Kinoah Mitchell (age 15) Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) 2020 Youth Honoree Kinoah is a very active and happy 15-year-old boy. It is hard to believe that as a toddler, he was struggling to get out of bed in the morning or walk without falling down. When Kinoah was about 18 months old, his parents started noticing he was walking with a limp and losing his balance frequently. By Kinoah’s second birthday, they still didn’t have an explanation. Doctors referred them to numerous local physicians for procedures, including ultrasounds, x-rays, blood testing and bone scans of his spine, hips, and legs--none of which lead to any viable diagnosis. One morning in September of 2006, Kinoah refused to walk any more. He was once again carried back to the doctor and his parents begged for a referral to Children’s Hospital. Rheumatologists were certain that Kinoah was suffering from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). It was devastating to have this diagnosis, yet such a relief to finally have answers and treatment options. Since that time, Kinoah has undergone invasive joint injections, rigorous physical therapy, leg orthotics and a daily medication and stretching regimen to control the inflammation attacking his young 8
joints. He has suffered with joint pain and inflammation in both knees, ankles, elbows, wrists and his jaw. When his joints are inflamed, Kinoah has limited movement and pain. His parents describe this process as, “a helplessly heart-breaking process to watch.” Fortunately, as of today, the pain that comes with Kinoah’s disease is manageable. Kinoah is passionate about sports and nature. He stays busy with soccer, golf, fishing, playing guitar and his pet snake. He even earned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do at age 12! He is kind, compassionate, and helpful to his friends. He’s an amazing role model to his younger sister and brother, and every teacher’s dream to have in class. Kinoah’s parents add, “we are constantly impressed by Kinoah’s courage and perseverance.” Champion of Yes. Arthritis is a thief. People with arthritis know this full well. It steals everyday joys and long-term dreams. It isolates and ostracizes. It is painful. It induces a spirit of “No.” As people close to the Arthritis Foundation, we know that it doesn’t have to be this way. We are in a unique place of authority and action, with the purpose of finding a cure, but also fighting for the everyday victories. 9
Research : Continuing Our Mission Research provides our best hope for a future free of arthritis. Since 1948, the Arthritis Foundation has funded more than $500 million in research grants to guide and accelerate progress toward the prevention, control and cure of arthritis. Your financial contributions have made it possible for us to increase our commitment to arthritis research, advocacy and building the Live Yes! Arthritis Network. This evening your continued commitment will bring us one step closer to a cure. To address the critical shortage of specialists to treat patients and perform groundbreaking research, the Arthritis Foundation funds both pediatric and adult rheumatology fellowships. We are currently funding 16 fellowships across the country, 11 in pediatric rheumatology and 5 in adult rheumatology Here in Washington, we are funding a 2-year fellowship in the rheumatology department at the University of Washington and a second, 3-year fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital in the pediatric rheumatology department. Thank you! Nearly 54 million Americans, 1 in 4 adults, report having doctor diagnosed arthritis. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65. 10

Facts and Figures about Juvenile Arthritis: • More common than cystic fibrosis, diabetes, muscular dystrophy and many other better known childhood conditions • Affects more than 300,000 children in the United States and 6,100 in Washington state • Leading cause of acquired disability and a common cause of blindness in children • Children benefit most from early diagnosis and treatment which includes family education and support 23
Advocacy in Action 2020 Arthritis Foundation Washington Advocacy Washington Advocacy Day – February 6th The Arthritis Foundation hosted an Advocacy Day at the Capitol where almost 2 dozen Advocates met with their legislators and legislative staff. The legislative asks included a piece of legislation, HB 2852, to help increase the number of pediatric rheumatologists in Washington! This important bill did not pass in 2020 but we are working hard to re- introduce it in 2021, because kids with arthritis deserve access to the care they need. For more information on how you can make a difference through advocacy, please visit www.arthritis.org/advocate. COVID-19 The Arthritis Foundation has been in consistent communication with stakeholders and elected officials, such as the COVID-19 taskforce, Congress, Governors, state Board of Pharmacies, Insurance Commissioners, etc., on behalf of arthritis patients. We have frequently made recommendations to decisively slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, particularly for the people with pre-existing conditions who are at increased risk of infection and adverse health outcomes from COVID-19. In addition, the Arthritis Foundation has been very active in regard to Hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine and have urged the federal government to work with the broader health care community to help ensure continued availability of these drugs for the patients who are maintained on them. The Arthritis Foundation also weighed in on legislation that has been introduced to help non-profits during this difficult time. To stay up to date on what we are doing on COVID-19 and find resources, please visit https://www.arthritis.org/care-connect. 24
