New Beginnings Saturday, January 22, 2022 Jamal Aliyev, Cello PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 1, “Classical” HAYDN Cello Concerto No. 1 TCHAIKOVSKY Variations on a Rococo Theme STRAVINSKY Firebird Suite The works on this concert represent tradition, revival, and rebirth. Laying the foundation is Haydn’s Cello Concerto (1765), regarded as one of the greatest works for cello of the Classical Era. Building on this are Tchaikovsky’s beloved Rococo Variations (1877), inspired by the composer’s admiration for the great Classicist Mozart, and Prokofiev’s reinvention of the Classical style in his famous First Symphony (1917). Rounding out the evening is music by Prokofiev’s contemporary Stravinsky, whose Firebird (1910) symbolizes beauty, magic, and rebirth.

SEASON FINALE Russian Titans Saturday, April 30th, 2022 Blake Pouliot, Violin GLINKA Overture from Ruslan and Ludmilla KHACHATURIAN Violin Concerto SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 5 The 2021-22 season will conclude with three great pieces of music, all quintessentially Russian. Grandfather Glinka paved the way for composers Khachaturian and Shostakovich, all capturing a uniquely Russian sound that accounts for these works’ timelessness. Shostakovich’s powerful 5th Symphony was originally programmed on the TSO’s March 2020 concert, when rehearsals abruptly stopped and the concert was cancelled due to COVID. This revival will surely be cathartic for the orchestra and audience, bringing the season to a triumphant close.
