Wawne Primary School News April 2021 Welcome to the April edition of the school newsletter. It has been lovely to have all the children back in school for these final three weeks of the Spring term. They have settled back in well and they have been making the most of the opportunities made available to them. Everyone is shattered, staff and children alike so hopefully everyone will get a good rest over the Easter break and we will be treated to a bit of sunshine to make us smile! As you will see from the diary below the Summer term is full of exciting events and many opportunities so we are looking forward to (fingers crossed) a full term in school and having lots of fun. It is expected that as we return from the Easter break, we will still have a number of the restrictions and changes in place, possibly until the end of this academic year, to continue to reduce the risk of Covid-19. Therefore, our pupils will continue to spend their day in two bubbles (EYFS/KS1 and KS2). The bubbles will have separate assemblies, playtimes and lunchtimes. The extra-curricular clubs are also being split for the two bubbles. Unfortunately, we will not be able to open our doors yet to parents, carers and families; however, we will keep you updated as we head through the summer term. In the meantime, we will continue to post pictures, videos and updates on Dojo, Twitter and the school website. Please be assured that we will continue to do everything we can to keep the children and staff as safe as possible in school. We politely ask that you support us with this outside of school by not mixing unless in bubbles. With us being such a small school there is still the risk that any cases in school may result in a whole school closure for 10 days. Children can still come to school with a cold and when generally feeling under the weather; a dose of Calpol and the distraction of friends and schoolwork can work wonders and mean learning is not being missed. However, if your child displays any of the following symptoms of Covid-19 then please inform us immediately and keep them at home to isolate: High temperature New, continuous cough Loss of the sense of taste or smell Your child will need to be tested and should not return to school until a negative result has been obtained. The school will require a copy of this negative result once received please. Please also note that if someone in your household is being tested then you must not send your children to school until a negative result has been received. Any child who is absent from school due to isolation will receive their school work through our Dojo system or where required and where possible, a paper copy will be delivered. To ensure we continue to reduce the gaps in learning it is expected that all work is completed and uploaded to Dojo or returned to school.
Mrs Marshall’s fitness Challenge On Monday 19th April all the children from F1 through to Year 6 will begin Mrs Marshall’s ‘Couch to Race for Life’ training programme. This will be a 10 week training programme where the children will walk/run laps of the playground building up the time each week and recording the number of laps they do. The grand finale will be that the children take part in the Children’s Race for Life on our school field. The training programme and event have been designed so that all children can take part at their own pace developing their individual fitness. All children will receive a medal at the end of the race. We will also be racing to raise money for Cancer Research so if you are able to spare a little, please visit our school Just Giving page and sponsor your child. All donations will be much appreciated. If you would like to leave a message on the Just Giving page please do, as the children will be regularly checking the fund raising progress. Thank you in advance for your support. https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/wawne-primary-school-1 Statutory assessment update Staffing update At the end of this academic year, we will be saying a fond farewell to Mrs Rahman who will be leaving us, There have been many updates over recent months just for a short while, as she is expecting a baby. School charity 2020-21 In the Autumn term our School Captains made a presentation to the school about three different local charities, one of which would be the focus for the school over the academic year. The children all voted and the chosen charity was Dove House Hospice. Unfortunately, the further partial lockdown of the school for the Spring term put hinder to the plans that had been made; however, we would like to relaunch the children’s work for the Summer term and remainder of the academic year. After Easter, the School Captain’s and the School Council will relaunch their plans and will update everyone. In the meantime, just as a reminder that we do have a collection box in the school library which is for any small change the children wish to bring into school and donate to Dove House Hospice throughout the year.
Down’s Syndrome Awareness day As you may be aware, we have a new member of our school community who joined our F2 class in January 2021. Jake is an amazing young man with a little extra something special, he has settled well into our school and has been welcomed by all of our children. Jake has Down’s Syndrome and he and his family will be helping us to raise awareness and develop the understanding of our school community. On 21st March 2021, it was World Down’s Syndrome Day, a worldwide celebration of the many children and adults who have that extra something special. At Wawne Primary School we will be holding our own Down’s Syndrome Awareness Day on Tuesday 27th April 2021. On this day the children will be invited to come to school in odd socks and to wear blue and yellow. We will be developing our understanding and awareness whilst having fun and spreading some kindness. The children will have the chance to also make a voluntary contribution to our collection that will be donated to a local charity, DownRight Special. https://www.downrightspecial.co.uk/ Dates for your diary Monday 12th April- Staff training day Tuesday 13th April – Children return to school for the start of the summer term Monday 19th April – Training for the Children’s Race for Life begins Tuesday 27th April- Down Syndrome Awareness Day Monday 3rd May – May bank Holiday- school closed Friday 7th May – NSPCC Number Day Friday 14th May – Pyjamarama Day Thursday 20th May- Team Colour day and special lunch Friday 28th May – School closes for the half term break Monday 7th June – School opens to pupils Week beg: Monday 7th June – Wawne’s Got Talent auditions Monday 14th June – Pupil reports go out to parents Week beg: Monday 21st June- Writing week and Time Capsule Education Visit Monday 28th June – Wawne’s Got Talent final Wednesday 30th June parents evening Thursday 1st July parents evening Friday 2nd July – Children’s Race for Life Wednesday 14th July – Den Building Day Thursday 15th July – Sports Day (Weather permitting.
