Hayden Turner, Chairman and Co-Founder of Capital Kids Cricket "Welcome to the Moogsoft William Greaves Trophy finals. This is the biggest primary school indoor cricket league around. We started with only 6 schools in Westminster (in 2007) and now have a total of over 150 schools in 17 London boroughs taking part. The schools you see at Lords today have earned their places by winning their borough tournaments and semi-final rounds, so they are all already winners. The trophy is in memory of William Greaves, a founder of CKC 30 years ago who was instrumental in founding the league. Moogsoft, our sponsors are a leading technology company and are not only enabling this competition, but we hope, a long term partnership in years to come for all these children." Phil Tee, CEO and Chairman of Moogsoft “I remember as a young boy falling in love with cricket in the era of Botham/Lillee/Khan and Viv Richards. For an Englishman, the 149 not out of Ian Botham versus the Aussies at Headingley in 1981 remains one of the most exciting moments in sport! Ever since then it has been a passion of mine both as a player and a spectator, and I truly believe a metaphor for how to thrive in the hurly burly of the business world. It is sometimes said that uniquely amongst sports, cricket is simultaneously an individual and a team sport. As I have built software companies, ultimately success has come from both individual contributions and the team ethos as a whole. As a direct consequence of that, the opportunity to support the Capital Kids Cricket program and sponsor the "Moogsoft William Greaves” trophy is a huge honour. We depend intrinsically on the skills and talents of our kids, and this is a great way to nurture the next generation leaders. I hope that everyone involved has a fantastic time, and may the best team win!!!!” Shahidul Alam (Ratan), CEO of Capital Kids Cricket “At a time of growing concern about rising knife crime, the tournament run by the London-based charity Capital Kids Cricket (CKC) has a central theme of ‘teams not gangs’ and is an example of what can be achieved in inner city schools and communities. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the schools from the 17 London boroughs who took part this year in Britain’s biggest ever indoor cricket tournament for primary school children. Our biggest thanks go to the teachers and volunteers who have supported the competition by bringing their teams in to various venues across London and through the semi-final rounds. We couldn’t have come this far without the hard work of CKC coaches and staff. Thank you team CKC! Playing at Lords, the home of cricket is a dream for many across the globe. CKC’s vision is to inspire young people to take up this beautiful sport which can change lives, not only as an athlete, but also through the building of character, leadership skills and confidence. We would like to thank our funders and the MCC for giving this opportunity to many young people from state primary schools and communities. This ambitious project has been made possible by the unique sponsorship of a California-based IT and Artificial Intelligence company, Moogsoft, whose British founder and CEO, Phil Tee, is a passionate cricket fan keen to give hundreds of London children the chance to play the game he has loved since childhood. The winning school will receive the William Greaves Trophy, named after the cricket-loving writer and journalist who helped found CKC 30-years ago. Since then, more than 200,000 boys and girls at state schools and local communities in London and neighbouring counties, where cricket is not played, have been given the opportunity to play the game.”
COMPETITION BACKROUND The Moogsoft William Greaves Trophy, formerly the British Land Kids Cricket League was initially launched in 2007 to provide competition opportunities with a league format to state primary school children and to introduce a gender inclusive competition (our rules state that a minimum of 3 girls must play in each game). With the support of our competition sponsor Moogsoft, we have been able to expand the competition to 17 boroughs (Kingston upon Thames, Sutton, Merton, Lambeth, Croydon, Southwark, Greenwich, Barking & Dagenham, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Hackney, Haringay, Ealing Primary School were the 2017-18 William Greaves Trophy Winners Camden, Wesminster, and Ealing) with over 2,500 children taking part. This year over 425 matches are being played in the competition. William Greaves, (Bill to friends and colleagues) alongside Haydn Turner founded Capital Kids Cricket in 1989 and remained as a trustee for the charity until his death in 2017. Bill played an instrumental role in establishing the charity and securing its long term future through writing funding bids, using his skills as a journalist to seek out national publicity or promoting new ideas to get kids playing cricket. Following Bill’s death, we took the decision to rename the William Greaves, Co-founder of Capital Kids Cricket indoor primary school league in his honour. #MWGT 2019 FINALISTS Manor Primary School, representing the Borough of Tower Hamlets "I enjoy cricket because I can play with my teammates and if we win we get to go further on. I like competitions because they're fun and we get to play against other schools and I get to see how they bowl and bat" - Amida (Student) Grasmere Primary School, representing the Borough of Hackney "We had a really great day (in the semi-final) and found that we have some strengths in some areas but there are definitely some weaknesses we need to work on. I'm really delighted that the kids have been involved in cricket and we'll be able to take some of the things we learned to practice in the playground so that we'll be better prepared the next time!" - Bev Middle Park Primary School, representing the Borough of Greenwich "We have learned that the kids need to practice their bowling skills and become more confident in their ability to take part in sport. They have been working well as a team and supporting each other." - Miss Milly (Teacher) Furzedown Primary School, representing the Borough of Wandsworth
#MWGT 2019 FINALISTS Elmhurst Primary School, representing the Borough of Newham Manor Longbridge Primary School, representing the Borough of Barking & Dagenham Rhodes Avenue Primary School, representing the Borough of Haringay “Indoor cricket is a fantastic game as it allows all the children to be moving at once, it’s so fast-paced compared to the outdoor game and we find that a lot of kids actually prefer it. They get to work on their bowling, they get to work on different types of shots that they may not get to play in outdoor cricket, a lot more defensive and tactical shots, which we take back to the school. At our school a lot more of the students play indoor cricket as opposed to outdoor, because it is so much more fast-paced and it allows them to work more on their techniques.” - Adam (Sports co-ordinator Berrymede Primary School, representing the Borough of Ealing
