Progress vs Attainment What does Progress 8 measure? Progress 8 calculates how much progress pupils make between their results at Key Stage 2 and their results in Year 11. It is a ‘value-added’ measure, meaning pupils’ results are compared to the achievements of other pupils with similar Key Stage 2 results. All schools aim to ensure students have a progress 8 measure of 0 or above.

GCSE Maths Mr Cousins Head of Maths
Maths at BFS Higher/foundation split: Exam board states that because the foundation tier is now harder, more students will be doing foundation - 50/50 split, compared to 70/30 split previously. The new foundation goes up to grade 5 (the old B grade) Don’t worry – we will enter students for the exam that gives them the best chance of the highest grade.
MathsWatch Video clip tutorials, questions, worksheets and answers for ALL GCSE topics. Students need to be doing revision at home every week.
Mock Exams There is a 6 week MATHSWATCH revision programme for students to follow. Students complete 1 revision assignment per week, watching the tutorial videos if stuck. Little by little has a BIG impact. A revision schedule is available from Mr Cousins
Formulae Formulae need to be remembered Students should test themselves and each other as part of their revision. Formula sheets will be given out in the build up to the mock exams.
Practice Exam Papers Every week! In class and/or for homework. These need completing, marking, correcting and redoing. This is one of the best ways to prepare for a maths exam. Students should seek help from class teacher if stuck. Worked solutions and video tutorials are available online to support with these (just search ‘edexcel practice paper solutions’)
Other important factors a) Attendance b) Punctuality c) Equipment (including calculator, maths set, red pen, glues… and spares of everything for when they run out)
In summary Students will be able to reach or exceed their target if they… 1) Work hard in class 2) Complete all homework on time 3) Revise properly as guided by their teacher
Science at BFS Mr Hamilton Acting Head of Science
Science Trilogy Award (aka Combined Science) • Default science route for all students • Worth 2 GCSEs (grades awarded from 9-9 to 1-1) • Covers all 3 sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) • Prepares students for A-level or other further study
Student Pathway • All students study Trilogy Science until the end of Year 10. • Decision about Triple Science entry (3 separate science GCSEs) made after Year 11 November mocks. • Triple Science requires extra taught content, but no additional lessons. • Guiding philosophy: a 7-7 in Trilogy is better than three grade 6s in Triple
Examinations • Students will sit 6 science exams (2 papers per science). • Paper 1 covers first half of the specification and Paper 2 the second. • Papers are 1hr15 for Trilogy or 1hr45 for Triple • Paper 1s are amongst the earliest exams (12 May – 20 May) and Paper 2s amongst the latest (1 June – 12 June)
