Worship Bulletin for February 13, 2022 6th Sunday of Epiphany We gather on the historic lands of the Coastal Salish peoples. May we honor the people of this Land. May we remember that the oppression of Native peoples is not a relic of the past but Continues today. And may we, through God’s Spirit, repent and walk forward together, Changing systems that discriminate as we live into authentic diversity and healing. Liturgy means “the work of the people,” and we pray that this “work of the people” is a blessing to you this day. Our liturgy consists of four sections: the Gathering, hearing the Word, sharing the Meal and the Sending out to share the Good News. Please prepare a piece of bread or a cracker and a serving of juice or wine for our Meal.
GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. PRELUDE – Let Justice Flow Like Streams, ELW #717 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Welcome to worship! We affirm that all of creation is beloved by God, and we strive to live into that love together and as individuals. If you have been wounded by the church in the past, this is a safe place for you to process that pain. If you are unsure about God or question how to live an ethical, meaningful life, you will find fellow seekers here. If you love ancient liturgical rituals, great music, and a contemporary, thoughtful understanding of the Bible, we hope this this worship service is meaningful to you. Welcome! After worship, please join us on-line for our Fellowship Time. The link is on our website. Grab a cup of coffee and join us as we catch up with each other and engage in conversation about whatever. In addition to your regular financial support of ULC, every month ULC collects a special offering for an organization that we believe aligns with the values of God’s kingdom. For the month of February, our special offering will go to the ULC Quilters’ Fund. This fund helps pay for supplies and for shipping the quilts to Lutheran World Relief. Our Congregational Retreat will be Saturday, February 26, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Rev. Deanna Wildermuth will be our facilitator as we discuss our Vision Plan and how things have (or haven’t) changed since the pandemic. You can attend in person or by Zoom. If you plan to attend (either way), please contact Katie Saltanovitz, Council President, at 617-519-6765, to RSVP.
CONFESSION/FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who creates us, redeems us, and calls us by name. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. (Silence is kept for reflection.) C: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you and your beloved children. We have turned our faces away from your glory when it did not appear as we expected. We have rejected your word when it made us confront ourselves. We have failed to show hospitality to those you called us to welcome. Accept our repentance for the things we have done and the things we have left undone. For the sake of Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us and lead us, that we may bathe in the glory of your Son born among us, and reflect your love for all creation. Amen. P: Rejoice in this good news: In ☩ Christ Jesus, your sins are forgiven. You are descendants of the Most High, adopted into the household of Christ, and inheritors of eternal life. Live as freed and forgiven children of God. C: Amen.
GATHERING HYMN – Let Streams of Living Justice, ELW #710 GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY Lay Leader: Living God, in Christ you make all things new. Transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your glory, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. WORD God speaks in scripture reading, preaching, and song. Jeremiah 17:5-10 These verses compose a poem that is part of a larger collection of wisdom sayings that contrast two ways of life. Life with God brings blessing; the power and vitality of God is active in our life. Life without God brings a curse, the power of death. Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse—who can understand it? I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. LL: Holy Wisdom, holy Word. C: Thanks be to God!
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION – Neither Death nor Life, ELW #622 GOSPEL: Luke 6:17-26 After choosing his twelve apostles, Jesus teaches a crowd of followers about the nature and demands of discipleship. He begins his great sermon with surprising statements about who is truly blessed in the eyes of God. [Jesus] came down the mountain with [the twelve] and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear Jesus and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch Jesus, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. “Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.”
P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ! SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY – Light Dawns on a Weary World, ELW #726
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE LL: God of grace, C: Hear our prayer. CHOIR ANTHEM – Blest Are They, ELW #728 Blest are they, the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow; they shall be consoled. Refrain Rejoice and be glad! Blessed are you, holy are you! Rejoice and be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God! Blest are they, the lowly ones; they shall inherit the earth. Blest are they who hunger and thirst; they shall have their fill. Refrain Blest are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs. Blest are they, the pure of heart; they shall see God. Refrain PASSING THE PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. MEAL God feeds us through the presence of Jesus Christ. Lutherans believe in the real “presence” of Christ in communion, so it is more than a memory of a past event or a symbol of a belief. It is a mystery just how Christ is present “in, under, and through” the elements of bread and wine. GREAT THANKSGIVING AND EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, you have brought us this far along the way. In times of bitterness you did not abandon us, but guided us into the path of love and light. In every age you sent prophets to make known your loving will for all humanity. The cry of the poor has become your own cry; our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire. In the fullness of time, you sent your chosen servant to preach good news to the afflicted, to break bread with the outcast and despised, and to ransom those in bondage to prejudice and sin. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: Remembering, therefore, his life, death and resurrection, we await the day when Jesus shall return to free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death. Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church say, Amen. C: Amen! P: Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate, to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup with courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world. Come, Spirit of freedom! And let the church say, Amen. C: Amen! P: Join our prayers and praise with your prophets and martyrs of every age, that, rejoicing in the hope of the resurrection, we might live in the freedom and hope of your Son. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Creator, now and forever. C: Amen!
