A LAKE WITHIN A DESERT WAT ER No other place in Canada can make that claim be- cause our part of the Okanagan is the nation’s only living desert. Much of our focus and attention is on Osoyoos Lake and its myriad of water activities. And for good reason! With an average high summer temperature of 31°C/87°F and long stretches of sandy beach, it’s an ideal playground for swimming, water ski- ing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, jet skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking. Many of the resorts, mo- tels, RV parks, campgrounds, and bed and break- fasts are located directly shoreline, offering a wide selection of accommodation with water views to fit any budget. Our water season on the lake begins in early April and lasts through October and even longer, de- pending on the individual sport or activity. The best part of being here for water sports is that our ex- pansive waterfront provides very easy access. You want beaches? We have plenty for sun wor- shipers, activity seekers, walkers or loungers who just want to relax and let the warmth of the sun and surf melt away their cares. The two most popular are Gyro Beach located in the heart of town in front of Watermark Beach Resort, while the other is Cot- tonwood Beach on the east side of town. Both of these beaches are great for anyone who likes warm, clear waters and hot days when the temperature reaches upwards of 35˚C (95˚F). For an out-of-the- way beach, try Legion Beach, tucked into a cove on the southwest side of the bridge. Want to sail or learn how to? The Lake Osoyoos Sailing Club offers memberships. Our boat launch- ing sites are at Sẁiẁs Provincial Park (Haynes Point), Osoyoos Lake Regional Park at the end of Lake- shore Drive, Nk’Mip Road at Nk’Mip Campground and Desert Sunrise Marina in downtown Osoyoos. They all provide easy access for boaters to get on the lake. We’re also the home to several water sport rental businesses for the adventurer in you. All of them offer new equipment and information for anyone new to water activities. For those looking for variety on the water, there’s a wide selection of pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes, wakeboarding and paddle- boards, among other water activity equipment. Ask about Stand Up Paddling lessons and wakeboard or wake surf lessons as well. Sailing Race on Osoyoos Lake, Photograph by Richard McGuire destinationosoyoos.com 20

Osoyoos Visitors Guide 2018 Walk on the Wild Side The South Okanagan’s desert environment is an extraordi- nary place, offering the visitor equal parts serenity and sur- prise. It is an ever-changing landscape – no matter when you visit, there is always something wonderful to see. Check out the list of some local wildlife: Nuttail’s Cottontail, Spadefoot, Preying Mantis, Western Bluebird, Tiger Salamander, Black Widow Spider, A Nuttall’s cottontail. It teems with wildlife and many rare species that can only be found in its wetlands and oxbows. This is the pocket desert, an endangered and important Canadian ecosystem that defines Osoyoos and its surrounding area. The entire valley serves as a crucial ‘corridor’ for migrating birds, animals and insects travelling between northern Canada and southern and central USA. Even plant life has used this corridor over time to spread grasslands from the south to the central interior of B.C. Some of the migrant species and many of the resident species are on the endangered species list. There are several unique ecosystems that are linked to each other: the water courses and wetlands and the lush vegetation that surrounds them; the sagebrush, bunch grasses and antelope-brush habitat of the dry benchlands; the ponderosa pine/ A couple of great horned owls blue bunch wheat grass and rocky slope watch from a safe tree branch.
