Dear readers, June 2013, No 29 Summer brings a big sense of accomplishment for the Green Marine team! As you’ll see from the infor- mation and images in this newsletter, GreenTech 2013 was a crowning success for the past 12 months. We hope your summer will be sunny from coast to coast. Happy reading! Welcome to our three new members! Green Marine is pleased to welcome a new participant Kinder Morgan Canada Inc. operates the Trans Mountain pipeline, which transports crude oil and petroleum products from Edmonton, Alberta, to Ca- nada’s West Coast and Washington State’s Puget Sound region. The pipe- line has been in continuous operation since 1953. Its destinations include the Westridge Marine Terminal at Burrard Inlet, where tankers are loaded with crude oil. Westridge Marine Terminal will benchmark its environmental performance using Green Marine’s framework. Westridge Marine Terminal Green Marine also welcomes two new supporters Northwest Community College (NWCC) is an accre- dited post-secondary institution that serves the vibrant and diverse communities of northwest British Columbia. Esta- blished in 1975 in Terrace, B.C., NWCC has expanded to nine regional campuses serving 34 communities. The col- lege provides students with innovative programs leading to sustainable careers. NWCC is in the process of formally establishing the School of Marine and Coastal Studies, which will be based at the Prince Rupert campus to serve the needs of coastal communities from Stewart in the north to Hartley Bay in the south and from Kitimat westward to Haida Gwaii. Established in 1990, Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) is the only grassroots citizens’ organization focused on the protection and restoration of the Strait of Georgia – one of Canada’s most at-risk environments. GSA is also working to promote the sustainability of the strait, as well as its tributaries and commu- nities. The organization is committed to a future for the region that has clean water and air for healthy salmon runs, abundant marine life, and sustainable development by the communities using the best available science, the pre- cautionary principle, experience, traditional ecological knowledge, as well as taking into account community values.
GreenTech 2013 : mission accomplished! With 32 dynamic speakers, diverse presentations, 23 exhibitors and more than 200 participants, Green Marine’s 6th annual conference was a definite success. GreenTech 2013 was held May 29th to 31st in Vancouver, British Columbia, and enabled North America’s marine industry to share information and ideas about prio- rity environmental issues and the concrete actions being undertaken. It was also an opportunity to address upcoming challenges by exchanging views on potential solutions. Green Marine wishes to thank all of the speakers, exhibitors, participants and spon- sors who helped the conference to surpass once again all hopes! The PDF files of the presentations are now available on our website. You can also browse photos from the event. Presentations More photos! GreenTech 2013 was also the occasion for Green Marine to share the performance results of all its par- ticipants for the year 2012. The progress report was released during a certification ceremony attended by Kinder Morgan Canada Inc.’s president, Ian Ander- son, as the guest speaker. The progress report which includes the individual results of all the certified members of the environmental program – ports, terminals, shipowners and shipyards – is now on line. Spotlight on our partners DNV and WWF to cooperate on plastic debris Det Norske Veritas and World Wildlife Fund have announced the development of a concept research vessel to clean up the plastic debris accumulating in the world’s oceans where plastic can take up to 500 years to disintegrate. Named Spindrift and having a length of 85 metres, it will be able to support 38 researchers for up to 90 days at sea. It’s estimated there will be some 230 million tonnes of plastic in the ocean by 2020, most of it from land sources, but also as a result of marine activities. Wärtsilä launches new engine Wärtsilä has introduced a more powerful version of its Wärtsilä 34DF engine. The up- graded version of the engine increases the efficiency in both liquid- and gas-opera- ting modes and offers a power increase up to 500kw per cylinder. When operating in gas mode, the Wärtsilä 34DF engine is already compliant with IMO Tier III regulations without any secondary exhaust gas purification systems. SOx and CO2 emissions are notably reduced and a smokeless operation is attained. In liquid fuel oil mode, the Wärt- silä dual-fuel engines are fully compliant with the IMO Tier II exhaust emissions regulations set out in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 convention. The engine is able to operate efficiently and economically on low sulphur fuels (
Improved shore access in Trois-Rivières The Trois-Rivières Port Authority inaugurated the Hector-Louis Lan- gevin Park in May. The park represents an investment of almost $575,000. The project is part of the port’s On Course for 2020 strate- gic plan and the city’s urban development plan. It has involved trans- forming a parking lot into a new green space, as well as a commitment by both entities to provide Trois-Rivières residents with unobstructed access to the banks of the St. Lawrence and Saint-Maurice rivers over a continuous shoreline of more than two kilometres. Oceanex launches Canada’s largest con/ro ship The largest Canadian-flagged container/roll-on roll-off ship was launched by Oceanex in Flensburg, Germany, on May 31st. The Oceanex Connaigra will set new standards for in- novation, flexibility, and environmental protection. Oceanex has placed the highest value on environmental performance for this new-build. Because of its optimal lines, the new ship will use 30% less fuel than vessels of comparable size, the- reby reducing C02 emissions by about 20,000 tonnes per year. With an innovative waste-gas de-sulphurisation sys- tem, the Oceanex Connaigra already meets stricter environ- mental regulations that are due to take effect in 2015. The Connaigra is expected to arrive for duty in Newfoundland in the fall of 2013. Know someone else who is interested in Green Marine? Please send us their email at manon.lanthier@green-marine.org. Full certification at Sept-Îles! All of the terminals at the Port of Sept-Îles are now Green Marine certified! Sept-Îles is still the only port to bring all of its terminals and partners under the Green Marine banner. Manon D’Auteuil, the port’s director, Engineering & Sustainable Development, celebrated the commitment and hard work of all of the port’s par- tners on June 12th. From left to right: Philippe B. The environmentally ad- vanced vessels will be built in Japan and will add substantial capacity to its Great Lakes fleet. Sharing the environmental characteristics of the previous six lakers ordered by Fednav, they will use 28% less fuel and produce 28% less emissions than vessels built 10 years ago that were then among the most efficient of their time. The new vessels will significantly contribute to Fednav’s goal to steadily reduce its fleet’s GHG emissions. The fuel-efficient engines will also reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by approxi- mately 33%. The six additional vessels will be delivered between May and November 2015. They will be among the 27 new ships (including 14 lakers) added to Fednav’s fleet since January 1, 2012. Ports set their sights on lowering emissions Seattle, Tacoma and Port Metro Vancouver have outlined goals for the further reduction of diesel emis- sions by 2020. The decision updates the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy. The ports intend to cut diesel emissions by 75% per tonne of cargo by 2015 and 80% by 2020. Along with projected cargo growth, this will result in overall reductions of 70% by 2015 and 75% by 2020.
