Wickham Parish Magazine October 2020 Ride & Stride – a postscript As a result of the pandemic this year’s Ride & Stride was a somewhat muted event, but nonetheless enjoyed by the small band constituting the St Nicholas Team as we walked through the high streets and back streets of Winchester. We found only five churches open, less than half our usual expectations, but that gave more time to stop and enjoy the welcome we received. We are very grateful for the generosity of our sponsors, who have remained undaunted by the current strictures. At the time of writing £300 has been raised, but the collection box is still open for contributions. After the addition of gift-aid we can expect that over £150 will be returned to our church by the Historic Churches Trust. Wickham Parish Magazine October 2020 Chilled Art Well our ten members were delighted to get back together at the Wickham Centre at the start of September. The Centre had put in a brilliant system of one way, socially distanced, scrupulously clean and yet a comfortable and supported system for our Group. Then the 'Rule of 6' came in after just two meetings. We decided to split the Group and have alternate weeks. The photos show the first week back before the new guidelines plus two completed paintings, an Owl by Liz and a Partridge by Tricia. The Centre has worked so hard to make this possible and my thanks go to all the staff but especially Kate, Jules and Ray. Patricia Fray 18

Wickham Parish Magazine October 2020 Who mentioned Christmas?! We know it’s a long way before Christmas but the Rotary Club of Fareham, along with other Rotarians across the UK, are actively involved in sending presents to disadvantaged children many miles away. This year, with the virus problems worldwide, these children particularly need an extra hand from caring people at Christmas. Children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania will receive shoeboxes from us, and YOU can help. Either make up the gift yourself in a shoebox for a boy or girl in one of four age groups, and the contents should be new. You can include items such as hats, gloves, scarves, socks, flannel, toothbrush and paste, soap, hairbrush and maybe a soft toy or educational book or game. Wickham Parish Magazine October 2020 Lions Message in a Bottle If you needed emergency help from paramedics, how would they quickly find out about your health condition, allergies or any medication you take? When time is saved, lives are saved. The Message in a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location – the fridge. When the emergency services see the special sticker by your front door they will know to look in your fridge for a green and white bottle which will contain your essential information and any repeat prescriptions. Another sticker goes on the outside of your fridge to make it clear where to look. The Message in a Bottle scheme is sponsored by the Lions Club International and is free to users. You can get a bottle from your local health centre, GP surgery or chemist. Alternatively, your Village Agent will be able to provide one. Village Agents are volunteers supported by Age Concern Hampshire, who help people to find information and services in their local community.
