4 NEWS Leslie Carter We would like to thank everyone who attended Les’ funeral, and for all the lovely cards and support we received in the sad passing of Les. Many thanks Phyl, Gary & Andrew Carter Derek Rolfe Pearl and family would like to thank everyone for cards and donations on behalf of Derek, who passed away on 23rd February. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. Planet, People, Profit The perfect order I heard a Robin singing, one morning in early Spring. A joyful song that foretold, the new life it would bring. Then as the dawn was breaking, my heart felt broken too. I heard the sound which herald, the dreaded Demolition Crew. They used their heavy machinery, cut down trees, hedgerows after that. Devastating the natural scenery, taking away all wildlife habitat. The human population grows a pace, we need homes for our fellow man. Yet nature also needs the space, it has since time first began. A nature lover
NEWS 5 Obituary During the past few weeks we have lost senior members of long- established village families. They will be sadly missed. We convey our sincere condolences to their loved ones, and record below a few of my memories. Les Carter, a village stalwart, a friend to all and an exemplary family man. Never a bad word for anyone. Derek Rolfe, a Waddesdon man through and through, a strong family man. Known by many for his fine workmanship in the building trade. Margaret Evans, well known, admired and loved by her relations, neighbours and work-mates. Cheerful in adversity. Always helpful and friendly. Fred Cripps, Born and bred in Waddesdon, a member of long-standing village families, amongst his achievements as a young man he was our champion walking racer, later he became well known for his flower growing and exhibiting. A hard working, friendly man. An adopted Waddesdon Man Uri Sella, a “Cedars Boy” Another loss is recorded in the death of perhaps the last of “The Cedars Boys”, Uri Sella. Uri was amongst the youngest of the thirty German Jewish boys who were saved from almost certain death, when they were brought to The Cedars by Mr and Mrs de Rothschild, in 1939. Despite losing his relatives in The Holocaust, Uri made a success of his life, settled in Israel, helped found a kibbutz, and served with the Israel Foreign Office.Whenever possible he returned to Waddesdon, which he considered to be his second home. He remembered with gratitude the sympathetic response of the village and valued the friendships that were forged in those difficult times. Norman Carr 19th March 2018

Bygone Days 7 Children's Playtime Most of us are materially better off than we would have been in any other period of Britain's history. We have more of just about everything that can be regarded as good, and there is a great deal less illness, poverty and hardship. But are we happier? Nowhere is this question more pertinent than in the case of the games played by children. There is no doubt that most of the time children are happy with the fashionable roller skates, skateboards, bicycles, electronic games and other gadgets that make their parents catch their breath - especially when the price is mentioned. However it is a sobering discovery to find that a toddler still gets at least as much pleasure from a few tins and a cardboard box, as from the most expensive toy, whilst some older children will play football for hours on end with a cheap ball and makeshift goals and pitch. Way back in the early years of the twentieth century children were very much left to improvise and 'make do' for their amusement. Most parents were too poor to provide a market for expensive toys, and what with long working hours and large gardens to cultivate, they certainly didn't have much time to spend in play with their children.Yet when one talked to people of that era they described a village playground that is beyond the imagination of most of us. Waddesdon had no children's playing field at the end of the First World War as the cricket field was reserved for that game only, but thanks to the benevolence of farmer Arthur Goss, the field known as “The Green” (Police Station and Fire Station site) was used for field games, and of course the almost empty streets provided many acres of playground for other activities. Rounder's was played on The Green until the bases became deep depressions in the ground during the summer school holidays. Cricket was played across the High Street, the pitch lying between Sharps the Wheelwrights and Crooks the Builders, and the game only occasionally interrupted by a horse drawn vehicle. Spinning tops purchased for little more than a penny and sometimes less, and whips fashioned from sticks and string, would keep their owners happy for many an hour - even when on errands for parents. The occasional broken window from a flying top or stone was probably the only 'vandalism' suffered as a result. Iron hoops propelled by sticks or metal rods which were sometimes shaped to give increased control were extremely popular, especially with the boys. They would run around the village streets and even race around 'Rag Hall' on occasions. (Down Quainton Road past the Osier Beds to the crossroads, turn left alongside the Wotton Tramway to Hall Farm and Waddesdon Road Station, turn left and back to Waddesdon up the Bicester Road). Other games such as 'statues', 'hide and seek', football with make-shift balls and goals, and 'marbles' kept most children occupied most of the time, I have described only a small sample of the games played by children of a century ago. These games provided many, many hours of pleasure for youngsters who enjoyed a seemingly idyllic life in this rural haven. We are indebted to Alison Welsh for typing this from the original hand written article of 24th August 1979. Norman Carr 27th February 2018

The Bernwode Bus – Drivers Wanted !!! As the Bernwode Bus approaches its first anniversary we have had great success supporting local groups across the area. We help elderly social groups, sports teams and other community groups to have access to transport in order to prevent social isolation in our community. In order for the service to expand we need some more volunteer drivers who can help us to keep the bus running to more areas and more days of the week. We need drivers who can drive as little or as much as you like... Why not come and have a no obligation test drive to see if you like it and can help support this great cause. Please call Ashley on 07977 401548 for more details

36 NEWS With thanks to Hilary Lambourne, for auditing the accounts.
38 FROM THE MINISTER Dear Friends, Easter has happened and we are hurtling towards Pentecost and it seems to me that the seasons of the church come in rapid succession and hardly give us time to think. We often say to ourselves - “there's always tomorrow” but I came across this amusing story: An older lady was in the hospital reading her Bible when her doctor came in for his visit. She asked him how she was doing. He told her to read, Hebrews 13:8, which says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever," meaning she was about the same. However, she reversed the numbers and read Hebrews 8:13, "Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away,"!!! Which is it for you? Whilst the writer of Hebrews was writing about the "old covenant," the words could just as accurately describe each and every one of us. Like it or not, we are all growing old and eventually we will vanish away from this world. God's Word describes our life on this earth as a "flower of the field" that passes away (James 1:10) and "a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:14). We don't like to think of life in that way.We live in an age that likes to think it makes things that last.We have our plastic and non-breakable jars and cups.We buy a car battery and are given a guarantee that it will last as long as we own our car. So, we would like a guarantee that our bodies could last forever, and somebody - usually trying to sell us something - may try to tell us they can. However, that's just not the case. Admitting that we are "vanishing away" can be a frightening thought. It can also be comforting. If we allow ourselves to be wrapped up in material things, death means losing everything we consider to be of value. But, if we lay up treasures in heaven, it is an opportunity to shed troubles of this world and enjoy an eternity in the presence of our heavenly Father. Which is it for you? For our present troubles are small and won't last very long.Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. (2 Corinthians 4:17-18 NLT). Grace and Peace to you. Keith Edwards
