ÉCOLE INTERNATIONALE DE THÉÂTRE JACQUES LECOQ WORKSHOPS APRIL JULY SEPTEMBER 2018 www.ecole-jacqueslecoq.com
APRIL INTRODUCTION TO PLAYING From 2 to 6 April 2018 Teachers : Paola Rizza – Anne Astolfe This workshop proposes a discovery of the Lecoq School’s approach to theatrical play. It will be a journey that leads from psychological replay - the observation of life, its rhythms and dynamics and silences from which speech springs – through to the event of the Neutral Mask, which raises and structures play whilst seizing the poetic dimension of life. The workshop will explore this through Improvisation classes, accompanied by Movement Classes dealing with physical Preparation and Movement Analysis. This workshop is for all actors (From 18 years old) interested in a first approach to the school’s teaching. A good understanding of French is required 10 am to 12.30 am – 2 pm to 4.30 pm / 25h / 500€
JULY FROM GESTURE TO WRITING From 9 to 13 July 2018 Teachers: Susana Lastreto - Frédéric Tellier This workshop proposes writing based on two essential points of the school’s pedagogy: movement and observation. We will follow the frame of a storyteller to approach: narrative style, dialogues, monologues, descriptions. This means, eve- rything that may serve a story, a novel, a play. Each day we will propose physical sollicitations as well as wri- ting and commenting. One of the teachers may propose move- ment sessions as a source of inspiration. Each participant will be asked personal work at home such as short essays to be read and analysed during the workshop. This workshop will give useful techniques to beginners to develop their own writing projects. For those who have already writing experience, we hope they will discover new ways and possibilities. The classes are given in French 9 to 11.30 am – 1 to 3.30 pm / 25h /500€
JULY PLAY AND CHARACTERS From 16 to 20 July 2018 Teachers: Paola Rizza - Jason Turner This workshop is bilingual French/English Starting from daily life observation we will imagine characters, play the roles and test them out in different improvisations. Who is playing, how does he walk, which passions drive him ? In which situations will he be credible, which conflicts reveal the counter- mask ? Will he keep dignity in his swimsuit on the beach or when he is lost in the forest ? Well he be feeble in danger ? The journey of the first year leads to the characters. Through identification with elements and animals we will find the behaviours required by the masks. Through movement analysis, scales of passions and characters we aim to the same goal : bring to life somebody different from myself and step by step give him his dramatic dimension. This workshop is an approach of characters based on the first years’ journey and provocations. Physical preparation and movement analysis will accompany the improvisations. Stage experience is required. 9 to 11.30 am – 1 to 3.30 pm / 25h / 500€
JULY FROM THE RED NOSE TO ABSURD PLAY From 16 to 20 July 2018 Teachers: Paola Rizza - Jason Turner This workshop is bilingual French/English We will discover during this workshop what Jacques Lecoq called the smallest mask in the world : the red nose. Teared between childish naivety and pathetic seriousness, the clown does not understand the world, its laws, rules and inhabitants. Confortable spectators of his confusion, amused spectators of his self mockery, we can laugh and feel ourselves superior. Later, we will replace naivety with the paradoxical logic of the absurd play, drawing the audience to face the same questions as the actors, unable to understand the Very Big (God, Life, Dead) and the very small (administration, relations, rules…). A question will arise : which language to describe a world without any sense ? When the stumbling clown confirms us in our stability and reveals our common fragility in absurd situations, the whole world is tumbling and provoking a huge dizzying laughter. A minimum of two years experience is required. 10.30 am to 1 pm – 2.30 to 5 pm / 25h / 500€
SEPTEMBER PLAY AND MASKS From 3 to 7 September 2018 Teachers: Paola Rizza - Yasuyo Mochizuki The Mask is fundamental in the training of an actor. It opens up the body and proposes particular attitudes and styles. It enlarges emotions and simplifies and clears the actor’s play from anecdotes. This workshop will explore the various masks we use in the first years’ journey : - The Neutral Mask, the mask behind all masks and a reference point for understanding how the world moves. It allows a state of receptivity, balance and curiosity in which to explore the natu¬ral world of elements and materials. - The larval Mask appeals imagination through its simple and exagerated shape. - The expressive masks, true to reality, provoke accurate and sensitive interpretations. - The american masks, close to comic strips, lead to rythmic action and great attitudes. Physical preparation and movement analysis will accompany improvisation. Stage experience is required. The classes are given in French. 9 to 11.30 am – 1 to 3.30 pm / 25h / 500€
SEPTEMBER BURLESQUE AND ACROBATICS From 10 to 14 September 2018 Teachers: Jos Houben - Anne Astolfe - Éric Nesci The art of imbalance and falling, the art of shift and accident, trying again and again to maintain the balance and nevertheless always fall pathetically, burlesque is an eternal diversification of a body refusing verticality, literally and figuratively, ignorant of rules, dignity and manners. We will explore the links between burlesque and dramatic acrobatics. From the smallest imbalance to falling head over heals, from little mistakes to big reversals, hiding technique and virtuosity so that even series of accidents make us laugh, of course, but also touch us. This workshop is for actors, acrobats and dancers who have at least two years professional experience… and a good physical condition. The workshop will be given in French. 9 am to 11.30 am – 1 to 3.30 pm / 25h / 500€
SEPTEMBER INTRODUCTION TO BURLESUE From 10 to 14 September 2018 Teachers: Jos Houben - Anne Astolfe - Éric Nesci This workshop explores the universe of physical comedy, how laughter is created. First of all we shall replay situations as they can be observed in daily life. The aim is to lay bare how things function. This will serve as the starting point to explore all possible «disfunctions»: imbalances, misunderstandings, mishaps, accidents, etc... that create laughter. The workshop is based on improvisation accompanied by technical work : - Physical preparation - Dramatic acrobatics - Movement analysis - Improvisation Stage experience is required. The workshop will be given in French. 9 am to 11.30 am – 1 to 3.30 pm / 25h / 500€

OUR 2018 WORKSHOP OUTSIDE OF PARIS STUDIO LECOQ LEES Laboratory for theatre and plastic arts research 2018 SUMMER WORKSHOP www.ecole-jacqueslecoq.com
THE STUDIO This studio, imagined by Fay Lees and Jacques Lecoq in the nineties, develops different creative activities linked to the school’s pedagogy and the LEM (Laboratory for the study of movement – department of scenography of the school). Only one hour outside of Paris, located in the Vexin countryside, this space regularly welcomes in residence companies such as : Footsbarn theatre, GRRR company (Susana Lastreto), Remote control and Manifesto Poetico. This year we are also proposing a summer workshop. This workshop will bring together theatre and plastic arts. Taking into account today’s cultural context valorising creative interaction, we propose a total immersion experience in the form of a full-time workshop.
THE WORKSHOP LEM WORKSHOP - Montagny 2018 MOVEMENT AND LANDSCAPE From Monday 16th July to Friday 20th July 2018 With Pascale LECOQ and Carlos GARCIA ESTEVEZ This workshop proposes to discover landscapes through movement. It consists of exploration, through movement, spaces, forces, directions and time in a given environment. The landscape will act as a provocation : the garden and its organisation, the wood with its secrets, the wideness of the plaines don’t carry the same space and dramatic dynamics. They deposit specific emotions and print specific paths in our bodies. The landscape will thus be our stage, our theatre. We will re-play all these observations and impressions collected by our body without caring about presentation. Later, we will transpose these statements plastically in a workshop situation and also in the landscape itself. The workshop will be organised around : - movement sessions outside - physical preparation and movement analysis inside - plastic awareness of nature and elements - observation of nature and plastic transposition This dramatic and plastic research will be with and within the landscape. This workshop is for any artist (scenographers, actors, stage directors, plastic artists, circus artists…) as well as for students who have already practiced the LEM and are eager to discover new directions. This workshop is multi-lingual. French, English, Spanish and Italian. Tariff: 850 euros/ 6 hours a day, including food and accomodation, as well as all materials needed for the plastic arts. AFDAS payment possible. Arrival on Sunday, 15th of July. Departure on Saturday 21st of July.. To apply: please send your CV, letter of motivation and photo to: contact@ecole-jacqueslecoq.com
