         REQUIEM MASS
For the repose of the soul of
HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
                     10th June 1921 – 9th April 2021

held at 8pm on Thursday 15th April at St James’s Bushey

‘Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe
in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and
believes in me will never die.’ (John 11:25-26)
Welcome to St James’s Church

We gather today to give thanks for the life of Prince Philip, Duke of
Edinburgh, and to pray for the repose of his soul. This service forms
part of wider remembrance of his life and service to our nation following
his death on 9th April 2021.

Today is an opportunity to affirm our faith in the Risen Christ who as
Saint Paul says is the ‘first fruits of those who have fallen asleep’ (1
Cor. 15.20). It is why the Paschal Candle stands among us as it does at
a funeral, to proclaim the Resurrection even in the face of death. It is
with this hope in our hearts that we keep this solemn and beautiful day,
praying for those whom we love but see no longer.

Our prayers for the departed take place in the context of the Mass, and
it is at the heart of the Eucharistic Prayer which recalls Christ’s saving
passion, death and resurrection, that the names of the dead are read. In
this way we express that our belonging to one another in Christ as one
communion on earth and heaven transcends death, united in prayer
with those who have gone before us and now live with the risen Christ
in glory. The 20th century Anglican theologian Austin Farrer wrote:

‘May they rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon them -
those millions among whom our friends are lost, those millions for
whom we cannot choose but pray; because prayer is a sharing in the
love of the heart of God, and the love of God is earnestly set towards
the salvation of his spiritual creatures.’

The Requiem Mass setting tonight is that of Gabriel Fauré, and our
thanks to James Mooney-Dutton and the singers of St James’s Chuch
                               Choir.

Christe eleison, Christ have mercy,
Kyrie eleison. Lord have mercy

GREETING

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
     Amen.
     The Lord be with you.
     And also with you.
The President introduces the Mass.
PENITENTIAL RITE
We know that our old self was crucified with Christ so that the body
of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to
sin. Let us therefore confess our sins in penitence and faith.
Kneel
Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned again
you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in
what we have said and done. Through ignorance, through
weakness, through our own deliberate fault, we have
wounded your love, and marred your image in us, we are
     sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins;
for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, who died for us,
forgive us all that is past, and lead us out from darkness to
walk as children of light. Amen

                                     3
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon
you pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and
     strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COLLECT

Let us pray for the peace and well-being of the whole Church.

Silence is kept.

Eternal God, our maker and redeemer, grant us, with your servant
PHILIP, Duke of Edinburgh, and all the faithful departed, the sure
benefits of your Son’s saving passion and glorious resurrection:
that, in the last day, when you gather up all things in Christ, we
may with them enjoy the fullness of your promises; through Jesus
Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
     Amen.

     31
What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us,
who is against us? 32He who did not withhold his own Son, but
gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us
everything else? 33Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?
It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus,
who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God,
who indeed intercedes for us. 35Who will separate us from the love
of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or
nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As it is written, “For your sake we
are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be
slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that
neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present,
nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor
anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This is the word of the Lord.
     Thanks be to God.

     Glory to you, O Lord
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in
the tomb for four days. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some
two miles away, 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and
Mary to console them about their brother. 20When Martha heard
that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed
at home. 21Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my
brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that God will
give you whatever you ask of him.’ 23Jesus said to her, ‘Your
brother will rise again.’ 24Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will
rise again in the resurrection on the last day.’ 25Jesus said to her, ‘I
                                      5
am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even
though they die, will live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in
me will never die. Do you believe this?’ 27She said to him, ‘Yes,
Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one
    coming into the world.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
    Praise to you, O Christ.

Stand for THE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one
Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For
us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow)
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and
was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead, and his kingdom will with have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father
and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken
    through the prophets.

We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look
for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
    come. † Amen.

                                      6
THE PEACE

Jesus says: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as
the world gives do I give you. Do not let your hearts be troubled,
    neither let them be afraid.

The peace of the risen Lord be always with you
    and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

OFFERTORY

During the Offertory, the gifts of Bread and Wine are brought to the
Altar, and the gifts, altar and people are censed.

There is no collection during this service, but there is a retiring
collection afterwards. If you would like to make an offering, please put

PREPARATION OF THE TABLE

      Look upon us in mercy not in judgement;
      draw us from hatred to love;
make the frailty of our praise
a dwelling place for your glory.
All Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

      The Lord be with you.
      And also with you.

      Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.

                                    8
Blessed are you, gracious God,
creator of heaven and earth,
giver of life, and conqueror of death.
By his death on the cross,
your Son Jesus Christ offered the one true sacrifice for sin,
breaking the power of evil
and putting death to flight.

Through his resurrection from the dead
you have given us new birth into a living hope,
into an inheritance which is imperishable,
undefiled, and unfading.

And now we give you thanks because through him you have given
us the hope of a glorious resurrection; so that, although death
comes to us all, yet we rejoice in the promise of eternal life; for to
your faithful people life is changed, not taken away; and when our
mortal flesh is laid aside an everlasting dwelling place is made
ready for us in heaven.

The joy of resurrection fills the universe,
and so we join with angels and archangels,
with all your faithful people,
evermore praising you and singing:

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, Holy, Holy,
Lord God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord;
and as we obey his command,
send your Holy Spirit,
that broken bread and wine outpoured
may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
                                 9
On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and,
taking bread, he praised you.
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.
Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is
shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as
often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,
in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice
made once for all upon the cross.
Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we
proclaim his death and resurrection
until he comes in glory.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus:
dying you destroyed our death,
rising you restored our life:
Lord Jesus, come in glory.
And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,
his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming in glory,
we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.
As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,
we bring before you this bread and this cup
and we thank you for counting us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.
Remember your servant Prince Philip , Duke of Edinburgh
whom you have called from this world to yourself:
Grant that he who is united with your Son in a death like his,
may also be one with him in his Resurrection.

                               10
Send the Holy Spirit on your people
and gather into one in your kingdom,
all who share this one bread and one cup,
so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Saint James, St Paul, and all the holy Angels and Saints,
may praise and glory you forever,

   through Jesus Christ our Lord.
by whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,
   for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven,
let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

   Our Father,
   who art in heaven,
   hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come; thy will be done
   on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread,
   and forgive us our trespasses,
   as we forgive those who trespass against us;
   and lead us not into temptation;
   but deliver us from evil;
   for thine is the kingdom,
   the power and the glory,
   for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share
   in one bread.

                                 11

    for thy mercy’s sake.

The President invites the people to Communion saying:

Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word,
    and I shall be healed.

All Baptised Christians who normally receive Communion in their own
church are welcome to do so here. If you would like to receive a
Blessing, please indicate to the priest.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
for those unable to be present.

My Jesus, I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself
wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.
    Amen.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER
     Let us pray.

God of Love, may the death and resurrection of Christ, which we
have celebrated in this eucharist, bring us, with all the faithful

name of Jesus Christ, our rock and our salvation, to whom be glory
for time and for eternity. Amen.
