There are a number of very serious buyers out there now and I am very happy to see such a positive spin in property activity, especially in these times. This is not limited to the security estates but, also in the surrounding suburbs. Genuine buyers are out and looking for a good deal. Whilst this is not always ideal for sellers, it does allow homeowners to move forward with their plans. One always has to consider your motivation for moving and weigh things up. The local rental market is very busy and we don’t expect a big upswing on the expat rental market for some time yet. The other optimistic news is that we are also selling to expats, so not only South African buyers. I do think that the need for security is paramount to most people and we are fortunate to live in these Estates. Call us to assist you with your property sale, purchase or, rental! Estate News FWG Game Drive and ‘Where’s Wally’! During the hard lockdown in Fourways Gardens Estate, it was heart-warming to see how the community cared for one another. O ne of the many initiatives that came from lockdown was the Sunday game drive. This was a suggestion from Chantel Venter and the idea was loved by the community at large! The little ones could not wait for Sunday, 4pm, to get in the car and drive around the estate and spot game. Some were even live, with the sleeping lioness and the snakes out for public viewing! After a few weeks of game viewing, Carey Bouwer contacted the HOA with the great idea of adding, ‘Where’s Wally’ to the game drive! We asked resident Martin Martinovic if he could help us bring a couple of Wally’s to life, which he did in record time. Fourways Gardens • 10 • July 2020

Estate News ART APPRECIATION AT FOURWAYS GARDENS BY FRANCESCA BEATTIE It is incredible to see how much talent we have in our Fourways Gardens community. Each month we get to showcase artists with such diverse artistic styles and skills. Our Artist for July, Ana Lampen, captures the essence of her subjects within her portraits. Do enjoy the Q&A. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: WHERE/HOW/ WHEN DID YOU START? I have always had a love of art. I didn’t actually do art in school, and when I went to university, I was ‘encouraged’ (persuaded) to go into the science field. That didn’t work out and I eventually summoned the courage to do art. I studied Fine Art many years ago, majoring in sculpture and printmaking. I did a bit of ceramics during this time too. I then took a break from art as I started a family, and became a full- time mom and housewife, and also assisted my husband in starting his business. For the next 20 years, I did very little in the field of art, although I found various creative outlets in doing odds and ends around the house (sewing, embroidery, knitting pillowcases and carpets, and even made a few lampshades!), but I always had the intention of taking it up again. And then . . . Lockdown. After two months of sitting with over 2 000 books in our garages, we decided to try and sell the books from our front garden pavement on a Sunday afternoon. Fourways Gardens was amazing and supported our endeavour. The response was incredible. People arrived all afternoon, suitably equipped with mask and sanitiser, and observing the 2m separation rule. The first Sunday was a resounding success with over R5 000 in takings and many, many more books donated from the Fourways Gardens families. We decided Fourways Gardens • 18 • July 2020
to hold another book sale the next Sunday and this was even more successful, raising over R6 000. It was such an eye-opener to see how supportive and incredible a community can be, when asked. We were still left with thousands of books after the two Sundays, so we decided to further spread the love and donated to three different charities: SPCA, The Hospice and Kids Haven. Here is a little more information about Jada from her mom, Kim Lubbe: “Jada-Ann is one incredible little girl who was diagnosed in 2012 with a terminal illness, ‘Vanishing White Matter Disease’, a rare and degenerative brain disease. There is currently no cure or treatment of this awful disease. Jada is losing her basic motor skills and is unable to run around. Unlike any other 10 year old, she now has to use a wheelchair for Jada-Ann assistance. This disease has already robbed her of her basic motor skills - the ability to walk, run and play like any other children her age; eat and drink; or go to the toilet unassisted. Without treatment or a cure, her abilities will only degenerate and get worse: loss of vision, epileptic seizures, vomiting, irritability, loss of bowel control, inability to move, depressed consciousness, comas and ultimately death. SUN VALLEY KENNELS & CATTERY KYALAMI There are only 3 known cases in South Africa and 250 worldwide. The average life expectancy of VWM patients is 5 - 10 years from onset of the disease. Few sufferers survive past this given period, there are only two that we are aware of worldwide. As VWM is so rare, there is no financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to research and develop a cure, so unfortunately there is minimal funding available to continue research. The only way the research can continue and progress is through funding from info@sunvalley.co.za 071 680 6139 wwww.sunvalley.co.za families affected by this disease – which, as we know, are not many. Therefore, it is critical that we are able to encourage and support ongoing research through fundraising initiatives. I hope this helps explain some of what is happening to Jada and her symptoms. For now, she is happy, in no pain and living as normal a life as possible, but we are in desperate need to raise funds and find a cure in order to see our child grow up and live a life she so rightfully deserves.” If you are interested in helping Jada, please donate to the following fund. All contributions will help us to help her. The Jada Foundation is a registered NPO and all donations can be tax exempt.
