Who Listens when Women Speak? For this week’s installment of MCC Toronto’s “Reel Human Rights” series, we’ll be pondering some of the questions and challenges posed by Emerald Fennel’s dark comedy the "Promising Young Woman." This provocative film, which earned Fennel a best original screenplay Oscar, offers viewers an unsettling critique of rape culture. Along the way, it explores themes of revenge, ambition, regret, forgiveness, consent, and violence. "Promising Young Woman" invites viewers to consider whether the lives, experiences, and stories of women matter as much as those of men in our society. It’s well-documented that, while many (and likely most) WOMEN as well as many men experience sexual assault at some point in their lives, few go on to report it. One of the biggest reasons for this discrepancy is that it’s so rare that assaulters face just consequences for their crimes. Perhaps the most pressing question this film asks is, who listens when women speak? This Sunday, Rev. June will share a word about how Scripture speaks to that question, and to many of the same themes as "Promising Young Woman." Tune in for worship Sunday at 11 AM on our YouTube channel, and look for the service content to be posted to watch later as well. Viewers of this film, especially victims of sexual assault, suicide, and domestic violence, could find "Promising Young Woman" triggering. These topics are covered throughout the film, making it a potentially tough watch for some viewers.

Last Sunday MCC Toronto celebrated International Family Equality Day. This Sunday, May 9 is Mother's Day. Let's dedicate this day to ALL the women and female-identifying individuals, including biological mothers and mothers-by-choice, that have cared for and inspired us. Let's take the sentiment of love and care that is rooted behind this day, and share our love and care with those around us. Sunday Service Musical Guests We asked this week's Offertory Performers to introduce themselves. Here's what they wrote! "Hi, we’re the Chois. Our band started in 2008 at a SingStar party in a North York condo. Usic sang “Take On Me” with sweaty enthusiasm and Karen couldn’t look away. His arms flared and her heart fluttered. Although Karen lost in a duel of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” forever started that night. Una joined five years later. She punctuates the group dynamic with high squeals, imaginative art creations, and interpretive dance moves that make you go hmmm. Una also serves as the costume director. She can pull together a scarf, underwear, and swimming goggles to make it fashun.
Three years later Etta completed the quartet. She uses her sweet voice to cheer others on, to point out the things you might not notice if you’re taller than 3.5 feet, and to ask for “bao-bao” (Mandarin for “hugs”). Etta works on her set-building skills as she experiments with the structural integrity of Lego. When we’re not enjoying music, you’ll find us making noise while throwing stones into Lake Ontario, eating Korean BBQ at home, or snuggling on the couch with our pup Arlo. Usic restores BMWs at his shop in Newmarket and plans the family canoe-camping trips (follow @totalmotorwerkes). Karen is a life coach for daughters of immigrants and uses tarot cards for self-reflection (follow @karenchoi.co)."
