From the Pastor May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us. Consolation, Desolation, Affirmation I’ve been using the Asbury University revival that occurred in early February—if you want a summary, read my most recent columns. But I’ve been talking about it from the perspective of Catholic spirituality. As much as many of us want to have our Big God Moment—the moment where God shows himself to us in an indisputable way that (supposedly) removes all obstacles to faith, the vast majority of our spiritual lives are lived under very ordinary conditions. The initial spiritual highs give way to spiritual lows; the positive feelings (which in Catholic lingo are called “consolations”) give way to negative feelings or apathy (called “desolations”). This is true no matter how big the Big God Moment was—if you don’t believe me, just ask St. Paul. His Big God Moment was as Big a God Moment as ever existed, and he still felt that desolation when he was sitting in a prison cell or shipwrecked at sea or nearly beaten to death. The certainty of desolation—spiritual dryness, lack of desire to pray, feelings of hopelessness or frustration or sadness—is guaranteed. We Catholics are realists, and while I sometimes wonder if our realism prevents us from being led to Big God Moments, I also appreciate very much how down to earth our everyday approach to spirituality is. St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Jesuits, created a list of rules on how to navigate periods of desolation. My favorite introduction to this material is found in Fr. Timothy Gallagher’s book The Discernment of Spirits. If you aren’t much of a reader, you can find series of lectures by him on YouTube, such as https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=_PGAEfofrJA (or just go to YouTube and type in “discerning hearts Timothy Gallagher”). These rules help us to discern the will of God for us when his will for us doesn’t seem clear. For example, I am naturally depressed in January and February (thank God we’re in March!). “Desolation is During my first years in seminary, I was so restless and disengaged that I couldn’t stand ordinary seminary life. I wondered if this attitude meant that I shouldn’t be in seminary. I the time when seriously contemplated leaving, but on good advice I was told to wait for the feeling to pass we grow the and figure it out over the summer when I was in a better state of mind. When May rolled around, I was happy that I hadn’t decided to leave. most in our Then next January and February came around. Guess what? The feelings returned. I wanted spiritual lives.” to get out of seminary more the second time around…but I remembered the advice that I had been given, waited it out, and was happy that I had not made any decisions when I was at a spiritual and psychological low point. What I only later came to realize was that my friend had taught me St. Ignatius’ fifth rule of spiritual discernment: “In time of desolation never to make a change; but to be firm and constant in the resolutions and determination in which one was the day preceding such desolation, or in the determination in which he was in the preceding consolation.” In other words, we make changes to our spiritual lives when in a state of consolation; when in a state of desolation, we stay the course. I was told not to make rash decisions when in January or February. If this topic interests you, please refer either to Fr. Gallagher’s book or lecture series. As a final note, however, the more mature I have become in the spiritual life, the less that states of desolation bother me. Desolation does not mean that God has abandoned me—I have learned to pay attention to those feelings, but not to give them the final say. Desolation is the time when we grow the most in our spiritual lives. When the good feelings go away, God is asking us a fundamental question: are you my friend because of the good feelings I provide you, or are you my friend because you love me? Are you praying because you love me, or because you love how I make you feel? Staying the course through desolation purifies our love by making it unselfish—we pray because we love God, not because he makes us feel a certain way. FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT 3
