SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS PROMOTION AND RELEGATION 2018/19 Second update regarding the Standardised rules on our website. For the purposes of this exercise for us- Step 5 is the Premier Division and Step 6 is the First Division. Step 4 and Step 5 The Clubs finishing in the bottom two places in each of the seven divisions at Step 4 at the end of the Regular Season will be relegated and placed in the most geographically appropriate division at Step 5. These Clubs will be replaced by the fourteen Clubs finishing in first position in each of the fourteen divisions at Step 5 at the end of the Regular Season. With effect from the commencement of the 2019/20 season, the following will apply: In addition, a series of Play Off Matches shall be played between the Clubs finishing in second position in each of the Leagues at Step 5 at the end of the Regular Season. The ties shall be decided by the Association pairing Clubs on the most suitable geographical basis. These matches shall be played on a single match basis on the ground of the Club with the best points per match ratio in the Regular Season. The winners of each of these seven matches shall play a final Play Off Match against one of the Clubs finishing third from bottom of each Step 4 division at the end of the Regular Season, such matches to be decided by the Association so that each Step 4 Club plays a Step 5 Club; such matches to be on a single match basis on the home ground of the Step 4 Club on cup tie terms with no percentage being paid to any Competition. The seven winners shall play at Step 4 in the following season. The 2018-19 Regulations resume here. The Clubs to be promoted from Step 5 will be allocated to the most geographically appropriate division at Step 4. A Club promoted to Step 4 shall comply with the Licencing System provision as set out in Appendix 1 to the Standardised Rules. Step 5 and Step 6 The Clubs in the bottom two places in each of the fourteen divisions at Step 5 at the end of the Regular Season will be relegated and placed in the most geographically appropriate division of Step 6. These Clubs will be replaced by the nineteen Clubs finishing in first position in each of the Leagues at Step 6 at the end of the Regular Season together with the required number of Clubs finishing in second position at the end of the Regular Season on a ‘points per match’ ratio. If there are insufficient Clubs to fill vacancies Clubs finishing second to bottom of the Step 5 divisions will be reprieved so that the best such Club shall be reprieved first. Step 6 and 7 At the end of the Regular Playing Season the Clubs in the bottom two positions of each of the nineteen Step 6 divisions will be liable to relegation. All Step 7 Clubs seeking promotion to Step 6 must make application using the prescribed form direct to The Association, copied to their existing League, by 31st December in the relevant year. In order to be considered for promotion Clubs must finish in 1st position in their Step 7 league. If the Club finishing in 1st position does not wish to be promoted or fails to meet the entry criteria, then the club finishing in 2nd position will be eligible for promotion. If the club in 2nd position does not seek promotion or fails to meet the entry criteria, then clubs down to 5th position may be considered for promotion provided that they meet the appropriate entry criteria. Clubs finishing below 5th position will not be considered for promotion and only one club will be considered from each League. Each application must be accompanied by the agreed application fee, as determined by the Committee, which is non-refundable. No more than 38 Clubs will be promoted from Step 7. If more than 38 Clubs are eligible for promotion they will be chosen based on ‘a points per match’ basis. Where the eligible Clubs count does not reach 38 in number, reprieves of Step 6 Clubs shall come into effect on ‘a points per match’ basis. Sunday, 05 August 2018 18/19 Edition #07 Page 3 of 18

Ringwood Town 1-1 Amesbury Town 35 Lee Vint Robbie Owen Whitchurch United 0-1 Verwood Town 56 Matt Vining 15 MATCH REPORTS The season commenced under the lights at the Bypass Ground in the First Division and the Hamble Community Facility in the Premier. There was a good number for an entertaining game at the former which saw Romsey’s Kieran Hancock going down in the history book as opening the scoring not just for this team but for the league this term; coming on the stroke of half time with a header from a corner to give the hosts the advantage. Two quick goals wrapping up the points for Romsey with a strike from Harry Draycott and a Matt Page header, although the visitors notched a consolation goal with ten left through Jack Attrill. Meanwhile at Hamble Lane, the first half was fairly even, with the visitors looking to be more on top after the break. The hosts showed little urgency and looked to be happy with a share of the spoils although the visitors’ keeper Nic Jones made a decent late save to keep it that way. Ian Craig writes ALTON 2-2 NEWORT (IOW) Newport (IOW) came back from 2 goals down to earn a draw at Anstey Park this afternoon. The game kicked off in temperatures more suited to cricket with players from both sides cancelling each other out in the early stages. The first chance to break the deadlock fell to Alton’s Scott Sanderson whose shot was well saved by Newport’s keeper Ryan Hall. Newport responded when a cross from Joe Craig was met by Jared Wetherick but was well blocked by the Alton defence. On 19 minutes Alton took the lead, Callum Burch crossed the ball from the right and Steve BLACK scored from close range on his Brewers’ debut. The home club should have extended their lead when Scott Sanderson missed two chances, shooting wide on both occasions. Newport’s Joe Craig was unlucky when his 25-yard shot was pushed over the bar by Aaron Bufton. HT 1-0 Newport came out in the 2nd half and took the game to their hosts but 10 minutes into the 2nd half it was Steve Black whose cross was put past the Newport goalkeeper by Callum BURCH to give Alton a two-goal lead against the run of play. A mix up in the Alton defence gave Newport a lifeline when Mark TAYLOR calmly stroked the ball into the net after 63 minutes. Newport continued to press the Alton defence and 10 minutes later were rewarded when Jared WETHERICK’s header found the back of the net to equalise for the Islanders. A last-ditch tackle by Lewis Weight on Scott Sanderson prevented a late winner for Alton who peppered the Newport goal in the final five minutes. FT 2-2 Mike Robins writes DOWNTON 0-2 UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH In blistering conditions, the visitors ran out as 2-0 winners with both gaols coming in the first half. The Robins enjoyed early pressure and on seven minutes Prentice gaining the benefit of a missed clearance that saw Hunt in the United Services goal make a decent one handed save to keep the ball out. Five minutes later a touch of magic from Potter saw him bring the ball down well inside the penalty area at the Sports Centre end only to see his shot flying wide of the target. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS On 21 the speedy Richardson turned Jeffes to fire a shot goalwards but again the visiting keeper was not troubled. After a spell of pressure, the visitors earned a corner. JEFFES rose unmarked around 12 yards out to head into the roof of the net. As half time approached, Robins’ keeper Gunstone-Gray had to be alert to the danger and pulled off a smart save, quickly releasing the ball the hosts nearly levelled matters in the quick break. However United Services doubled their advantage with three minutes left in the first half when GLENN drove low to the left of Gunstone-Gray to make it 0-2. HT 0-2 Barely three minutes after the restart a superb header from Downton’s Smith somehow stayed out, and in the ensuing scramble the ball was cleared upfield where Franklyn latched on to the ball but saw his well struck shot well parried by Gunstone-Gray. On the hour mark Steer broke into the visitors’ penalty area but was closed down and could only force a corner that came to nothing. With 10 minutes left Cotton who had come on for Pike came close but a well-timed last-ditch challenge from Downton’s Smith thwarted the attempt. A few moments later a speculative effort from Dark saw Gunstone- Gray again called into action, and the ball was diverted away for a corner. Tempers became a bit frayed towards the finish, but the visitors were worthy winners in a game played in very hot conditions. FT 0-2 John Gorman writes BASHLEY 2-0 ANDOVER NEW STREET Andover New Street made their bow in the Premier Division with a visit to the New Forest and Bashley for what was probably the first competitive fixture between the two clubs. On a day when the conditions – a temperature around thirty degrees and a hard-baked pitch – were not overall conducive to good football they went down by two goals to nil and despite their efforts on the day they cannot really quibble about the result. The home side bossed the midfield and Street, as an attacking force, never got going on the day. The visitors enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges with the Bashley defence rescued by an offside flag after a Luke Kneller through ball caused some confusion and Shane Lock’s cross, after Callum Sweeney had put him clear, passed across the six-yard area untouched by friend or foe. There was then confusion at the other end between goalkeeper Dave Tasker and his defence but fortunately for Street Bashley could not take advantage, but they did so a minute or so later as the defence failed to deal with a through ball, there was no flag, and Harry McGRATH coolly rounded Tasker to put the home side ahead with fifteen minutes on the clock. Inspired by the goal the home side took the game to New Street and Sam Jackson saw a header cleared off the line and Tasker was at full stretch to deny Nasim Meddah. Bashley, with skipper Brad Morris very much to the fore, were dominating the midfield and after a drinks break completely wasted a free kick on the edge of the area, the ball disappearing high in to the trees behind the goal. New Street did not help themselves with more confusion between Tasker and his defence, which Sunday, 05 August 2018 18/19 Edition #07 Page 13 of 18
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS Kneller eventually tidied up, before Meddah twice came close, firstly with a fine run that was spoilt by a poor finish and then a better effort well held by Tasker. After a further drinks break a speculative 40 yard effort from Sweeney was easily held by goalkeeper Collins and with the half time whistle following that was Street’s only effort on goal in the opening forty five minutes. HT 1-0 The visitors replaced McAuley Stubbs with Josh Wilson at the break and reverted to a back four which largely solved the problems caused by the long ball in the opening half but whatever was said in the half time team talk was probably deemed irrelevant after just three minutes when Bashley doubled their lead. A long free kick from the right touchline was headed against the bar by Jackson and McGRATH reacted the quickest to force the loose ball home. A Morris through ball provided another opening but the offside flag intervened and McGrath made himself some space with clever footwork only to put his shot wide. The referee, who had handled the game quietly and efficiently, then brandished his yellow card twice in as many minutes with the two number tens – White and Sweeney – the recipients and with the heat and effort expended beginning to take its toll both sides slowly used all their allowed substitutions. McGrath just failed to make contact with a Jackson cross but was denied a chance of a hat trick when he became one of the players substituted and the game rather drifted to its conclusion. Morris [pictured left] was named Man of the Match – one imagines that will not be the only time this season – and Bashley had gained their first points of the campaign. The opening games of the season are going to be a learning curve for New Street and they will face tougher tasks in weeks to come. To their credit they never stopped battling, but they created little up front and certainly lacked any physical presence in that area. And surely no one watching or playing today will vote for Summer football – it was simply too hot. Gary Day writes AFC PORTCHESTER 5-2 TEAM SOLENT The baking hot summer continued into the start of the football season as AFC Portchester and Team Solent did battle for Premier Division points on the opening day of the campaign. The Solent starting eleven included six debutant players, the usual difficulties of putting out a ‘student XI’ in early August being evident. Perhaps football seasons should coincide with the academic year! It would be cooler then too! Portchester, one of the fancied teams this season, started strongly with Roach and Searle being off target whilst Solent’s Hunt got in a fine interception to deny Woods. They took the lead when EVANS cut across from the right and his low left-foot shot went inside the near corner. The Royals soon added to their advantage when MASON netted with a far post header from a right-wing cross. The home side continued to apply the pressure but Solent keeper Londors saved a turning Roach shot and a Breed effort from some distance came off the Solent bar and went over. Little was seen of Solent as an attacking force but suddenly they got a goal back with Wallace finding Stahler who laid it on to HAJI to shoot low into the near corner and it seemed strange that their struggles getting forward up to then were rewarded with a goal of ‘one-touch simplicity’. Portchester continued to look threatening as a Woods header produced a low save from Londors. Solent were awarded a penalty when Wallace was held back in the home box and NOLAN sent keeper Price the wrong way from the spot. HT 3-2, the home side making many opportunities but were quite wasteful whilst a couple of rare forays into the Portchester box paid dividends for Solent resulting in a ‘closer’ margin than it might have been. Into the second half and Londors made a good save after Hallahan had controlled the ball on his chest and struck low. Portchester reopened a two-goal gap on the hour when Ford crossed from wide on the left and HALLAHAN headed home, reminding of the days of orthodox wingers and number nines who could find space and head the ball. It was a tough battle in the heat as Solent struggled to make any impression on the Portchester goal as the game progressed. Late in the game a foul in the box resulted in a Portchester penalty which sub TURVEY duly converted via a touch off the diving Londors. FT 5-2 Sunday, 05 August 2018 18/19 Edition #07 Page 14 of 18
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS Keith Legg writes BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS 0-4 SHOLING Dan Mason scored a hat-trick to get the Boatmen's season off to an excellent start with a big win on the road at Bemerton Heath. Lee Wort also got a deserved goal as Sholing created lots of chances, whilst Ryan Gosney was a virtual spectator for much of the match. It was a very hot day in Salisbury, but the pitch was remarkably lush and in good shape despite the heatwave and lack of rain. The home team were given a warning of what was to follow, as early as the first minute, when Dan Mason rolled his marker and was in on goal, but prodded wide of the near post. The Boatmen were on top and made it count in the 6th minute by taking the lead. A corner was half-cleared and played back into the box where the keeper didn't get a clean connection with a punch, the ball dropping to Wort to poke towards goal, with Dan MASON getting the final touch to divert it over the line as Bemerton's appeals for offside were waved away by the officials. Sholing were playing some nice stuff, linking up well with overlaps on both left and right flanks and opening up Bemerton. Both, Cuthbertson and McLean had got in behind before Billy Connor and Owen Royl combined with a cross finding Wort at the far post, but on the stretch, his effort went over. The second goal soon arrived as Owen Royl's freekick out on the right wing was met by Dan MASON rising highest in the area to meet the ball with a well directed header that found the far top corner. More interplay from Sholing saw Billy Connor break into space inside the box, his shot beat the keeper but cannoned back off the foot of the post. Lee Wort also saw a header go narrowly wide as the first half was being played almost exclusively in the Bemerton half. However, the home side finally fashioned a chance on 40 minutes and probably should’ve scored as a cross was put over from close range. HT 0-2 Sholing were looking to kill the game off early in the second half and did exactly that on 55 minutes as Dan MASON claimed his hat- trick with a typical clinical finish. Pete Castle's ball in saw him control, use his strength to hold off his marker and smash a shot in at the near post. He almost had a 4th straight away but a diving header went just wide. The tempo of the game dropped as the heat took its toll on both sides, but Sholing remained in control and looked like scoring with every attack and could have had a hat-full in the last 15 mins. The fourth goal arrived on 75 minutes when Lee WORT controlled a through ball, advanced towards goal and drilled a low shot under the diving keeper from 10 yards. Soon after, Wort flicked a ball over a defender's head inside the area, with it striking the Bemerton's player's raised hands, but despite both officials being close-by, no penalty was awarded. Despite limping through the last few minutes of the game, Dan Mason almost scored twice. Although laying on the floor in the area, he hooked a shot over his head and over the keeper, but against the bar. Soon after, he took a bouncing ball first time and lobbed the keeper, but it went inches over. The final scoreline reflected Sholing's dominance in a good team display to make it consecutive 4-0 wins at Bemerton and get this campaign off to a great start. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS Joseph Brown writes TADLEY CALLEVA 3-1 FAREHAM TOWN Photo courtesy of Nick White Making our first ever visit to Barlows Park, the visiting Creeksiders suffered an opening day 3-1 defeat against freshly promoted Tadley Calleva Fareham got off to the best possible start when just 54 seconds in Callum LAYCOCK got his head on the end of Brynley Mckie's lovely cross to put Town top of the league with possibly the quickest goal in the Premier Division this season. [Ed- The goal coming inside a minute may or may not be a League record for opening day, unfortunately I do not hold such records since the mid 2000’s] Tadley hit back quickly afterwards and a combination of Dave Hook and Shawn Benjamin managed to crowd out Elliott Amadieu as he was about to shoot. Shortly after an effort from Danny Vickers hit the top of the Town crossbar. Laycock tried to double his and Town's advantage on 22 minutes when Mckie whipped in another cross only this time the Tadley keeper tipped the ball over the bar. Austin had two chances in the space of two minutes for Fareham his first was a low shot which flew narrowly wide of the Tadley goal his second effort was a sweetly struck effort from just outside the box and the ball struck the top of the cross bar. HT 0-1 After the game one of our supporters text those not at the game that Town stayed in the changing rooms at half time, but that was incorrect as Town decided to decamp under the shade of the trees at the far end for the half time team talk, but this attempt at gallows humour was as good as it got for Town. The hosts almost equalised on 50 minutes when Shaun Dallimore’s header thumped onto the crossbar much to the relief of Towns defence. That relief was short-lived and Town can only have themselves to blame, turning into trouble and two Tadley attackers- and Brett Denham’s low cross was turned in by Sam HAMILTON. If Town thought they were under pressure beforehand, the next 5 minutes or so was like the Alamo as the post, frantic clearances and Hook in Town’s goal kept the scores level but there was little he could do after a bout of aerial ping pong from a corner, meaning DENHAM was able to finally head home and put the hosts ahead. Town were a shade of their selves by this stage and bar an effort from Gary Austin from a Matt Simm cross ruled out as the ball had already crossed the by-line, rarely looked like getting back into the game and it was the hosts who continued to look the more likely scorers and right at the end, Simeon HOWELL forced the ball home after another goalmouth scramble. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS WEEK ONE ROUND UP In weather totally unsuited to football, not to mention the effect it is having on pitches everywhere, the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) season got underway with a full Premier Division Programme and a slightly reduced number of matches in Division One writes John Gorman. The Premier Division got under way on Friday evening with an attendance of 160 at Hamble Club for the visit of Lymington Town. Last season’s encounter produced eight goals but this time round neither side could find the net and after a spirited ninety minutes both Clubs seemed happy with a point. On to Saturday and Sholing were quick to show their Title credentials with a four nil win at Bemerton, never the easiest place to get a point. Dan Mason was quickly back in the goalscoring groove with a hat trick and the evergreen Lee Wort claimed the fourth. AFC Portchester were also among the goals on the opening day with a five two defeat of Team Solent and five different goalscorers, including new signings Mike Turvey and George Hallahan. Brockenhurst and Bournemouth continued their long standing rivalry with honours even in a one all draw and there was a good win for Cowes Sports. The Islanders struggled last season but a three nil win over Hamworthy was a superb tonic. Ji Nash, moving up and across from East Cowes Vics, scored twice with John McKie adding the third. Apologies incidentally that in the Preview prior to Saturday it was suggested that this game was at Hamworthy. Close season rustiness could be claimed but journalistic incompetence is a better reason and it is hoped that nobody was inconvenienced by the error. Club stalwart Lewis Whyton scored the only goal of the game to give Portland all three points against Alresford at the Grove while Shaftesbury and Baffins Milton Rovers could not muster a goal between them in Dorset. This just leaves the three promoted Clubs who mustered two wins and a loss on day one. Christchurch gained a very praiseworthy win at Horndean courtesy of two goals from Scott Joyce, with both sides reduced to ten men in the course of the game, and Tadley came back from conceding a goal in the first minute to defeat Fareham Town three one at Barlows Park with Brett Denham almost inevitably among the scorers. Not such a good start for Andover New Street as their first game at his level saw them go down two nil at a very warm Bashley, a goal in each half giving the Foresters the points. Division One also started on Friday evening with Romsey’s Keiran Hancock claiming the honour of the season’s opening goal with his side’s first in the three one defeat of Hythe and Dibden to get the Bypass Club up and running in what they hope will be a promotion quest. Another side who also have justifiable promotion ambitions are AFC Stoneham who commenced their season with a ten one rout of Andover Town at the Portway. Will Harris claimed four of the goals and Joe Sutherland scored a hat trick in the space of five second half minutes. Quite what is happening at Andover is difficult to understand. A very good side last season who deservedly won promotion that was then declined, they go down a Division rather than up and lose so heavily – after scoring first! US Portsmouth made the long trip to Downton and returned home with the points after two first half goals and there were four goals at Beatrice Avenue. Newly signed Joe Butcher scored twice to give the Vics the lead but Fawley fought back after the break to share the points. Verwood, who to say the least, had a difficult season last time round battled the A31 and A34 to Whitchurch and an early goal from Matt Vining rewarded them with all three points. The three Clubs relegated from the Premier Division notched up two draws and a defeat but Newport will no doubt be pleased with their point at Alton after coming back from two goals down to finish two all. Amesbury also secured a point in a one all draw at Ringwood but Petersfield went down three one at home to Laverstock and Ford. Luke Payne scored for the home side but unfortunately the Laverstock goalscorers have not been reported. One Saturday down, umpteen to go. Sunday, 05 August 2018 18/19 Edition #07 Page 18 of 18
