Museum News Following the refurbishment of our White Gallery earlier in the year, it is now the turn of the Landing Gallery to receive some much needed maintenance. We are working to keep the building open, but it does mean that our Picture Gallery will be closed to protect artworks from dust. We will be re-opening the space with a bang in the New Year. We also wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for all your kind donations, both small and large. The money you donate when you visit helps us to create fantastic exhibitions like ‘Becoming George’ and conserve the collections for future generations. Lunchtime Talks Our lunchtime talks programme provides the perfect opportunity to meet with others and learn about new topics. Friday 29 November Professor Ruth Livesey – George Eliot George Eliot and Vincent Van Gogh: Everyday Life in Colour Professor Ruth Livesey, Royal Holloway, University of London Not many people know that George Eliot’s fiction had a huge influence on the work of Vincent Van Gogh. When he sent a copy of his painting, Bedroom at Arles, to his sister he said he was trying to paint something of Eliot’s novel, Felix Holt, the Radical. This talk will use Van Gogh’s paintings to look again at George Eliot’s places. What do these two great artists share in the way they depict everyday life? What do they do in their work to make everyday places and ordinary people seem full of radiant colour and significance – and why does that matter now, more than ever? Friday 13 December Margaret Eddershaw – From George to George A one-woman poetic play about the relationship between George Eliot and her partner, George Henry Lewes. It takes the form of a dream-like dialogue between Eliot and the ancient Greek philosopher, Theophrastus, whose book, Characters, inspired her last book, The Impressions of Theophrastus Such. The piece is accompanied by an original piano score by Robert Webb. Image credit: Margaret Eddershaw 8 What’s On November 2019 - February 2020
