Start List A Grade Bev May Name Club Name Club Bev first became interested in cycling in 1958 when her brother took up the sport. 1 Pip Sutton Hamilton CCC 16 Renee Wootton North Harbour There had been women cyclist’s before Bev but they had never been allowed to ride with the men. This all changed when Bev got her chance to show the guys what she 2 Abigail Morton * Counties Manukau 17 Laura Newman-Watt North Harbour was made of. During a novelty day held by the Waipa Wheelers, Bev not only took 3 Dayna Haythorne North Harbour 18 Anna Wilkinson Counties Manukau part in the race against the men her age but then went and beat them. This inspired 4 Olivia Ray Auckland CC 19 Greer Haddock * Auckland Central Bev to want to race against the men every week. Only one problem, women weren’t allowed to race with the men. The blokes weren’t having a bar of it. Bev’s 5 Alicia Evans Counties Manukau 20 KerryAnne Paige Napier persistence paid off and in 1960 she became the first women in NZ to take out a 6 Courteney Lowe Tauranga CC 21 Leslie Vanner Te Awamutu SC racing license. The men put out a petition to try and ban Bev from racing with them 7 Laura Jorgensen Tauranga CC 22 but thankfully for us, it failed. 8 Deborah Paine Tauranga CC 23 Bev competed for 28 years, becoming the fastest women in the 160km Mt Egmont 9 Kirsty McCallum Ramblers CC 24 (now Taranaki) race in 1966 in a time of 4 hours 54 minutes and winning the 10 Karen Fulton Tasman Wheeers 25 Morrinsville Open. Unfortunately, it was an accident that ended Bev’s competitive 11 Ione Johnson PNP 26 days in 1988. It would probably be easier to list the body parts Bev didn’t fracture. This hasn’t diminished Bev’s love of cycling or her contribution. Prior to that Bev had 12 Kate Wightman North Harbour C 27 already been active in the administration side of the sport. She’s been the club 13 Amanda Jamieson Cycling CHB 28 secretary at Morrinsville Wheelers longer, I imagine, than most people can recall. 14 Rebecca Kingsford Te Awamutu SCC 29 And in 1990 she started the Bev May’s Women’s Tour. 15 Nia Dixon * Te Awamutu SCC * Denotes U19 Rider Start List U17 Grade Name Club Name Club 60 Holly Bliss Counties Manukau 70 Lucy Thomson Counties Manukau 61 Summer Williams Te Awamutu SCC 71 Lucy Buckeridge North Harbour 62 Jorja Clouth Counties Manukau 72 Lily Brinsdon CMC 63 Grace Cummins Counties Manukau 73 Aimee Shaw Ramblers Cycling 64 Maddi Douglas Te Awamutu 74 Erica Hipkins CMC 65 Aimee Blackmore Counties Manukau 75 Annabel Brown Counties Manukau 66 Olivia Hyland Counties Manukau 76 Emma McKay Hamilton CCC 67 Ella Wyllie Counties Manukau 77 Alexandra Galvin Counties Manukau 68 Lara Hopkinson Counties Manukau 78 Zoe Croton Te Awamutu SC 69 Erin Cutts North Harbour C 79 4 25
