Wh at ’s ne w t his y e a r? We’ve made some exciting changes this year, including a new no-holds-barred category, more entries allowed in each category, a more user-friendly entry process and new awards for highest-scoring entries. Here’s an overview of what’s new for the 2020 Iris Awards. CHANGES WITH GOING ONLINE FOR 2020: » ENTRY NUMBERS Going online for the 2020 Nikon IRIS AWARDS means - no print costs, no delivery costs, and no handling fee! This also means we are able to reduce entry costs significantly and accept more entries per person. For the 2020 Iris Awards Only: There is no limit to the total number of entries, or the number of entries per category, an entrant can submit (including the Student Category). » NZIPP DISTINCTIONS With open entry numbers, NZIPP and reciprocal organisation members will earn merit points on their top ten highest scoring entries only. Refer to Page 35 for further details. » ENTRY VETTING Entry vetting will take place through random entry checks where entrants may be requested to supply the original capture files for an entry or entries. Refer to Page 17 for full details. » IMAGE CAPTURE TIMEFRAME Due to current photography limitations, the 24 month timeframe requirement on image capture has been removed. For 2020 only, there is NO restriction on the timeframe in which an image, or images in the case of composites, has been photographed. » MAJOR & CATEGORY PRIZES All major and category award winners receive a crystal trophy and a certificate. We look forward to announcing specific prizes in the next few months. » NEW AWARD - CATEGORY HIGHEST-SCORING ENTRY AWARD A new award to celebrate the entry that receives the highest score within each individual category. The winner is awarded the title, a certificate and digital decal to promote their win. » CALL FOR ENTRIES There are two components to the entry criteria and rules this year, ‘global rules’ that apply across all categories and entries; and ‘category specific’ rules. Some categories allow the use of more post- production techniques than others. The category specific rules are each divided into two sections, and sub-sections, depending on what camera and post-production techniques are permitted. » BOOK / EXPRESSIVE CATEGORY A minimum number of entries is required to make a category viable. Unfortunately with low book entries in recent years we are no longer able to offer the Book category. However, books can be entered into the new Expressive Category. The awards are all about encouraging creativity and innovation. We’re excited to announce the new Expressive Category where there are minimal limits to showcasing your creativity. This category allows the use of mixed media content and techniques in a way that brings new meaning and vision to the photographic medium. » CATEGORY ENTRY CRITERIA These have been updated to provide clarity and consistency when entering. » SUBJECT RULE Check out Page 15 for details on changes to the ‘Subject’ rule, with the emphasis on an entrant presenting uniquely different images within a submission. M A JOR AWA RD S NEW ZEALAND PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (NZPOY) The title of New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year (NZPOY) is a prestigious and coveted award, and winning it is an achievement of a lifetime. JAMES WHITE MEMORIAL AWARD The James White Award was originally an overseas study grant, established by the 1975 management committee, as a memorial to James and the work he did for the NZIPP. Not only was James a past NZIPP President, but he was also instrumental in setting up the awards programme. Although this is no longer a study grant, it remains a memorial award presented to a first time NZIPP entrant who achieves the highest aggregate score from their top four entries across any of the open categories. The winner will receive: » The James White Memorial Award trophy To be eligible for the James White Memorial Award the entrant: » Must be a professional photographer; » Must be a full financial member of the NZIPP (Affiliate or Accredited Member) at the opening of online registrations; » Must be a first-time entrant in the main categories of the awards (excluding the Student Category); » Must have entered a minimum of four entries, with the winner determined based on their top four entries. CURTIS / POOLE AWARD The Curtis / Poole Award started in 2009, in memory of two long-standing and colourful characters of the NZIPP, Brian Curtis and Richard Poole. Both were Honorary Fellows of the organisation and contributed much to both the Institute and New Zealand photography in general. Each year the Curtis / Poole Award is presented to the NZIPP region that scores the highest aggregate from their four top-performing members' highest-scoring entries, across any of the main categories. Fully financial NZIPP Accredited and Affiliate Members are eligible to represent their region for this award, excluding Student Category entrants. The representatives of the winning NZIPP region will each receive a certificate. JANAY JOHNSTONE MEMORIAL AWARD NZIPP member Janay Johnstone began her working life as a graphic designer, then launched her newborn photography career in 2015 after the birth of her own son. A talented photographer, Janay was a vivacious person with a heart of gold. She became part of the Heartfelt volunteer network, visiting hospitals to photograph babies who were seriously ill or had died during birth. Janay and her own unborn baby girl sadly passed away together on March 6, 2019. This award has been established by the NZIPP in conjunction with Janay’s husband Mark, and her family, to honour Janay. Finalists are determined based on the top three highest-scoring newborn entries in any of the main categories, excluding the Student Category. The entry that judges deem to best represent the criteria in 'What the judges are looking for' on page 7 is the award winner. Once a decision has been reached it is final. The winner will receive a certificate and be presented with the Janay Johnstone Memorial Award trophy. For the purpose of this award, a 'Newborn’ is defined as an infant up to three months of age; as calculated from the date of delivery if full term (37–42 weeks), or from the due date if premature. WORLD PHOTOGRAPHIC CUP The World Photographic Cup (WPC) was founded in 2013 as a cooperative effort by The Federation of European Photographers (FEP) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Its singular goal is to unite photographers in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. Professional photographic bodies from around the world are each year invited to select and enter images, in a range of genres, to represent their organisation and country. World Photographic Cup Entry Selection The NZIPP Team entries are selected from the top-scoring images from the current year's Iris Awards, and based on the WPC category and overall entry criteria. Where an entry does not meet this criteria, a prospective entrant chooses not to participate, or an entrant does not respond to an invitation within the specified time frame, the next eligible entry is considered. Three images per WPC category are entered. Only one entry per person per category is allowed, but an entrant may have an entry in multiple WPC categories. WPC entry selection, made by members of the NZIPP Honours Council and/or their nominated person(s), is final and no correspondence will be entered into. To be eligible to represent the NZIPP and NZ in the WPC, an entrant: » Must be a fully financial Accredited Professional Member of the NZIPP, at both the time of entry into the Iris Awards and the time of final WPC selection. » Must be a New Zealand citizen and reside permanently in New Zealand. » International photographers and students are NOT eligible for entry selection. REGIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (RPOY) The Regional Photographer of the Year (RPOY) award is presented to the highest-scoring photographer within each region at the annual Iris Professional Photography Awards. This is determined from the aggregate of an entrant’s top four highest-scoring entries. In the event two entrants have the same score, a series of countback processes will take place until an outright winner is determined. In order of consideration, this process is based on: » The highest final score from the tied entrants’ highest-scoring entry; » The highest final score of the tied entrants’ second highest-scoring entry; » The highest initial score of the tied entrants' highest-scoring entry; » The highest initial score of the tied entrants' second-highest scoring entry; If after each of these four steps the entrants are still tied, the award will be shared. At an appropriate regional event, determined by the Regional Representative, the winner will be presented with an engraved trophy and a certificate.
