Bits and pieces We are part of a global federation, “One L’Arche”, and this year L’Arche International has asked Australian communities to raise funds for L’Arche Zimbabwe, a community that relies completely on donations and whatever they can earn themselves. At our last Solidarity night we saw a short film that gave us a glimpse of their vibrant community. Our members very quickly came up with an impressive list of fundraising ideas! (Watch this space!) Here is the link to that film https://drive.google.com/ file/d/15z1tE_kt2BKI8wPQqGYIrx7oIr25iEfm/view L'Arche Australia – Share A Meal L'Arche Australia invites us to Share a Meal and raise some much needed funds for L'Arche. You can invite friends over to your place and talk about L'Arche. You can do a staff meeting over lunch, morning tea with your church friends – and many other options. Contact Eileen Glass at fundraising@larche.org.au if you would like to host a meal. You will be mailed a kit to help you with your event. You and your guests can choose where to direct any funds you raise – for example, to L’Arche Beni-Abbes in Hobart, or to L’Arche Australia (priorities include assisting a new community get off the ground, or supporting the National Listening and Speaking Group, etc) or to L’Arche International (to assist a community in Zimbabwe). Whilst we do receive funding from government sources, some of our costs are not covered by those funds. We therefore continue to rely on the generosity of donors and are grateful for any contribution, whether large or small. If you have any fundraising ideas or would be willing to get involved with fundraising please let us know. Welcome to the Charter Process…all in the boat together. You may be aware that L’Arche International is inviting each of us to contribute to our new Charter. The Charter says what is important to us as we create home and community together. It helps us to reflect on what we have lived, what we are currently living and our dreams for the future. This will be a 3 year process… and it has already begun with National Resource People, Claire Lawler and Cindy Treanor, attending Charter formation in Trosly in May 2019. They will be training the local Charter Resource People from all the communities and projects in Australia and New Zealand at the National Listening and Speaking Group in October 2019. After the training they will return to their home community or project ready and able to lead the process. So it is time to get ready!!!!!! As part of this process we want to… Discover and honour our story, our vision and our inspiration. Find ways to share this so everyone can understand our shared values and vision. We need to make sure that.. It is a spiritual process. We don’t only want to use words to share our stories and ideas- we want to make sure that everyone is included. L’Arche International has made some resources that we can use to help us to include everyone in a creative way. Your Charter Resource people will help you to learn how to use these resources. We want to include this in the usual things that we do in our everyday lives and in the life of our community. So now is the time for you to start thinking about…What are the usual ways you spend time together in your community where you could pray, think and share about what is important to you? YOU COULD CHOOSE SOME DATES OF USUAL GATHERINGS, OR MEETINGS, OR TIMES YOU SPEND TOGETHER AND MARK THEM IN YOUR DIARY/CALENDER SO YOU KNOW THAT YOU WILL MAKE THE TIME TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS PROCESS. We also want to make sure that all the people who are interested in our community or project get to contribute. So welcome to the First stage of the Charter Process - May 2019 - April 2020 (12 months) We are going to look at our experiences of community life and reread them to determine what gives us life and what doesn’t. We all need to submit our ideas to L’Arche International by March 2020. You can look forward to some more information about this exciting process in our next newsletter or information sheet. 5

The Art of Kathy Cantrell I love to discover the passions of people – those things that really engage us and bring us life. It was so inspiring to visit Kathy’s house (the one she shares with Sylvia, Louise, Toumani, Jesse and quite a few Assistants) a couple of weeks ago. We shared a beautiful meal around the table and talked, joked and sang for quite a while. One thing I was keen to do while there, was to check out Kathy’s artwork. Above: Harry the Triceratops. Earlier in the year had she created a Below: Rosie the Velociraptor. beautiful L’Arche focussed drawing to present to Mary Langdon. This gift for our new Community Leader made me want to see some more. The conversation finally came around to art and Kathy talked about the metallic pencils she uses and her love for the strong colours they produce. Art making has been important to Kathy from the earliest times and as you can see from the accompanying photos, Kathy has a real gift of capturing the quality – the essence – of the subjects she draws. Obviously many hours of quiet work go into each piece. Kathy also has a love for music and the bass guitar is her favourite instrument. Here is a great shot of Kathy leading the singalong playing my guitar like a double bass. It’s an old guitar and this was the first time that it has experienced this particular musical treatment – but I have a hunch it’s going to happen again. She told us she’s “nuts for music – but not heavy metal. I love the 60’s – Normie Rowe and Colleen Hewett”. Kathy is a great appreciator of life and a born entertainer.
