requested before records are certified. 18 Medical Information As a competitor you are competing in this event entirely at your own risk. Scottish Rowing takes no responsibility, and shall not be liable, for damages or injuries caused during or after taking part in the event. We strongly recommend that you do not compete alone. You must inform someone of where and when you are competing and arrange to check in with them at an agreed finish time of your race. Junior athletes competing must be supervised by a parent, legal guardian or appointed responsible adult. The parent, legal guardian or appointed responsible adult accepts full responsibility for the competitor’s safety and welfare. Please assess your health and fitness before competing in this event. You should have practiced your race distance prior to the day of the event. If you are new to exercise, you should consult your doctor prior to taking part in the event. If you feel unwell or experience pain, nausea, dizziness or shortness of breath while participating in the event, please stop rowing and consult a medical expert. If you have recently tested positive or have symptoms of COVID-19, we strongly advise against competing. 10 | P a g e
