Starting a team The key requirements to form your own high school team include: 1. A desire and commitment to encourage fishing in your school, recruit members and participate in club, state and national events. 2. A minimum of two (2) interested students entering grades 9-12 and a coach/club advisor. The coach/club advisor works with the students and the school for coordination of the meetings and activities. 3. It is recommended that each angler have an active Minnesota DNR Watercraft permit. To complete the Minnesota DNR Watercraft permit class please see the following website: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/boatwater/education.html. The course can be completed online from home, via home study or by completing a DNR classroom at locations around the state. The online option is the recommended method for convenience. 4. Each member must participate in the designated community service events each year

Boat Captains WHO CAN BE A BOAT CAPTAIN? ● Neighbors, Friends, Family, etc.! ● Anyone ages 18 and older not fishing as a member of a high school team, has a boat, and can drive big motor with knowledge of watercraft safety laws and rules in Minnesota. ● All boat captains need to check with their team's coach to go through a background check protocol. WHO CANNOT BE A BOAT CAPTAIN? ● Employees, officers and directors of B.A.S.S. or its parent, subsidiary, and affiliated companies and members of their immediate families (spouse, parents, children and sibling, regardless of where they live). ● Local professional fishing guides.
What about the boat? All boats must: ● have an operating livewell with aeration system to keep all bass alive throughout the day (checked at morning take-off) ● have an operating kill switch connected to the boat captain when the big motor is in operation (checked at morning take-off) ● have maximum 250 hp and minimum 16 foot length and power cannot exceed Coast Guard maximum limitations. ● carry a $300,000 minimum liability insurance policy with a copy readily available upon random checks at morning check-in.
Boat captains Recommendation: Put kids in responsibility of securing their own boat captain, forming the relationship, and continuing that relationship. ● It’s their ticket to the water, so have them earn it and have ownership in it. ● Create a list of interested and available captains for your team and offer it to your anglers to have them make the calls.
Encourage the right approach to anglers and coaches This should be a competition between the anglers on tournament day. Anglers should try and create their own gameplans, fish for their own fish, and compete against the other anglers that way. Captains should help guide that process, teach corrections, and explore new ideas.
Wildcards An opportunity outside of angling to reach the State Tournament: ● Volunteer your team to “host” any conference open tournament ○ Bring 10+ volunteers - roughly ⅓ to ½ adults ○ Fill the roles to provide an excellent tournament experience for the participants ○ Highly recommended to do this for another conference open that is not yours. ○ Great opportunity to see a tournament from the execution side.
What will happen at the 11-1 pm meeting? Conference Layout and Commissioner Selection Registration process rollout for the 2020 season State Championship format discussion Breakout session to select lakes and dates for June/July Conference tournaments
