We acknowledge with thanksgiving that we gather to worship on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish People. The Great Vigil of Easter 7 pm Saturday 3 April 2021 Gathering of the Community The Service of Light In the darkness, fire is kindled. Priest Dear friends in Christ, on this most holy night, when our Lord Jesus Christ passed from death to life, the Church invites her children throughout the world to come together in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of the Lord. We remember his death and resurrection by hearing his word and celebrating his mysteries; we are confident that we shall share his victory over death and live with him for ever in God. Let us pray. Father, we share in the light of your glorythrough your Son, the light of the world. Sanctify this new fire, and inflame us with new hope. Purify our minds by this Easter celebration and bring us one day to the feast of eternal light. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Liturgy of the Word Priest Dear friends in Christ, let us now listen attentively to the word of God, recalling how God saved all people throughout history and in the fullness of time, sent Jesus the Son to be our Redeemer.
First Reading Genesis 1:1-2:4a Silence Prayer Almighty and eternal God, you created all things in wonderful beauty and order. Help us now perceive how still more wonderful is the new creation, by which in the fullness of time you redeemed your people through the sacrifice of our Passover, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Hymn God, Whose Almighty Word Second Reading Exodus 14:10-31, 15:20-21 Silence Prayer God of steadfast love, your wonderful deeds of old shine forth even to our own day. By the power of your mighty arm you once delivered your chosen people from slavery under Pharaoh, to be a sign for us of the salvation of all nations by the water of baptism. Grant that all the peoples of the earth may be numbered among the offspring of Abraham, and rejoice in the inheritance of Israel. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn How Firm a Foundation Third Reading Isaiah 55:1-11 Silence Prayer O God, by the power of your Word you have created all things, and by your Spirit you renew the earth. Give now the water of life to those who thirst for you, that they may bring forth abundant fruit in your glorious kingdom. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4
Fourth Reading Ezekiel 37:11-14 Silence Prayer Living God, by the Passover of your Son you have brought us out of sin into righteousness and out of death into life. The Collect of the Day Priest Eternal Giver of life and light, this holy night shines with the radiance of the risen Christ. Renew your Church with the Spirit given to us in baptism, that we may worship you in sincerity and truth, and shine as a light in the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now for ever. Amen. Hymn The Trumpets Sound, the Angels Sing Reading Romans 6:3-11 Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All Thanks be to God. Psalm 114 Hallelujah! When Israel came out of Egypt, * the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech, Judah became God’s sanctuary * and Israel his dominion. The sea beheld it and fled; * Jordan turned and went back. The mountains skipped like rams, * and the little hills like young sheep. 5
What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? * O Jordan, that you turned back? You mountains, that you skipped like rams? * you little hills like young sheep? Saviour shines upon you! Let this place resound with joy, echoing the mighty song of all God’s people! Priest The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give our thanks and praise. Priest It is truly right that with full hearts and minds and voices we should praise the unseen God, the all powerful Father, and his only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. For Christ has ransomed us with his blood, and paid for us the price of Adam’s sin to our eternal Father! This is our passover feast, when Christ, the true Lamb, is slain, whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers. This is the night when first you saved our forebears: you freed the people of Israel from their slavery and led them dry-shod through the sea. This is the night when Christians everywhere, washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement, are restored to grace and grow together in holiness. This is the night when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphant from the grave. Father, how wonderful your care for us! How boundless your merciful love! To ransom a slave you gave away your Son. The power of this holy night dispels all evil, washes guilt away, restores lost innocence, brings mourners joy. Night truly blessed when heaven is wedded to earth and we are reconciled with God! 7
Therefore, heavenly Father, in the joy of this night, receive our evening sacrifice of praise, your Church’s solemn offering. Accept this Easter candle. May it always dispel the darkness of this night! May the Morning Star which never sets find this flame still burning: Christ, that Morning Star, who came back from the dead, and shed his peaceful light on all creation, your Son who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. The Renewal of Baptismal Vows Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give our thanks and praise. Presider We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Creator, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we celebrate our fellowship in him in faith. We pray that all who have passed through the water of baptism may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Saviour. 8
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Dear friends, through the paschal mystery, we have been buried with Christ in baptism, so that we may rise with him to a new life. Now that our Lenten observance is ended, let us renew the promises we made in baptism, when we rejected Satan and all evil works, and promised to serve God faithfully in God’s holy catholic Church. Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? All I do. Priest Do you believe in God the Father? All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Priest Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? All I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Priest Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? All I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Priest Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? All I will, with God's help. 9
Priest Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? All I will, with God's help. Priest Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? All I will, with God's help. Priest Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? All I will, with God's help. Priest Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? All I will, with God's help. Priest Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God’s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth? All I will, with God’s help. Priest God the creator, the rock of our salvation, has given us new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, through our Lord Jesus Christ. May God keep us faithful to our calling, now and for ever. Amen. Musical solo Offertory Please place your envelope or financial gift on the offering plate on your way up to communion. All Amen. The Great Thanksgiving Priest The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give our thanks and praise. Priest Eternal God, Source of all being, we give you thanks and praise for your faithful love. You call us into friendship with you and one another to be your holy people, a sign of your presence in the world. When those we trust betray us, unfailingly you remain with us. When we injure others, you confront us in your love and call us to the paths of righteousness. You stand with the weak, and those, broken and alone, whom you have always welcomed home, making the first last, and the last first. 11
Therefore we raise our voices with angels and archangels, forever praising you and saying All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Priest Blessed are you, O Holy One: when Hagar was driven into the wilderness you followed her and gave her hope. When Joseph was sold into bondage, you turned malice to your people’s good. When you called Israel out of slavery, you brought them through the wilderness into the promised land. When your people were taken into exile you wept with them by the river of Babylon and carried them home. All Restore us, O God, let your face shine! Priest At the right time you sent your Anointed One to stand with the poor, the outcast, and the oppressed. Jesus touched lepers, and the sick, and healed them. He accepted water from a woman of Samaria and offered her the water of new life. Christ knew the desolation of the cross and opened the way for all humanity into the redemption of your reconciling love. 12
On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Loving and Holy One, recalling Christ’s death and resurrection, we offer you these gifts, longing for the bread of tomorrow and the wine of the age to come. Therefore we proclaim our hope. All Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. Priest Pour out your Spirit on these gifts that through them you may sustain us in our hunger for your peace. We hold before you all whose lives are marked by suffering, our sisters and brothers. When we are broken and cast aside, embrace us in your love. All Restore us, O God, let your face shine! 13
Priest Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O Source of all life, now and for ever. All Amen. All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.
