2017 Visitors & Newcomers Guide COMMUNITY Wharton museums Wharton County’s history, from the 1800s to today, can be found in the Wharton County Historical Museum and 20th Century Tech- nology Museum. A historical airplane exhibit, a visual timeline of technology, lineages of the lives of local notables such as Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award winning playwright Hor- ton Foote, and a trophy room with a game col- lection comparable to that of any museum of natural science all coexist under the same roof. Wharton residents Marshall and Lillie Johnson rose to wealth from the oil and gas and farming industries. During their lifetimes, most of their fortune (more than $30 million) was donated to health care within the area. Their home and trophy room were deeded to Wharton County for the purpose of establish- ing the new and larger museum, which opened in August 1991.
