Introduction Our Good Friday liturgy Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning 'darkness' or 'shadows'. A service of Tenebrae is a service of meditation and reflection, Scripture interspersed with music, for our reflection on what Christ has done for us. There will be seven candles lit. With each reading and hymn selection a candle will be extinguished, until the service ends in darkness. We depart silently. Tonight we will hear the passion story according to the gospel of John. The style used in this presentation of the Passion is that of ancient Greek drama. The three readers may be understood as a chorus of three voices speaking as one. Movement by the readers is meant to indicate movement within the story of Jesus’ final hours leading up to his death and his burial in the tomb. Life and death stand side by side as we enter into Good Friday. In John’s passion account, Jesus reveals the power and glory of God, even as he is put on trial and sentenced to death. Standing with the disciples at the foot of the cross, we pray for the whole world in the ancient bidding prayer, as Christ’s death offers life to all. We gather in solemn devotion, but always with the promise that the tree around which we assemble is indeed a tree of life. We glory in your cross, O Lord, and we praise your holy resurrection, for by your cross joy has come into the world.
PRELUDE Christ Lag in Todesbanden ~ S. Scheidt/ arr. B. Culli Mark Wherle, flute WELCOME BLESSING OF THE CROSSES P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ. Today he showed the full extent of his obedience as he was glorified on the cross. Before the entire world he sat on his throne and brought to completion all that you had planned. Bless the crosses we bear, we display, and that we wear. Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, even when joined to him in death, we may rest secure in the sure and certain hope of your power to bring life; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Chancel Choir Out of the Depths ~Martin Luther/setting by Timothy Graf PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Merciful God, your Son was lifted up on the cross to draw all people to himself. Grant that we who have been born out of his wounded side may at all times find mercy in him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.
READING: Isaiah 52:13-53:6 A: A reading from Isaiah. 13See, my servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high. 14Just as there were many who were astonished at him —so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of mortals— 15so he shall startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them they shall see, and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate. 53:1Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account. 4Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God. HYMN: O Sacred Head, verses 1-3 ELW 351 text: attrib. to Bernard of Clairvaux; tune: HERZLICH TUT MICH VERLANGEN, Hans L. Hasler
READING: Hebrews 10:16-25 A: A reading from Hebrews. 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,” 17and then is added, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that Christ opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for the one who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God. HOMILY HYMN: Ah, Holy Jesus, verses 1-2 text: Johann Heermann; music: HERZLIEBSTER JESU, Johann Crüger

A: Let us pray for those in need. Silent prayer. P: Almighty and eternal God, you give strength to the weary and new courage to those who have lost heart. Heal the sick, comfort the dying, give safety to travelers, free those unjustly deprived of liberty, and deliver your world from falsehood, hunger, and disease. Hear the prayers of all who call on you in any trouble, that they may have the joy of receiving your help in their need. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. P: Finally, let us pray for all those things for which our Lord would have us ask, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. LAMB OF GOD text: Agnus Dei; tune: ST. COLUMBA, Traditional Irish
The gospel is announced. P: Christ humbled himself, C: and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name. v JESUS IS BETRAYED AND ARRESTED John 18:1-14 FIRST CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED. Stanza 1 “My Song is Love Unknown” Words – ELW 343 Tune – LBW 94 – on back of bulletin My song is love unknown, my Savior's love to me, love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be. Oh, who am I that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh and die, my Lord should take frail flesh and die? . v JESUS AND PETER ARE TRIED John 18:15-27 SECOND CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED. Stanza 2 “My Song is Love Unknown” He came from his blest throne salvation to bestow; the world that was his own would not its Savior know. But, oh, my friend, my friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend, who at my need his life did spend!
PILATE MEETS JESUS John 18:28-40 THIRD CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED. Stanza 3 “My Song is Love Unknown” Sometimes we strew his way and his sweet praises sing; resounding all the day hosannas to our king. Then "Crucify!" is all our breath, and for his death we thirst and cry, and for his death we thirst and cry. v PILATE CONDEMNS JESUS John 19:1-16 FOURTH CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED. Stanza 4 “My Song is Love Unknown” We cry out; we will have our dear Lord made away, a murderer to save, the prince of life to slay. Yet cheerful he to suff'ring goes that he his foes from thence might free, that he his foes from thence might free. v JESUS IS CRUCIFIED John 19:17-27 FIFTH CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED. Stanza 5 “My Song is Love Unknown” In life no house, no home my Lord on earth might have; in death no friendly tomb but what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav'n was his home but mine the tomb wherein he lay, but mine the tomb wherein he lay. v JESUS DIES John 19:28-37 SIXTH CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED. SILENCE.
v JESUS IS BURIED John 19:38-42 SEVENTH CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED. Stanza 6 “My Song is Love Unknown” Here might I stay and sing— no story so divine! Never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine. This is my friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend, I all my days could gladly spend! Cross After a time of silence, this is spoken. P: Behold the life-giving cross, on which was hung the Savior of the whole world. C: Oh, come, let us worship him. After a time of silence, this is spoken. P: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. C: By your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
