DAY 1 Tuesday 3rd November, 2020 MELBOURNE TO TORQUAY With personal pickup from home, we head straight to our first stop Werribee Open Range Zoo. The zoo has a special focus on African animals so we’ll board our special safari bus to take a tour amongst some of the world’s iconic grassland animals. The magnificent wildlife, including rhinos, giraffes, zebras and antelopes will seem almost touchable. We’ll have lunch in Werribee, then head off to visit the RAAF Museum Point Cook- the birthplace of the Australian Flying Corps and the Royal Australian Air Force. The museum tells one of Australia's most important aviation stories, that of the second oldest air force in the world. Our guided tour will give us a unique insight into Australian aviation history, the Air Force and the RAAF Base Point Cook. OVERNIGHT: Peppers the Sands Resort, TORQUAY DAY 2 Wednesday 4th November, 2020 GEELONG This morning we spend some time in Geelong and have arranged a guided tour at 10am of the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. Sophisticated and technology-rich, this world-class facility is designed to meet the expectations of 21st century public library users, providing contemporary and innovative library and information services. Within the iconic domed building, there are five public levels – all beautiful, inspiring and inclusive spaces for reading, studying, meeting, discovery and fun. We are then introduced to a local guide that will hop onboard our coach for a more extensive tour of Geelong city. He will also give us some ideas of how we can spend our free time this afternoon. We say goodbye to our guide and make our way to our lunch venue, right on the water at the Geelong Boat House – just perfect. This afternoon we’re off to do a little picking and poking for a bargain at the Amazing Mill Markets. There are more than 60 stalls here offering a selection of vintage clothes, vintage furniture, collectables, antiques, memorabilia, home decor, fine china, art, glass, coins, jewellery, books and records, to name a few! It’s under cover and is open 7 days a week. At an agreed time later this afternoon we return to Torquay. OVERNIGHT: Peppers the Sands Resort, TORQUAY
DAY 3 Thursday 5th November, 2020 THE Q TRAIN Queenscliff is a classic seaside holiday destination and is where we spend most of the morning at leisure. Surrounded on three sides by water Queenscliff was once a defence post around 1880 and was the most heavily armed fort in the Southern Hemisphere. Today the real charm can be felt with the historical buildings featuring the magnificent Vue Grand Hotel dominating the commercial centre. We could pop into one of the very well presented museums or simply take a wander, admiring its charm and maybe getting a cuppa from one of the many local cafes. Late morning we board The Q-Train for our special 6 course luncheon, a real treat today. As the train whistle sounds our journey begins travelling along the beautiful Bellarine Railway, offering views of the rolling hills of the Bellarine Peninsula. Between the set courses of our degustation menu we are free to walk around the train, or to enjoy a relaxing drink in the Club Loco Bar Car. Feel free to explore the train and soak up the rich history as we twist around the tracks. The Q Train will pause for a period of time at Suma Park Historic Homestead, then runs alongside beautiful Swan Bay, with another stop to enjoy views while we dine and then continue back to Queenscliff. Your final dessert course is served on our return trip from Queenscliff to Drysdale, and as The Q Train closes its return journey, enjoy a final cup of tea or coffee. Our coach will be waiting for us and we return to our hotel to complete a memorable day. As we may not really need any dinner this evening we are free to choose if we dine in house or not. Dinner at own expense and arrangement OVERNIGHT: Peppers the Sands Resort, TORQUAY
DAY 4 Friday 6th November, 2020 TORQUAY TO MELBOURNE It’s been a lovely break and now it’s time to wend our way home, but not before we make a last stop. Leaving Torquay, we drive through Bells Beach, the main surf beach and venue for many National and International Surfing Titles, heading inland to visit a Polwarth sheep and wool growing enterprise run by Wendy & David Dennis. Their historic Birregurra property ‘Tarndwarncoort’, was established in 1840, in Western Victoria. Polwarth sheep were developed by Richard Dennis at Tarndwarncoort in 1880, by crossing Saxon Merino sheep from Tasmania with Victorian Lincoln sheep. This progeny was then joined back to the Merino and breed to a fixed type. These sheep were named after the local electorate of Polwarth and are Australia's first breed of sheep. It will be an interesting visit with a short tour followed by lunch. From here we make our way back to Melbourne to complete a truly fabulous short break away! “... The word Tarndwarncoot is based on the ancient Gulidjan language, used by the Australian indigenous people to describe the landscape the property sits upon...” Dennis family
