Key Question Week 10: Can you draw the future? Key Text for Linked Learning: Harold and the Purple Crayon Linked Learning: English, Art, Computing This week the children will be exploring the key text, ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon ‘. Inspired by the book and its wonderful illustrations, children will select a colour that represents them and will illustrate their own short story. They will design and draw a cartoon character and will use their imagination to write creatively taking themselves on their very own adventure; just like Harold. In their writing, children will be showing us all the features of Year 1 writing; capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks, question marks and expanded noun phrases. Children will make a first draft then share their work with their peers and teachers; ready to create their final piece next week. In Art, children will have to really concentrate on their pencil control and form careful lines and shapes to convey their story. They will also create drafts and improved versions of their illustrations to accompany their story. Furthermore, children will also begin to look at the colour wheel and start to think about which colours influence them and how colour can represent their mood. In Computing, children will create and print their own front cover for their story including title, text and images. Maths: Following on from last week, children will be adding single digit numbers to 2-digit numbers using number facts (doubles and bonds to 10 in 1s digits). For example, 23 + 3 = - we can use our doubles to help us by covering 20 of 23 and then adding 3 + 3 =6 so 23 + 3 = 26. Children will then be adding single digit numbers to 2-digit numbers using number facts (addition fact patterns in 1s digits using tens and ones – eg 3 + 5, 13 + 5 and 23 + 5). Towards the end of the week, children will revisit telling the time; o’clock and half past on an analogy clock. Science: Children will be revisiting key scientific vocabulary they have learnt this year including carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. They will be creating their own visual definitions and matching vocabulary to the corresponding definitions. History: Children will articulate the impact the Wright brothers had on history and the changes to aeroplanes in chronological order. Geography: Children will create their own map of the Black Rock including a key to using geographical vocabulary such as ocean, rock, and hills. Computing: See above Music: Reflect, Rewind, Replay Children will be listening and appraising the song, ‘Grand March’ from Aida by Guiseppe Verdi (from the Romantic period) and will rewind and identify the instruments they hear in the song, ‘Oye Como Va’ by Santana. They will be talking about songs in great detail using their knowledge of musical vocabulary. Children will then revisit previous songs they have learnt this year and perform them as a class. Art / Design Technology: See above PDW / R.E: Children will continue to discuss what bullying looks like and will know what to do if they feel like themselves or someone else is being bullied. P.E. Children will take part in team games involving throwing and catching with defending and attacking teams. Vocabulary: The children will be learning the following words from the story Harold and the Purple Crayon and other subjects Ought Aboard Ashore Simple Deserving Wits Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores
