Where and when to dive South Africa Finding your dream dive destination and making sure your trip coincides with the best time of year can be a challenge, and every diver knows how many endless hours research can go into planning the perfect trip. To make it that little bit easier in 2020 – we’ve created a yearly guide of world-class dive destinations in South Africa, just waiting to be explored.

Aliwal Shoal Best time to visit The Aliwal Shoal is a rocky reef which is the remains of an ancient sand dune approximately 5 kilometres off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The reef is inhabited by many kinds of hard and soft corals, out of this world wrecks and baited shark dives. Mantas, Whale Shark and Kingfish season: February – April Humpback Whale season: May – July Raggies ( Ragged-Tooth Shark) season: June - November Recently they have been spotted earlier and seems to be staying for longer periods at a time than usual. Tiger Shark season: November - March Tiger sharks prefer the warmer waters in these months. Seeing one of these guys on a shark dive can make any divers day. Aliwal also have our Humpback Whales and Bull Sharks that passes through throughout the year. All year round sightings: Oceanic Black Tips, White Tip reef sharks, this is what forms the famous all year shark dives and on occasion the Bull Shark and Tiger Shark will come visit on those dives. Apart from all the seasonal sightings, Aliwal Shoal provides so much more. From Corals, Turtles, Potato Bass to Pipe Fish. Do not forget the Mantas, Parrot fish, Puffers, Eels, Wrasses, Trigger Fish and so much more.
The Sardine Run Best time to visit June / July 2020 ✓ Group #1~ 16th June – 23rd June 2020 ✓ Group #2 ~ 21st June – 28th June 2020 – FULLY BOOKED ✓ Group #3 ~ 27th June – 4th July 2020 – FULLY BOOKED ✓ Group #4 ~ 1st July – 8th July 2020 ✓ Group #5~ 3rd July – 10th July 2020 ✓ Group #6~ 6th July – 13th July 2020 ✓ Group #7 ~ 8th July – 15th July 2020 ✓ Group #8~ 13th July – 20th July 2020 Occurring off the coast of Southern Africa every May through July, the Sardine Run South Africa, sees billions of Southern African pilchard, Sardinops sagax, spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank before moving northwards along the east coast of South Africa. The sheer number of sardines that spawn and migrate call a variety of apex predators to the area every year in a sardine feeding frenzy that is both grisly and gorgeous; a once in a lifetime visual spectacular. Sightings - Numerous Shark species, - Bait balls of sardines, - Humpback whales, - Super pods of Dolphins, - Killer Whales / Orcas, - Cape Gannet.
Sodwana Bay Best time to visit Sodwana Bay is a fantastic, year-round dive destination that lies within the boundaries of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These reefs are of the most southerly coral reefs in the world and are fed by warm water carried southward by the Agulhas Current. The fact that no silt-bearing rivers are close to the area ensures that the corals are pristine and the visibility good. Whaleshark season: December – February Humpback Whale season: June - October Ragged-tooth Shark season: December - February Nesting Leatherback and Loggerhead Turtle season: December - February All year round sightings: Apart from all the seasonal sightings, Sodwana Bay provides so much more. From over 1100 different fish species, Corals, Turtles, Potato Bass to Pipe Fish. Do not forget the Mantas, Parrot fish, Puffers, Eels, Wrasses, Trigger Fish and so much more.
Cape Town Best time to visit Cape Town is a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, on a peninsula beneath the imposing Table Mountain. Cape town is known for its incredible wine farms, food culture and amazing scenery. Best visibility is between March and September (from autumn to spring) Great White Shark season: February – September Few things compare to the adrenalin rush and exhilaration one gets from being face to face with a 4 m Great White Shark, especially when they curiously cruise right up to the cage and eye you within kissing range! All year round sightings: Seal and Kelp Forest Dive: On this dive you have a good possibility of encountering the Sevengill shark, Wreck Diving: The Cape waters are littered with thousands of shipwrecks, recent and ancient, on the shore and in deep water. Reef Diving: From majestic kelp forests to cold-water coral gardens and deep reefs. The reefs allow you to do really good multi-level dives, with depths between 30m and 10m. Shark Dives: The Blue sharks are more commonly seen on these trips, You can encounter several other special creatures on our trips out to “the deep”
