West Coast Bowling Tour 2022 Proposed Itinerary 11 October – 22 October Day 1: Tuesday 11 October 2022 ARRIVE NELSON (D) Arrive Nelson (flight TBA). With a sunny maritime climate in the Nelson regions, there's an unmistakable freshness to the land and the ocean. Local producers and an artisan culture combine to create confident and uncluttered cuisine, matched with wonderfully crafted wines. Upon arrival into Nelson, we take an orientation tour of the city including Tahunanui, Moncrief Rise for panoramic views across Tasman Bay, Nelson Cathedral and the heritage precinct of South Street before checking in to our accommodation. This evening we enjoy a welcome dinner in the hotel restaurant. Accommodation: Rutherford Hotel, Nelson – 3 nights Day 2: Wednesday 12 October 2022 NELSON – ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK – NELSON (B) This morning we travel to Kaiteriteri, gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. On arrival we depart on a Sea Shuttle catamaran for a half day cruise along the stunning shoreline of Abel Tasman National Park. En route learn about the history of the park and view the famous Split Apple Rock, a fur seal colony, and the golden beaches and crystal-clear waters of Abel Tasman National Park. Afterwards return to Nelson on the coach. Remainder of the day at leisure. Dinner tonight is at your leisure. Day 3: Thursday 13 October 2022 NELSON (BD) This morning after breakfast we visit Pic’s Peanut Butter World and hear the Pic’s story. Learn all about the peanuts and watch what happens on the factory floor then finish the tour with a tasting of the product itself – a delicious highlight! Afterwards we will have some time for lunch (own cost) before we play bowls this afternoon. This afternoon we will arrive at a local bowls club for an afternoon of bowls (club TBC). Tonight, we will enjoy dinner together in the hotel restaurant.
Day 4: Friday 14 October 2022 NELSON –KAIKOURA (BD) Departing Nelson today we travel to Picton. On arrival enjoy some time at leisure to purchase lunch (own cost). Depart Picton in the early afternoon onboard the Coastal Pacific Train to Kaikoura. Pass through the grape growing region of Marlborough then travel along a thin ledge of land pinned between the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged Kaikoura Ranges. Kaikōura has a rich history and culture, and its Maori heritage is reflected in the name as when an early Maori explorer arrived in the area many hundreds of years ago tired and hungry, he found an abundance of crayfish (lobster) and named the area Kai – food Koura – crayfish. On arrival we will check into our accommodation and then we will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Accommodation: The White Morph, Kaikoura – 1 night Day 5: Saturday 15 October 2022 KAIKOURA – CHRISTCHURCH (BD) This morning report to the ‘Whaleway Station’ for a Whale Watching Tour on a purpose-built chase boat. There is a 95% record of sighting sperm whales year- round. New Zealand’s continental shelf is narrowest off Kaikoura - the bottom plunges to over 1600 metres within 5 kms of the coast. The upwelling of nutrient rich waters supports an abundant and diverse fauna of vertebrates, fish and marine mammals. In addition to whales, you may also see Dusky Dolphins and the rare Hector Dolphins, seals, sea lions and a large variety of seabirds including the smallest of the penguins, the little Blue Penguin. Back on dry land we re-join the road south following the indentations of a wild coastline affording constantly changing seascapes as it skirts an exposed rock-strewn shore at the foot of the Seaward Kaikoura Mountains. There are spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Short tunnels are a feature of the journey as engineers strove to find a way through and round the bluffs. At Oaro the road turns inland and quickly climbs into the Hunderlee Ranges then descends into the rolling farmland of North Canterbury passing through several small country towns before entering the northern suburbs of Christchurch. Tonight, we will dine together in the hotel restaurant. Accommodation: Heartland Hotel Cotswold – 2 nights Day 6: Sunday 16 October 2022 CHRISTCHURCH (B) This morning we depart on a sightseeing tour of the city. Highlights include the River Avon, the Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery; the ‘Cardboard Cathedral’; Bridge of Remembrance; the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial and the Art Deco New Regent Street.
Afterwards enjoy a 30 minute Punting in the Park service by knowledgeable and professional boatmen, in straw boaters and traditional dress, giving an informative and entertaining guide to the Avon River and the Botanic Gardens. There will be some time at leisure before our afternoon of bowls. After lunch (own cost) we will arrive at a local bowling club for a game of bowls (TBC). Dinner tonight will be at your leisure. Day 7: Monday 17 October 202 CHRISTCHURCH – GREYMOUTH (BD) After breakfast today we depart Christchurch onboard the Tranz Alpine Train to Greymouth for a scenic rail journey through the heart of the mighty Southern Alps to Greymouth on the West Coast. Cross the fertile Canterbury Plains then wind through the gorge of the Waimakariri River and climb into Arthur's Pass National Park, a base for alpine sports, trekking and hunting. From the valleys of the snow-capped mountains, descend into the lush rainforests of Westland, to conclude the journey at the town of Greymouth. On arrival into Greymouth enjoy a 45-minute guided tour around the home of Monteith’s. You'll learn the heritage, the craft of beer making, & what goes into a special brew. Finish up with a tasting lesson & get to pour your very own beer & drink 3 more. Afterward the brewery tour we will enjoy a group dinner at Monteith’s. Accommodation: Kingsgate Hotel, Greymouth – 2 nights Day 8: Tuesday 18 October 2022 GREYMOUTH (BD) Today visit Shantytown Heritage Park, a recreated gold-rush town which tells stories of fortitude and pioneering spirit through a fascinating mix of experience and displays. Your visit includes a short steam train trip through lush native rain forest along the Infants Creek Tram line which follows an original sawmill tram track of the 1800’s. See the old-style steam driven mill, visit Chinatown, pan for gold and explore the village with shops and buildings featuring stories of life in the early years of colonisation both on the West Coast and New Zealand. Afterwards there will be time for lunch (own cost). This afternoon enjoy a game of bowls with a local bowling club (TBC). Dinner tonight will be at the hotel restaurant.
Day 9: Wednesday 19 October 2022 GREYMOUTH – WESTPORT (BD) Today we depart Greymouth, and we will have time to visit the Pancake Rocks on our way to Westport. These sedimentary rocks have been hammered by the sea, and wind erosion forming layered rocks giving a look of a large stack of pancakes. There is a 20-minute loop walk here for those wishing to view these fascinating rocks. Afterwards we continue our drive to Westport. We will stop for lunch (own cost) before our game of bowls this afternoon. This afternoon we will have a game of bowls at a local bowling club (TBC). Afterwards we will return to the hotel where will have dinner as a group. Accommodation: Westport Motor Hotel, Westport – 1 night Day 10: Thursday 20 October 2022 WESTPORT – NELSON (BD) Today as we depart Westport and make our way to Nelson. We travel on State Highway 6 through Murchison before we reach Nelson Lakes. Nelson Lakes National Park is the northernmost part of the Southern Alps. From every angle you will find you need to stop and photograph the impressive native beech forests, river valleys, glacial lakes and craggy peaks. We will take the opportunity of stopping at Lake Rotoiti, to enjoy a lunch (own cost) taking in the stunning views of the lake stretching all the way to snow- capped mountains in the distance. After lunch, we journey on to Nelson. Tonight, we will enjoy dinner at our hotel. Accommodation: Rutherford Hotel, Nelson – 2 nights Day 11: Friday 21 October 2022 NELSON AT LEISURE (B) Today is at your leisure in Nelson. Dinner tonight is at your leisure. Day 12: Saturday 22 October 2022 DEPART NELSON (B) After breakfast today we depart the hotel for our departure flight and transfer to Nelson Airport (TBA). Terms & Conditions: A single supplement of $1200.00 available. To confirm your place on this tour a $500.00 deposit is required at the time of booking fully refundable to 31 March 2022, from 1 April non-refundable. Dates for Coastal Pacific Train/Tranz Alpine Train could alter, or may not run due to Covid 19 restrictions out of our control – however coach alternative will be provided. Subject to a minimum of 17 passengers to go ahead.
