It is a traditional Christian celebration which marks the beginning of Lent, the period of 40 days before Easter during which no meat is eaten. Generally carnival is a public celebration, typically held outdoors and involving stalls, entertainment, and processions. There are many different types of carnival, celebrated in different styles and at different times of the year in countries across the world, including the Caribbean, Latin America and most of Europe. Hackney Carnival is special because it is created by the local community, blending the multicultural styles of carnival together in one big celebration of Hackney.
