4 INTRODUCTION Welcome to Swansea and welcome to the 2018 JCP Swansea Half Marathon. We are delighted to welcome some of you back and some of you for the first time as you prepare to run the streets of our great City. 2018 marks the 5th anniversary of our race and we are delighted to share our celebrations with each and every one of you. With a new faster, flatter route we are looking forward to seeing many of you achieve those sought after Personal Best’s. For the second consecutive year, the JCP Swansea Half Marathon has been awarded Gold at the UK Running Awards, making us the UK’s Best Half Marathon. We would like to take this opportunity to thank ALL runners, partners, charities, sponsors, racemakers, suppliers and friends who continue to show enormous levels of support. We are a small team, always striving to deliver the best race we can, this year will be no different as we prepare to take you #FromTheCityToTheSea as you #Run5wansea. Please ensure you are in the best physical shape to tackle the challenge ahead, this race is a half marathon run over 13.1 miles (21km). Your decision on the day that you can run should be based on the knowledge that you have trained sufficiently and are able to run 10 miles at any one time. If you haven’t been able to undertake the required training you will struggle to finish the race safely and won’t enjoy it, so be prepared! #Run5wansea
6 RACE DAY INFORMATION – GETTING HERE BY CAR : The main access route to Swansea is via the M4 using Junctions 42–47. BY TRAIN : If you are arriving by train, Swansea Central station is located on High Street and is a 15–20 minute walk to the Pre-Race Race Village at Guildhall Green. PARKING : The start of the JCP Swansea Half Marathon is outside the iconic Brangwyn Hall (SA1 4PE). Due to the location, parking and race day traffic can become congested very quickly at certain times of the day. Therefore, we suggest you leave enough time to park, and prepare for the race. As well as planning when you leave from Swansea after the race. Please be aware you need to access the car parks prior to the road closures commencing – please refer to the Traffic Plan on Page 22. PLEASE NOTE. THERE IS NO PARK & RIDE FACILITY FOR 2018 ROAD CLOSURES : The JCP Swansea Half Marathon is a fully closed road event. As such there will be road closures in operation for the duration. The majority of roads will reopen once all runners are on the promenade. For details of all roads affected and the timings of closures please click here. Details of road closures can be found on the Traffic Plan on Page 22. #Run5wansea
7 RACE DAY INFORMATION YOUR RACE NUMBER (BIB) : The JCP Swansea Half Marathon is a timed event and uses the MyLaps bibtag system, which is attached to your Bib number. Please ensure your Bib is secured to the FRONT of your vest/t-shirt. Do NOT cut/fold or in any way modify your race number. During the race, your Bib is your identification. If you are not correctly displaying your race number at all times you will be disqualified and maybe removed from the course. Your timing chip will activate as you cross the start line so please don’t worry if others start ahead of you. All runners must wear their Race Bib, failure to wear this will lead to no time being registered and you being asked to leave the course. Should you lose or misplace your Bib there will be a limited number available at the Information Point situated in Guildhall Green (SA1 4PE). Be aware there is a cash only charge of £10 for replacement packs/timing chips, so please don’t lose or forget to bring yours! IMPORTANT - YOU MUST NEVER WEAR SOMEONE ELSE’S BIB. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE MEDICAL INFORMATION ON THE BACK OF THE BIB. If you have a medical condition we should be aware of please mark the front of your bib with a RED X. RACE DAY REGISTRATIONS : There is no registrations on Race Day. Race Day Bib collection will be available from the SHM tent in the Race Village situated on Guildhall Green for those who missed the postal entry deadline. #Run5wansea

11 MEDICAL CONDITIONS Please note that you should have made us aware of any medical conditions during your registration. If since registering, you have received a diagnosis for a medical condition we should be aware of, please inform us or a member of St John Cymru Medical Team and ensure you mention this in your medical information on the rear of your Bib and mark the front of your Bib with a RED X. If at any time during the race you feel unable to continue, please stop, rest and locate the nearest marshal for advice. It is your responsibility to inform the organisers if you have any special medical conditions. MEDICAL STATIONS : These are provided and staffed by St John Cymru and will be situated along the route and at the start/finish zone. If you need help or treatment please proceed to any one of these stations. Fully equipped and manned emergency vehicles and ambulances will be positioned around the course. GENERAL RUNNING COURTESY : Please be aware of your fellow runners during the event. Not everyone is an experienced runner and some may be running their very first half marathon. We ask that you treat everyone with respect and offer to help anyone who may appear to need it during the race. #Run5wansea
12 BAGGAGE Runners can deposit a single bag at the baggage lorry at the pre-race Race Village near to the Guildhall Green. Please do not bring, store or leave valuable items in your bag. The organisers, partners, staff, volunteers or anyone working with or at the Event will not be responsible for loss or damage of personal items. All bags should be securely closed to prevent items from falling out. Please ensure you have all you require for your run BEFORE depositing your bag. Please loop the baggage band provided in your race pack around the handle of your bag for easy identification. Please only bring a bag if essential. Post-race you will need to collect your baggage from the baggage lorry located in the LC Car Park, a short 2 minute walk from the Race Village in Museum Green (SA1 1SN). 13 THE START AND TIMING PENS Your race number will be preceded by a letter, ‘A-F’. The letter indicates which starting pen you should start in. The timing pens are as follows: Pen A – sub 1.30 (up to 1.29) Pen B – sub 1.45 (1.30 – 1.44) Pen C – sub 2.00 (1.45 – 1.59) Pen D – sub 2.15 (2.00 – 2.14) Pen E – sub 2.45 (2.15 – 2.44) Pen F – plus 2.45 (2.45 plus) Entry to your pen will be indicated by a large flag with the corresponding letter on it. All runners are asked to access the Start area via Guildhall Road North if coming from Guildhall Green and via Francis Street. For safety reasons and in respect of your fellow runners please assemble in the correct pen. Ensure that you allow enough time to walk to the start and assemble in the correct pen. Pens will open at 0830. You will not be allowed to enter a faster timed pen, but you can move backwards should you wish to remain with friends. DISTANCE MARKERS & ROUTE SIGNAGE : All mile markers, water stations, most toilets and medical stations will be clearly marked. #Run5wansea
14 WATER, NUTRITION & TOILETS Brecon Carreg Water is available at miles 3, 6, 9, 12 and the finish area. Energy gels will be at the 6 and 9 mile mark. Please discard your empty bottles and gel wrappers carefully in the bins provided or in the sign- posted “drop zone” which will be in close proximity to the water/gel station. Help our hygiene team by depositing any waste at these points! TOILETS : There will be toilets located in the Race Village (pre & post-race), near the Start/Finish area and at various locations across the route. Urination on the street will result in disqualification and a ban from the event in future. Race Officials will be monitoring for offenders. REMEMBER : Running too fast at the start is harmful for your race and will cause you to become fatigued too early and generally you will not enjoy your run at all. Start in the correct zone, start steadily and enjoy your run! #Run5wansea

18 PACING We have a fantastic team of pacers from Xempo who are there to help you. There will be a team of pacers who will run the JCP Swansea Half Marathon within the following estimated times: 1.30, 1.40, 1.45, 1.50, 2.00, 2.10, 2.15, 2.20 and 2.30. The Xempo race pacing team will be on the course wearing flags that correspond with your estimated finish time. Look out for the pacer within your start pen and try to stay with them throughout the race to ensure accurate timing. Please remember not to overestimate your pace, if you set off too fast you will tire quickly and be likely to struggle later in the race. THE FINISH : On completion of the JCP Swansea Half Marathon, please keep on moving through the finish area and into the funnel system as there will be a great number of runners finishing around you. Please listen to all instructions from the Race Team as it is imperative that the flow of runners crossing the line is not stopped in anyway Your FINISHER technical t-shirt and your medal will be situated further on into the funnel, please collect them as you pass through as you will not be able to return into the post finish area once you have exited. RACE RESULTS : Provisional race results will be provided immediately in the post finish area. Results will be available on the race website by 9pm on race day. Each runner will be able to download their very own official race certificate and times following the event. #Run5wansea
19 PRESENTATION CEREMONY There will be a prize presentation which will take place at 1100am on The Wave Stage close to the finish area. Presentations will be made to winners and to the top 3 male and female finishers. PLEASE NOTE, no prizes will be given on Race Day. Results will be given ratified within 14 days of the event and all prizes will be sent by post. PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO : Photographs and video footage will be taken at the half marathon so DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR SMILE!!!! DROPPING OUT : If you feel you cannot or do not wish to continue with your race, this is what you have to do: Make your way to the left hand side of the road and flag down the St John Cymru Sweep Vehicle which will be following the last runner. Upon boarding, your race number must be shown to the crew member on board who will note it down and you will not receive a time, medal or certificate. IMPORTANT : Runners who exit the course as indicated above will not be allowed to re-enter the race course under any condition and the runner will be classified as DNF (Did Not Finish). #Run5wansea
20 SPECTATORS Being a spectator is a fun way to spend the morning watching and supporting the runners, especially those tired runners who need an extra cheer. Please respect the marshal’s directions and decisions. At the start/finish area, spectators are only allowed into the designated public areas. If you, your family or friends are watching the race this year, please be courteous towards the runners. Do not obstruct or get in their way and do not move the barriers or tape installed around the course. Support all passing runners with a clap or a cheer – it may help them to make it to the finish line!! #Run5wansea
21 5 GOLDEN RULES – arrive at the start by 0840. – do not bring any valuables with you. – wear running gear and shoes that you are well used to – nothing new that may chafe, irritate or hurt. – do not stop or alter direction suddenly. This applies particularly at the water/ gel stations. Do not dive sideways for the first table – go on and steer gently towards one of the other tables which have fewer runners taking water. Our water stations stretch for a minimum of 10 meters of the road. – drink often & try to carry your water bottle to the next water station. TOP 5 DO’S : – Pack your kit & a change of clothes the night before. – Ensure that you fill out the information on the rear of your race bib. – Eat an early light breakfast. – Arrive at the event in plenty of time, dressed to run with your race number attached to the FRONT of your top. – Sip water to remain hydrated (pre & post race hydration is vital, particularly if it’s warm). TOP 5 DONT’S : – If you feel ill in anyway, do not take part in the race. There are always other races. – Don’t try anything new on race day, stick to what you know in your training. – Don’t start out too quick, follow your race plan even though you might be excited. – Don’t run on a full stomach as this will make you feel uncomfortable. – Don’t remove your race bib until you have left the race village. #Run5wansea

26 SHM FAMILY DASH The SHM Family Dash returns for it’s 3rd year. The 1KM fun run is suitable for runners of all ages and abilities. Starting at Swansea Castle, the fun run takes in 1KM of the Official Half Marathon route before crossing the Official Half Marathon Finish Line. Race bibs for the Family Dash will need to be collected from the Front Runner Events Information Tent at Museum Green from 0730 on Race Day. The Family Dash will start at approximately 0930 from Swansea Castle. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. And all children must be met at the end of the “run-off” area in Museum Green. 27 RACE VILLAGE The pre-race Race Village at the 2018 JCP Swansea Half Marathon will be situated at Guildhall Green (SA1 4PE), this is where you should drop your baggage off. The post-race Race Village Museum Green (SA1 1SN). Come and immerse yourself in all the wonderful excitement of race day. Join your fellow runners, friends and family in the electric atmosphere following your 13.1mile effort, visit our charities, food vendors and other traders whilst you celebrate your achievement. MASSAGE : A team of sports therapists provided by Gary Howells and Gower College Swansea will be based in the Race Village in Museum Green to provide a well deserved massage post-race. Massage will be free, however there will be a bucket at the end of the beds for donations. #Run5wansea

29 CORPORATE CHALLENGE Businesses from across Wales will again compete to become winners of this year’s SHM Corporate Challenge. Companies will push themselves to win the title of the quickest company in South Wales, as they compete with the team from JCP Solicitors, who are current champions. The corporate teams taking part will range from small groups of 5 team runners to a maximum of 50. The Corporate Champions are decided based upon the first 5 fastest team members. Average times will be calculated between the first 5 runners to reach finish line of every participating business. The winning team will receive a donation from Front Runner Events to be given to their nominated charity of the year. ® “The Corporate Challenge is such a valuable part of the JCP Swansea Half Marathon. It does so much to boost camaraderie, morale and a sense of common purpose among colleagues across Wales. 38 DID YOU KNOW? – The JCP Swansea Half Marathon celebrates it’s 5th year anniversary at this year’s race. – Over £1.5 million has been raised across all Front Runner Events races for good causes. – Paul Coker will attempt to break the World Record for the most Type 1 Diabetics to run a Half Marathon at this year’s race. – Our oldest runner at this year’s race is 80 years old and the youngest is 17 years old. – Over the years the race has attracted a number of famous faces including: Shane Williams, Ryan Jones, Ian Gough, CJ De Mooi, Eve Myles.
