WELCOME Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the Major General (MG) Harry Greene Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), I welcome you to tonight’s Gala. For 17 consecutive years, the Monmouth and Aberdeen Communities have staged this event in support of the Fisher House Foundation, which builds comfort homes where military & veteran families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital. Since its inception, the Foundation has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $525 million in out-of-pocket costs for lodging and transportation. We gather tonight in the grand tradition of the military taking care of its own. In a changing, dangerous world that can be difficult to understand, one thing remains certain: our military will always be there to defend our freedoms and our homeland at any cost. Their sacrifices can never be repaid, but we can in some small measure lessen their burden by giving magnanimously to this worthwhile cause that provides much needed support to our wounded service members, Veterans, and their families. What we are doing tonight is not just raising funds— it is a fitting gesture of gratitude to those wounded heroes and their families who have selflessly given so much and now need our help. We are incredibly grateful to this year’s corporate, military, and government sponsors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who stayed the course in 2020 and carried on our enviable record of fund-raising for the Foundation in a phenomenally successful virtual event. COVID may have kept us apart, but it did not keep us from joining together to raise $135,000! We are humbled by your sponsorship and tremendous response to our call for giving in 2021, and are excited to welcome so many new sponsors this year. With your help, we hope to exceed our goals in a come-back year when we weren’t sure of anything except everyone’s commitment to this wonderful, worthwhile cause! Of course, none of this would be possible without our wonderful volunteers. Theirs is not just a sacrifice of time—it is a passion for this cause. Their dedication, resourcefulness, and talents in bringing all of this about is, to use the current vernacular, epic. If you have the chance, please thank them for it, and if you know them at all, they never stand on their laurels. In fact, they have already begun work on next year’s gala, “Once Upon a Fairytale Ball. ” Thank you again for joining us tonight. We have a fun-filled night in store, so relax, empty your wallets and pocketbooks for Fisher House, and please enjoy this evening’s Return to Margaritaville! Bob Gutjahr, President, Major General Harry Greene, Aberdeen Chapter of AUSA 5
THE FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION A Fisher House is “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There are 84 Fisher Houses located on 25 military installations and 35 VA medical centers. Many more houses are under construction or in design. Typically, the houses are 5,000 to 16,800 square foot homes donated by the Fisher family and Fisher House Foundation. Each house is designed to provide up to 21 suites. All are professionally furnished and decorat- ed in the tone and style of the local region. The houses can accommodate 16 to 42 family members. They feature a common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room and an inviting living room with library and toys for children. Newest houses are 100% handicap accessible and include elevators. A Fisher House is a temporary residence and is not a treatment facility, hospice, or counseling center. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $525 million in out-of-pocket costs for lodging and transportation. Over 413,000 families have stayed at a Fisher House since its inception in 1990, and that number continues to 6
THE FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION continued grow each year as Fisher House Foundation builds new houses at VA and military medical centers with the greatest need. Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members. Thanks to your generosity, we have provided more than 80,000 tickets to wounded, injured, and ill service members and their families, worth over $105 million. The Hotels for Heroes program uses donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses, and children of fallen and disabled veterans with over $27 million awarded to date. THE FISHER HOUSE IMPACT Tarah McLaughlin In January of 2020, Tarah McLaughlin’s husband, Staff Sgt. Ian P. McLaughlin, was killed when his vehicle struck an IED in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Ian was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, so his wife and three children lived at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Tarah immediately left for Dover Air Force Base for the dignified transfer of remains. Tarah recently contacted Fisher House Foundation to share her experience while staying at the Dover Fisher House for Families of the Fallen. Below is a part of her letter. “As you can imagine, traveling with 3 children for the first time and the anxiety and the grief of losing my husband took a toll on my mental state. We traveled from Fort Bragg to Dover, an all-around trip that took about 9 hours to complete. Needless to say, we were exhausted when we arrived at the Fisher House at Dover. My children were cranky, off their schedule, and confused on what was going on, but the Fisher House felt like a safe place for us. I not only forgot to pack a toothbrush and really anything for myself, but I forgot basic things for my chil- dren. When I walked into our room there was toys ready for my children, a Pack ‘n Play filled with blankets for my infant and an array of baby bathtubs, soaps, towels, potty seats and so much more. If I’m being 100% honest in that moment, I bawled my eyes out because of how embarrassed I was for forgetting these basic things and how bad of a mom I felt at that moment. Within seconds of settling into our room, it was the first time since losing my husband that I felt safe and secure. The accommodations and the people at the Fisher House made me feel at home in probably one of the darkest times of my life.” 8

THE FISHER HOUSE IMPACT Veteran Joseph Krebs Krebs, who lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand, travels to the District’s VA hospital for treatment for a blood disorder that lasts anywhere from 5-6 months. With him is his caretaker, Dr. Kriangsak Pukawan, who has been with Krebs for 20 years. “I come all the way to the VA here because I know all my doctors. It’s just superb care, that’s why I come. But I don’t know what I would do without a Fisher House. I either wouldn’t be able to come, or we would have to stay in an expensive hotel for six months, I guess. Fact is, this old Korean vet just doesn’t have that kind of money,” said Krebs. Krebs, 82, was the youngest staff sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He later joined the Army Reserve and retired as a colonel. His two daughters, Mary Devine and Julia Krebs are also military veterans. His son William is an IT specialist. A simple note to all those who have served… THANK YOU. PRAXISENG.COM CUSTOMER DRIVEN :: MISSION FOCUSED 10

THE FISHER HOUSE IMPACT The Wooten Family When Brayden and Deklin were born they weighed 2 ½ pounds – combined. In fact, the doctors weighed them in grams on day two: Brayden at just 400 grams and Deklin only a little bit heavier. “It’s hard to believe,” said Army SSgt. Frank Wooten, the boys’ father, “but Brayden’s legs were smaller than my little finger. Their eyes were not even open yet.” To illustrate just how tiny they were, Army Capt. Canndice Wooten, the boys’ mother, brought out a diaper like the ones they used in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It wasn’t much bigger than a book of matches– it wouldn’t have fit a doll. Even then it was too big for Brayden. The twins were born January 26, 2011, and for the next 4 ½ months, Frank and Canndice lived a daily, and sometimes hourly, emotional roller coaster, never knowing if their boys would survive and then – if they did – would they ever be able to play baseball, read a book or dance? “The doctors warned us from the beginning that we might have to say goodbye, at least to Brayden,” said Canndice. “What helped more than anything was being able to stay at the Fisher House. Having other people to talk to. We were all struggling. One person had cancer, one had hepatitis, and another had a baby in NICU like us. It didn’t matter, we were there for each other. I can’t tell you what that means – to know you are not alone.” The Army had given both Canndice and Frank compassionate reassignments to Ft. Hood, the closest Army Base to Lackland Air Force Base, where the boys were hospitalized. The Fisher House was their home and their refuge, allowing them to be just steps from their babies. 12

SCHOLARSHIP CASH CALL Fisher House Foundation, Inc., an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) charity, administers the Scholarships for Military Children program. Commissary business partners and others donate to Fisher House Foundation, Inc., which treats each contribution as a “restricted donation.” Fisher House Foundation, in turn, contracts with “Scholarship Managers,” a professional scholarship management firm, to evaluate the applications and select the best qualified as recipients. Every dollar received is given out as a scholarship grant. Additionally, Fisher House Foundation matches all donations, dollar for dollar, and does not charge for its services, to include the costs of administration and the cost of the scholar- ship management contract. For school year 2022-23, there will be 500 recipients selected, and each will receive a $2,000 scholarship grant. What this means is that a $10,000 donation, for example, will sponsor ten scholarship recipients, each receiving a $2,000 scholarship grant. You can contribute to the fund tonight during our cash call or donate direct on our website at apgfisherhousegala.com/scholarship-cash-call. 2021 APG Winner: Bella J Dietz (Sponsored by Maj. Gen. FALLEN HEROES TABLE This small table … … honors the many members of our armed forces – our heroes -- who answered the call of duty but were unable to return home. It is deliberately placed before our nation’s colors as a special place of honor. … symbolizes the presence of their loving spirit; they will never be forgotten. … is set and reserved for one to honor each of our missing and fallen loved ones. … is round to represent the everlasting concern for those missing and fallen comrades. The white tablecloth… symbolizes the purity of our heroes’ intention to respond to their country’s call to arms. The single red rose… reminds us of the life and love of each hero and the sacrifices that they made for this country. The yellow ribbon... tied so prominently on the vase, symbolizes remembrance for the families and loved ones who keep the memories of our brothers and sisters alive. The solitary candle… stands proud, straight, and tall … just like our comrades and symbolizes the ultimate sacrifice that our fallen comrades and their families have made to preserve our precious freedom. 20
FALLEN HEROES TABLE continued The slice of lemon on the plate… reminds us of their bitter fate. The salt upon the table… symbolizes the tears shed by families as they have endured the sorrow of their loved ones’ fate. The inverted glass… symbolizes that our heroes are with us in spirit but cannot raise a glass to toast with us tonight. The chair… leans forward against the table and represents a reserved space for each of our heroes. Please take a moment this evening to remember these brave men and women who have made “the ultimate sacrifice.” We also ask that you keep their families and loved ones in mind tonight as we continue our cause to support the Fisher House Foundation’s mission to provide a “home away from home” for military families so that they can be near their loved ones during hospitalizations for illness, disease, or injury. Thank you for your support! Sincerely, The Board Members of AUSA Major General Harry Greene, Aberdeen Chapter The Committee for the 2021 Fisher House Gala 21
