FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Colleagues, I hear people say, “I can’t wait until we get back to nor- mal.” What’s normal? Currently our normal for the OLLI at ISU program is online classes via Zoom and continu- ing to work from home. I’ve had to make some adjust- ments – printing documents takes extra steps; I have reduced desk space; I need to call or email co-workers now, when before I would just get up and walk to their offices; I have to make sure I have all of the supplies I need at home (what would I do without highlighters, paper clips, and rubber bands?); and the biggest adjust- ment is separating home from work. There have been some pluses – the commute to the office is short; I wear “comfy” clothes, at least from the waist down (no bunny slippers, but I am wearing slip- pers!); having lunch with my husband; and being online with all of you. I enjoy seeing your faces and hearing your conversations. More pluses this winter will be not going out in the cold, getting into a cold truck, driving in snow, finding a parking spot, walking into the building, and hoping I don’t fall on my behind! This winter the curriculum committee has really done an outstanding job of putting together 26 great classes along with a winter members-only lecture. Last winter we had just 16 classes! I hope you will get online with me this winter to take some interesting classes, and we’ll drink our cocoa together. See you online! GIVE A GIFT TO OLLI AT ISU When you register for classes, please consider adding a little extra to go toward the annual giving fund for the needs of today and for the lifelong learners of the future. Your continued support and donations to the annual fund are important for us to continue to have funds available to use as needed for additional equipment for the instructors, and to keeping the membership and class fees as low as possible. Your contributions help! Donations have purchased the following items over the last few years: cart with all of the equipment an instructor would need when teaching in Horton, hearing devices to take on day trips, five new laptops, speaker stands for the ballroom, a video camera, and a new ELMO for the ballroom. We were able to use some of this new equipment when we were still in the building. The five new laptops were very helpful during the fall classes, as one went to an instructor and one is currently with the director to “host” classes. The technology committee is looking into other items that would make the delivery and receiving of OLLI classes easier. Donations can be made at any time through the following website: http://www.isualum.org/givetoolli If you are interested in visiting about a major gift or about designating OLLI at ISU in your will, please contact Jamie Stowe at (515) 294-7441. Give the gift of Lifelong Learning When family and friends ask you what you would like for your birthday, do you feel like you don’t need any more “stuff?" Request an OLLI gift certificate instead! The information you learn and the conversations with your fellow OLLI at ISU members are priceless. By the same token, your spouse, siblings, or friends may also like a gift certificate. Certificates can be purchased in the office or online at www.isualum.org/ olligiftcertificate for any amount. 6 O L L I W I N T E R C ATA L O G 2 0 2 1

#26 – Climate Action and Planning: Ames Thursday 3:00 – 5:00 PM Two weeks, Jan. 28 - Feb. 4 Cost: $32 Online Class limit 56 In August the Ames city council received a study including a greenhouse gas inventory, a climate vulnerability assessment, and a report on renewable energy potential. The study assesses the climate implications of our community’s energy production and use, as well as our system of waste management. Ames was a very early adopter of a refuse-based fuel system for generating electricity, and it is currently building a municipal solar-power system. This class will examine how these past decisions have affected our present carbon footprint. Each class will include a guest who is involved with making and implementing decisions about these issues in Ames. This course will help you have an informed understanding of the issues, which will be useful if you wish to give public input when the city moves ahead with its Climate Action Plan this spring. Lee Anne Willson has an undergraduate degree in physics and a PhD in astronomy. She taught at Iowa State University from 1973 to 2014. Her area of expertise is the atmospheres of stars and planets. Willson has a long-term interest in issues of climate change and is a member of the Ames Climate Action Team, a citizen group that is working to support efforts by the City of Ames for climate action. Willson has previously taught OLLI classes on Cosmology, on Planets and Life in the Universe, and on the arts in Ames. Mary Richards earned a master’s degree in political science from Iowa State University and a law degree from Drake University. Richards served as Story County Attorney from 1979 through 1998. She has long been involved in action on climate issues, and co-chaired the League of Women Voters’ local study on waste manage- ment in Story County, completed in March 2020. She also is a member of the Ames Climate Action Team. O L L I W I N T E R C ATA L O G 2 0 2 1 25

U.S.-China Agricultural Trade after the 2020 Election Or U.S.-China Agricultural Trade Relations a De-globalizing World February 3, 2021 3:00 – 4:30 PM Online via Zoom Given that the U.S.-China economic and political relations are at critical inflection points, this presentation will provide insights on the U.S.-China agricultural trade relations following the 2020 election, including the trade war and phase one trade deal signed a year ago, as well as the long-term prospects of Chinese demand for U.S. and world agricultural products. The purpose is to help you understand the recent rising tensions in China-U.S. relations spanning from technology and ideology to geopolitics and its impacts on the bilateral trade relations, especially U.S.-China agricultural trade. This lecture also reviews the global trade implications of longer-term changes in Chinese agricultural markets and policies, including Chinese hog market consolidation post-African Swine Fever, rising per-capita income and meat consumption, China’s rural land reform, and the increasingly resemblance of Chinese agricultural policies with that for U.S. and Europe.
