WELCOME

Set against the magnificent backdrop of Hever Castle, Hever Festival Theatre is a Summer
celebration of all things British, from cream teas, a Time Machine and a trip to the seaside, to
Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance Marches. The richly varied programme begins in May and extends
throughout the Summer months until the August bank holiday. The theatre is set in the Two Sisters’
Lawn Garden where you can enjoy a pre-show picnic under one of the beautiful trees edging the
Two Sisters’ Pool or choose a different spot to admire the breath-taking views over the Hever lake
before making your way to our magnificent covered theatre for a night of fabulous entertainment.

The Festival began thirty four years ago as the Kent Repertory Theatre Company whilst the Festival
has grown, its roots have not been forgotten. From plays to musical theatre, orchestral concerts
to shows for families, we continue to offer a vibrant and exciting programme. Whether you are a
lover of musicals, you believe a snail can save a whale or that Henry VIII was the first Brexiteer,
there is an event to suit every taste.

We are very proud to be celebrating our thirty fifth year at Hever Castle, we’ve come a long way
since 1983 and we are excited about where we are going in the future.

We very much look forward to sharing this year’s great line up of events and welcoming friends
old and new to our magical open-air theatre this summer

Off the Kerb Presents Mark Steel This time last year, it seemed highly unlikely the UK would vote to

Gonna Be Alright Government; Donald Trump was a buffoon who surely wasn’t going

                Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw
We are delighted Bromley Little Theatre returns this summer with
Bernard Shaw’s famous and much-loved story of how Henry
Higgins, an eminent phonetics expert, transforms the
downtrodden, cockney, Edwardian flower seller, Eliza Doolittle,
into a poised and plausible lady. However, bashing Eliza‘s vowels
into shape is only part of the task. This story of an unconventional
romance went on to be adapted for the big screen as the hugely
successful musical, My Fair Lady but in Pygmalion Shaw has
created one of the great comic masterpieces of theatre, skilfully
examining class and women’s independence in a play that
sparkles with wit and charm.

AN AUDIENCE WITH
David Starkey Henry VIII: The First Brexiteer?
For our first ever Festival talk we are delighted to welcome David
Starkey to the theatre. Passionate about Hever Castle he is to curate
an art exhibition at the Castle this autumn. Henry VIII, like a colossus,
bestrides the history of our country. He invented the idea of British
uniqueness; in fact, the Reformation could be defined as the first
Brexit, when his ministers devised the doctrine of parliamentary
sovereignty. In this talk David Starkey draws on his unique knowledge
of Henry’s reign to examine his tumultuous personal life, which pitted
religion against politics as brutally as in our own age of Isis, through
to the Grand Tourists who bought European culture with British
money, all offering so very many parallels with the Brexit situation we
           find ourselves in today.
