COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT Scouts FAMILY SEEKING SENIOR ASSISTANCE: We hope that this update finds you all staying safe and healthy. In the ongoing Family seeking HCA or equivalent to assist Senior in effort to flatten the curve, we are continuing to hold all of SW Calgary with daily living activities such as, meal our Group’s meetings online. preparation, bathing, medications, companionship, Registration is ongoing and you can sign up at www.scouts.ca. and light housekeeping. Approximately 21 hours per Even though the meetings are all held online for now, we feel week. Send resume with cover letter stating salary the kids really enjoy taking part. We have received excellent expectations to care4familybyhugs@gmail.com. feedback from the parents, so we feel we are on the right track to keeping the kids occupied and encouraging them to do their best. Yes, it is different, but it is still fun, and the kids continue to interact with their friends and learn new skills in the process. We have a great group of dedicated Scouters leading this challenge and I need to send out a huge thank you to all of them, and their dedication to our youth. The Scouters work tirelessly, and we need to remember they are volunteering their own time to the Group. The materials needed for each meeting are bought, prepared, and dropped off to the kids before their meetings so they have them when they take part in the online sessions. The online sessions take hours of pre-planning. I truly feel there is a special place in heaven for all of them. Dear Friends, we are in need of your ongoing support to our Group. We have no other way to raise funds at the moment than to ask if you have any bottles to donate, call Tim at 403-2521-4878 and he can arrange a no-contact pick up from you at your convenience. All funds will go directly to supporting our local Group. We still need funds to purchase materials to run our online programs and to build up our account for future in-person activities when we get the go ahead to do so. We truly appreciate your donations, and we acknowledge that we could not run our programs without your support. We thank all of you for the kindness you show us in your donations. In closing, please remember to show love and kindness to each other, do a good turn for others when you can, shovel a neighbour’s walk, do a shopping run for a friend, be an ear for someone needing a bit of support, if you shop, try to support local. Thank you all for being here for us. “Sometimes we need someone to simply be there…. not to fix anything or do anything in particular, but just to let us feel we are supported and cared about”. 4 M A R C H 2021 I Call 403-720-0762 for advertising opportunities
BRAESIDE STORIES IN PICTURES Alberta Travels Our Trip to Medicine Hat by Tammy Yee, a writer living in Calgary. When my husband and I told family and friends we were going to Medicine Hat for a few days in September, the most common response was silence. I presume people thought, “Why?”. We wanted to see something new, while staying in Alberta due to COVID-19 recommendations. A search for Alberta’s hidden gems led us to Red Rock Coulee, a short drive south of Medicine Hat. The photos of this other-worldly place looked amazing. The red rocks are sandstone concretions (new word to me!), formed inside layers of sedimentary rock. Over time, the surrounding sedimentary rock erodes and exposes the harder concretions. Once the concretions are exposed, they weather over time, so some are whole, and others are broken. We reached the coulee around noon. I was enamoured with taking shadow pictures. Brent and I explored the area separately for an hour or so. Shortly after starting for Medicine Hat, we stopped so Brent could photograph an antelope. I looked at my pictures and remembered that I wanted us to take some shadow pictures together. Later, at Police Point Park in Medicine Hat, we chatted with the conservation person in the Nature Centre about our visit to Red Rock Coulee. He asked us if we saw or heard any rattlesnakes - we did not. He said he sees or hears We went to the Medalta Potteries museum, a former snakes every time he goes to the coulee. He recommended industrial ceramic manufacturing complex. While a self- walking down further into the valley the next time for a guided option is available, the guided tour was fabulous, different perspective of the area. and I highly recommend it. In COVID-19 times, they limit the number of people on the tour to five (they normally have 20 to 30 people) so this is a much more intimate experience. If your group is slightly larger, call them instead of booking online. The gift shop includes new pieces made today using the same equipment as when the factory was in operation, along with pieces made in the past. Walking around downtown, we saw mural art from the 2019 festival. We sampled liquids from the distillery and the breweries in The Hat. There is a kombucha brewery in town too, with the best kombucha I’ve ever tasted. We had a great couple of days in The Hat and I’d go back to do it all again. On the way home, we stopped at Dinosaur Provincial Park and the Brooks Aqueduct. And a side trip to the distillery in Rolling Hills for pizza on their fabulous patio.
