WELCOME
I am delighted to welcome you all to The Big Fat Quiz in aid of
Hospitality Action, the industry’s benevolent charity. We offer
a crucial lifeline to people of all ages, working and retired, from
the hospitality industry. Whether we are approached by a chef,
housekeeper, school cook or waiter, we will endeavour to provide
support, whatever the difficulty.
My sincerest thanks to everyone who has donated towards this
special event. I am particularly grateful to Bidfood, without whom
tonight would not have been possible, and our hosts Park Plaza
Westminster Bridge London, who will be looking after us all this
evening. Please do take a moment to turn overleaf and view all of
our magnificent supporters in full.
The difference Hospitality Action makes to people’s everyday lives
is real and direct. The gift of a basic item you and I take for granted
can rejuvenate those who would otherwise be forgotten about.
With this in mind I ask you to dig deep for the fundraising activities
this evening. They are a fun and easy way to raise crucial funds and
the money raised goes directly to helping those in serious need.

VIKKI’S STORY
Kind and caring Vikki has worked in hospitality
since she left college. Experienced in pub and
bar work Vikki took on the role as a waitress in a
busy restaurant where she has been for the past
21 years.
Sadly the last 12 months have been incredibly
tough for Vikki as she left work to care for her
mother who was dying of cancer. Heartbroken
when her mum passed away, Vikki found a
cancerous lump in her own breast, as did
her sister. Tragically both siblings underwent
mastectomies at the same time as attempting
to deal with their grief.
Unable to return to work and borrowing money
from her friends and family to keep up with her
bills Vikki contacted Hospitality Action for help.
We gave Vikki a crisis grant to help with her
general living costs as she faces more surgery
and the long road to recovery.
Vikki says: “Your help means I can afford my
bills and pay for my shopping of healthy food
and supplements. Thank you!”

When Jon turned to Hospitality Action for support we
couldn’t say no.
Jon says: “I’m writing to tell you all that I cannot express in
words the gratitude I have to you. I worked in hospitality
starting as a waiter at 12 years old, I put all my effort into my
career and worked my way up to front of house manager for
a five star country house hotel.
When I started a new role things did not go well and eventually,
I was left homeless. Since then I have had a very difficult time,
my relationship broke down and I’ve had bad problems with
stress and anxiety. My youngest daughter lives with me full
time and I have shared care of my eldest daughter, they have
been sharing a single bed for nearly two years with me.
My housing officer then suggested asking Hospitality Action
for help. You very kindly paid my bankruptcy order and helped
me to buy a bunk bed. You also gave us a day out to the zoo
with my disabled mother which was fantastic.
I’m currently feeling 100% better and I’m writing to say a
MASSIVE thank you, not only have you changed and improved
my situation, but you’ve restored something I haven’t had in
a very long time - HOPE.”
