Young Explorers Half Term Discovery Days: Hands-on activities - FREE* Comics in the Glass Tue, 26 - Thu, 28 October 2021, 11.00-15.00 Create your own comic and mask based on the pilgrim stories in our medieval stained glass windows! Join celebrated graphic novel artist and illustrator, Zara Slattery, for this fun-filled event. And don’t forget to take your creations home with you! *Precinct entrance charges apply. Young Explorers Gregory’s Creature Safari – FREE* From Mon, 18 October, all day. Safari maps available from Visitor Centre. Did you know that dragons lurk in the Cathedral? In fact, there are lots of animals and fantastical creatures to discover in the Cathedral’s stained glass, carved stone, and amazing objects. Gregory Gargoyle has chosen 10 of his favourite animals for you to find - including birds, cats, dogs, and even wyverns!
Gregory’s Hidden History Hunt – FREE* Gregory Gargoyle loves to discover things about the Cathedral, and he has hidden 10 of his favourite facts around The Precincts for you to find. In our outdoor Precincts trail, use Gregory’s map to uncover each of these facts and use them to answer Gregory’s Cathedral quiz. Everyone who completes the Safari or Hunt correctly and in full, can return it to the Shop to claim a free Canterbury Cathedral pencil. Ready to get started? Music From world-class jazz in the 11th- century Crypt, to concert performances of the Cathedral’s formidable, newly- restored organ, our bold new Autumn music programme is bound to excite. Organ recitals Two organ concerts given by the Cathedral’s resident organists. £15.53 per ticket. Booking optional Adrian Bawtree Fri, 15 October 2021, 19.30 Acting Assistant Organist Adrian Bawtree also teaches the organ at The King’s School, St Edmund’s School, and privately. He conducts the Canterbury Singers and Cantores Dominicae, and is a composer. His recital programme will feature music by J.S. Bach, Louis Vierne, Guy Bovet, and C.H.H. Parry.
Passacaglias, Chorales and Riffs: Jamie Rogers Fri, 19 November 2021, 19.30 An established jazz pianist, Jamie enjoys a varied musical career. He is a professional church musician; working as the Assistant Director of Music at St Marylebone Parish Church, London and as Acting Second Assistant Organist at Canterbury Cathedral. Jamie’s performance will include pieces by Buxtehude, Liszt, and Handel. Jazz in the Crypt Reimagined: David Rees-Williams and Jamie Rogers Fri, 12 November 2021, 19:30 £12.53 per ticket. Booking optional This recital presents an opportunity to hear the works of Buxtehude, J.S. Would you enjoy singing in professional concerts and recordings, taking part in unforgettable international tours, and performing as part of a team alongside other like-minded children? We are seeking boys in Year 3 and 4, with a love of singing, to audition this November to join our world-famous choir in 2022. Generous educational scholarships available. Talks Clagett Auditorium, Cathedral Lodge £8 Friends, £10 non-members Saint Theodore of Tarsus: The Unexpected Archbishop of Canterbury Mon, 18 October 2021, 10.30 Christopher Pullin, Canon Treasurer of Hereford Cathedral, will reveal more about Saint Theodore, who reshaped, reinvigorated, and educated the English Church in the wake of the Synod of Whitby. Medieval Pilgrimage: Faith, fun, or folly? Thu, 21 October 2021, 10.30 Nicholas Orme, emeritus professor at Exeter University and an honorary canon of Truro Cathedral, will discuss who went on medieval pilgrimages and why their motives for doing so attracted critisism at the time. Heraldry in the Cloister Mon, 1 November 2021, 14.30 Dr Paul Fox, author of Great Cloister: A Lost Canterbury Tale will present the results of his study of the heraldry, genealogy, and history of the Canterbury Cathedral Cloister.
Family Advent Wreath Workshop Sat, 27 November 2021, 10.00-14.00 Community Studio £10 per family group. Children must be accompanied at all times. Come along and make your own Advent wreath with The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral. All materials will be provided, including greenery from the Precinct gardens. Be Still and Know: Advent Quiet Day Sat, 4 December 2021, 10.00-16.00 This is a free event but donations to The Friends are welcomed. Join the Reverend Dr Emma Pennington, Canon Missioner, for a day of reflection, stillness, and prayer as we prepare for Advent and Christmas. NEW for 2021 Viewing Gallery: Crafting the Cathedral A must for model enthusiasts and fans of architecture, this exhibition features exquisite 1:720 scale replicas of famous cathedrals, crafted in cardboard and wood, between 1840-1850, by model maker William Gorringe. Water Tower Corridor: Chalices, Flagons and Patens Church practice through the centuries has been full of variety, and this can be seen in the objects used in worship, from simple communion cups to decorated chalices. Water Tower: Monastic Life In this interactive exhibition in the Cathedral’s newly restored Water Tower, discover what day-to-day life was like for Canterbury’s monks.

Available 12.00 Tue,Thu, Sat † Join us as we travel through some of our public gardens and discover how these spaces, created over centuries, are still used and tended by our gardening team today. This tour is entirely outside. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear. To book, please go to the tours desk in the Cathedral, or speak to one of our Shepherds. † In November,The Precincts Tour and Monks Maladies and Gardens will be replaced with an indoor stained glass tour. Mini talks – FREE* Enjoy a bite-size exploration of the Cathedral’s history with a free 15-minute mini talk from our volunteer guides. Whether it’s WWI memorials, Henry IV, the Chapter House, the Great Cloister, Thomas Becket or something else entirely, our knowledgeable guides will share with you fascinating insights and little-known facts about their favourite aspects of the Cathedral. Mini talks start at quarter past the hour, and the meeting point is at the west end of the Nave, near the entrance. *Precinct entrance charges apply.
